NEPAL, KATHMANDU: HOW TO MAKE PASHMINA SCARVES
by Marco Petruzzelli
tvreporter.it
Pashmina refers to a type of fine cashmere wool and the textiles made from it. The name comes from Pashmineh, made from Persian pashm (wool). The wool comes from changthangi or pashmina goat, which is a special breed of goat indigenous to high altitudes of the Himalayas in Nepal, Pakistan and northern India. Pashmina shawls are hand spun, woven and embroidered in Kashmir, and made from fine cashmere fibre.
The fibre is also known as pashm or pashmina for its use in the handmade shawls of Himalayas. The woollen shawls made from wool in Kashmir find written mention in Afghan texts between 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD. However, the founder of the cashmere wool industry is traditionally held to be the 15th century ruler of Kashmir, Zayn-ul-Abidin, who introduced weavers from Central Asia.
Cashmere shawls have been manufactured in Nepal and Kashmir for thousands of years. The test for a quality pashmina is warmth and feel. Pashmina and Cashmere are derived from mountain goats. One distinct difference between Pashmina and Cashmere is the fiber diameter. Pashmina fibers are finer and thinner than cashmere fiber, therefore, it is ideal for making light weight apparel like fine scarves. However, these days the word PASHMINA has been used too liberally and any scarves made from natural or synthetic fiber are sold as Pashmina creating confusion in the market.
Pashmina from Nepal are the best in quality because of the conditions to which the mountain goats have adapted over centuries. The high Himalayas of Nepal has harsh, cold climate and in order to survive that the mountain goats have developed exceptionally warm and light fiber which might be slightly coarser than cashmere fibers obtained from lower region goats, but it is much warmer.
To distinguish Nepalese Pashmina, the Nepal Pashmina Industries Association has registered a Trademark around the world, called Changra Pashmina.
BBC Documentary - Living in Nepal #Nomad
BBC Documentary - Living in Nepal
In this first episode, Kate travels to south west Nepal in search of the country's last community of nomads, the Raute people. Almost all of the Raute population has already settled in Nepal and India - just one group of 140 people remain living as nomads. These hunter-gatherers still move camp every few weeks through the steeply wooded hills and mountains in one of the poorest countries on the planet. Life for this last Raute group is increasingly tough, as they face pressure to settle from Nepal's government and hostility from the farmers on whose land they camp.
The Raute are famously private, and it proves a difficult task for Kate to get to know them. At the beginning they are wary, only engaging with her to ask for money. With perseverance and a rather unlikely rendition of Old MacDonald, Kate is slowly accepted into this tightly knit and proud community. But it's a demanding and emotional journey as she witnesses them move ever further from their ancient traditions and encounters first hand the hostility that the Raute face from mainstream Nepali society. As she helps them move camp twice, bearing heavy loads up punishingly steep hills, she comes face to face - and almost fist to fist - with the conflicts and contradictions facing Nepal's last nomads.
DROPS Nepal Video Presentation
DROPS Nepal is a lovely, chunky and luxurious yarn spun in 35% alpaca and 65% wool. The fibers are untreated, which means that they are only washed and not exposed to any chemical treatment prior to the dyeing. This highlights the fibers' natural properties, providing also a better shape and texture qualities.
The mix accentuates the softness of alpaca and the wool contributes to the garments' shape stability. The quality is spun from 3 strands which gives an exciting and rustic stitch definition. DROPS Nepal is an easily knitted/crocheted quality and is also ideal for felting. The felted garments have an even and soft surface.
DROPS Nepal contains mixed colors, this means the wool is manufactured by carding the colors together before spinning, which gives it a mixed effect. Made in Peru.

Handmade cashmere LD
The Kathmandu Valley welcomed its first Kashmiri master weavers from India over four hundred years ago. Today, there are few places in the world where hand-weaving skills are so valued that they are passed down through generations.
You can feel the difference, handcrafting is the most delicate method of expressing the natural elegance and wondrous hand-feel of the finest quality cashmere. Each production step is enhanced by the sensitive interaction of hand and yarn. Throughout the manufacturing process we use Himalayan spring water, it’s softness and minerals add to the natural suppleness of the yarn.

ODYSSEY LOMANTHANG
Welcoming vistas
Taking you through forbidden lands and witnessing its mystical festivals, Genesis Adventures offers a six-day itinerary for novices and adventurers alike to Lo Manthang
Recognized as the rain shadow region in the country, the infinite rocky terrains and sleepy hamlets along the way is a welcome respite for every traveler. Just the thought of traversing bizarre landscapes beyond the gates of Upper Mustang will surely revive you with vigor. Its capital city, Lo Manthang is different world. Embark on a journey to the place once forbidden and less known.
With precise planning and some dust on your boots you just might witness the widely anticipated annual Tiji festival.
Day 1
Start off with a hefty breakfast at Genesis Café. Fresh faces but with the familiar spirit of exploration, you’ll kick off the journey with a 200 km ride to Pokhara. The seven-hour drive is a breeze – enjoyable pit stops along the highway for lunch and refreshments, favorable weather and interesting company makes it seem way shorter. Your first day ends in Pokhara, ‘The City of Lakes’, Nepal’s top gateway destination for adventure.
Day 2
Today you will ride close to a 158 km, about seven hours to Jomsom. A third of the distance you cover are rocky paths and rugged terrains. High altitudes are quite challenging but one thing becomes clear – the battles uphill are not walks in the park. You’ll stop in Tatopani for a traditional lunch of dal bhat and some rest. You’ll be relieved to see the quaint hamlet of Jomsom, a little picturesque piece of heaven. Reaching your accommodation you can finally unwind, enjoy a meal and call it a night.
Day 3
Waking up to the sight of lofty mountains is a dream many long for. Here, in Jomsom with a mighty view and a bite to grab, it is only a day’s ride to the end destination. With 85 km to cover, you’ll traverse fierce rivers, steep hills and formidable rocky paths of loose sand and gravel.
Connect over pit stops and iconic skylines, we will stop along the way for pleasantries at Chusang and Syanmochen. Huge rocks in bizarre formations and the wild, barren valleys of the forbidden kingdom beckon you, and seven hours later Chosar welcomes you. Impressive as it may sound, an actual cave at Shelkher Guest House will be your home tonight. Take in the sights and sounds as you drift off to sleep.
Day 4
The fourth day we drive towards the Korala border right after a nutritious breakfast. Gaining altitude, the vast horizons will widen at 4660 mt, and you’ll see before your eyes the massive Jong Cave believed to have been built by escapee monks from Tibet. Fuel for the curious, the cave has been dug right out on a hill in the Trans-Himalayan region. With numerous openings and room sort of arrangement, the cave is our next stop. After this touristy experience we then proceed towards Lo Manthang.
Now sharing a priceless experience, revitalized with energy and camaraderie, your group will finally lay their eyes on the surreal valley.
Articulate ceremonies give way to vivid visualizations and concepts of celestial palaces and demons. The three-day festival surely is the coming together of Tibetan rituals, dances and prayers, making it by far one of the most colorful events you’ll set eyes on.
The hospitality and the revelry of this close-knit kingdom which was forbidden up until the 90’s, is a memory you won’t easily forget. As the day unfolds and dusk falls upon us, you will be assigned to your homely accommodations after a grand meal.
Day 5
Waving and saying your goodbyes aren’t easy, but it is an equally long way back which is why you’ll set out for Lete today. A 110 km drive that can take up to seven hours, you’ll be on the road after breakfast. A rocky descent, we will be pit stopping through picture-perfect Chusang and Marpha. We’ll call it a day upon reaching Lete.
Day 6
An early morning departure from Lete unfurls a breath-taking sight. Appreciate the breeze and the journey you have just taken. On the way we’ll come across Tatopani and Kushma, perfect stops to rejuvenate ourselves. Tatopani is a natural hot spring known to ease ailments of joints and most importantly to relieve passers-by of weariness. A quick dip and a meal later, we’ll be back on our saddles again. Covering a distance of 133 km over six hours, Pokhara is where we’ll settle for the night.
Day 7
Continuing the last leg of the itinerary, today will be a relaxed ride to Kathmandu. After a stroll around Lakeside and a comfortably satisfying lunch, we proceed to a 200 km ride to Kathmandu, where it all started. Reaching the winding uphill roads to Kathmandu, one may wonder how far we’ve come. Closing the ‘Lo Manthang Odyssey’ to an exceptional end, you’ll make your way once again to Genesis Café for some light hearted fun.
Special Thanks for supporting our ride.

Rural Life in Nepal नेपालको गाउँले जीवन
Rural Life in Nepal नेपालको गाउँले जीवन
Nepali villages are very close-knit communities. The mountainous terrain of Nepal and the lack of roads means that getting around takes time, and access to things like schools or hospitals is very difficult. It’s not uncommon for children to have to spend two hours walking to school, or for hospital to be a two day trek away.
As a result, Nepali villages are largely self-dependent. There is little evidence of the outside world – either very limited shops or none at all, no sign of the government, no police or health-workers. Many have no electricity and few have running water. If a Nepali wants something they normally have to do it themselves.
This separation has resulted in a diverse mass of ethnic groups, languages and cultural practices. Often one village’s practices are different from the next, even though they are only an hours walk apart.
Villages in Nepal are vibrant, noisy, and communal places and the social, economic, and political centres of Nepali life.
Each village is usually made up of a number of different ethnic groups living side by side somewhat harmoniously, and who can trace back their history and relationships within the community for at least several generations.
Often village members are related to each other and to other villages in the region and families often look for marital possibilities for their daughters and sons. Villages are usually spread quite wide and the following graph shows how far villagers must walk to reach amenities:
