Why do Mormons LOVE Nauvoo, Illinois??
The population of Nauvoo, Illinois is just over 1,000. So why are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as Mormons) so aware of and slightly obsessed with Nauvoo?
Nauvoo is an important part of the history of the Church of Jesus Christ. Shortly after the Church was organized, persecutions against the Church were rampant. Latter-day Saints (members of the Church) were forced out of their homes and ended up settling in Nauvoo. Nauvoo is where many important revelations occurred during the time of continued persecution. Eventually the saints were forced to flee once again and ended up settling in the western United States (with the Church headquartered in what is now Salt Lake City Utah).

Home to the Latter-Day Saints from 1838 to 1846. Nauvoo, the Beautiful, was one of the largest cities in the United States during this time period, rivaling Chicago in population. Joseph Smith, The Prophet, loved this City, the Temple, and the Saints of the Most High. Nauvoo, as its name implies, is a place of peace and rest, and is still one of the most beautiful cities in the United States.

The Nauvoo Illinois Temple is the 113th dedicated temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .It is the third such temple that has been built in Illinois .Located in the town of Nauvoo, the temple's construction was announced on April 4, 1999, by church president Gordon B.Hinckley.

Discovering Nauvoo
Thanksgiving morning I had the chance film for few hours in and around Nauvoo, Ill. This is a sacred spot for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. On the swampy banks of the Mississippi they turned a tiny town into a thriving city with close 15,000 residents. Some of my ancestors helped settled the area in the 1840's before they were forced to leave the state. Their dedication to their faith continues to inspire us today. Hopefully I captured a little of that in the video. Music by Chris Coleman deeper.

Joseph Smith and Masonry | Now You Know
Joseph Smith, founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a Freemason. Freemasonry is a centuries-old, worldwide group of fraternal organizations. While some of its teachings are kept confidential, it promotes loyalty and morality and invites its members to seek knowledge and opportunities to serve others.
The early 19th century saw a surge of Freemasonry in the United States. Elected officials such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and other signers of the Declaration of Independence were known Freemasons. As many as 1,500 members of the Church in Nauvoo, Illinois, were also listed as Masons.
In the years before he became a Mason, Joseph Smith received revelations about specific promises, or covenants, to be made between Church members and God. These covenants are presented to Church members in their holy temples through a ceremony known as the endowment.
Some similarities have been raised between Masonic ceremonies and the endowment ceremony. Ancient parallels may exist between the two ceremonies, as well as some similarities in instructional style. However, the purposes of the two ceremonies stand distinct.
The Freemason ceremonies promote self-improvement, brotherhood, and charity as a means to create a better society. The endowment ceremony focuses on obeying God’s laws and using the Atonement of Jesus Christ to gain eternal exaltation. The most important distinction is that the endowment ceremony is purely the result of divine inspiration.
Today members of the Church are free to explore Freemasonry or any other organization which encourages good citizenship and uplifts and improves its members.

is a video describing how to learn more about the Mormon Church.
When members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) were driven out of Missouri and Kirtland they traveled to Illinois where the settled in Commerce, renamed Nauvoo by the Mormons. They drained the swamps and established a beautiful city which swelled to a population of 20,000 by 1846.
While in Nauvoo, hundreds of Mormon missionaries were sent on missions to the United States, England, and the Pacific Isles. Many thousands who joined the Church traveled to unite themselves with the Saints in Nauvoo.
Only 15 months after founding Nauvoo Joseph Smith announced that it was time to erect a house of prayer, a house of order, a house for the worship of our God, where the ordinances can be attended to agreeable to His divine will. Men donated each tenth day to work on the Mormon temple. Members sacrificed personal belongings to fund the project.
For six years members of the Mormon Church lived in relative peace, secure in the fact that a prophet walked and labored among them. But as Mormon history repeats itself this peace was short-lived as Nauvoo was seen as a political and economic threat by neighboring communities. Joseph Smith, his brother Hyrum, and other Church leaders were jailed in Carthage Jail.
On 27 June 1844 a mob stormed the jail and Joseph Smith and Hyrum were killed. Thousands of Saints lined the street to mourn the loss of their prophet.
Illinois Governor Thomas Ford wrote of the martyrdom: The murder of the Smiths, instead of putting an end to ... the Mormons and dispersing them, as many believed it would, only bound them together closer than ever, gave them new confidence in their faith.
