Russia: Ukraine Navy's sole submarine joins Black Sea Fleet
The Ukrainian Navy's sole submarine, the Zaporizhya, raised the St. Andrew's ensign and Russian Naval Jack flag in Sevastopol on Saturday, as it became part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
The Foxtrot class diesel-electric powered vessel has begun relocating from Streletskaya Bay to South Bay, where the Black Sea Fleet's submarine division is located.
The Zaporizhya had been part of the Ukrainian Navy since 1997, having been commissioned into the Soviet Navy in 1970. It is 70.10 metres (230 feet) in length, can travel at 16.05 knots (30 km/h) submerged and has a submerged displacement of 2,471 tonnes.

Walking Along The Black Sea in Sevastopol, Ukraine
Don't hesitate to join the crowds walking around Sevastopol's waterfront and streets. There are museums, stores, important historical monuments, restaurants, parks and beautiful women! Even I joined Steve to gawk at these tall, slender, beautiful, long-legged blondes and brunettes; so gorgeous!
Along the waterfront is a mini-amusement park with rides, souvenir stalls, stands selling food (Hot dogs, ice cream), and carnival attractions. I almost bought one of the maritime hats being sold throughout Sevastopol as a souvenir like the one driver Yuri wore but then thought better of it. A fun break before the ship sailed for Yalta; a destination visited by millions of Ukrainians and Russians during the summer.
Russia: Crimean War soldiers' remains discovered near Sevastopol
Landscape workers stumbled across the remains of officers and soldiers from the Crimean War as they carried out improvement works in Sevastopol on Wednesday.
Buttons, fragments of cloth, and bullets indicated that the remains belong to soldiers of the Crimean War (1853-1856).
Chair of Sevastopol Association of search groups Marina Gavrilenko explained that the artefacts show that the remains are of Russian soldiers.
SOT, Marina Gavrilenko, Chair of Sevastopol Association of search groups (Russian): We found fragments of uniforms, buttons that clearly indicate that they belong to Russian soldiers. It is now difficult to determine whether it was the first defence or a few days earlier or later. People from the archive and museum will determine the time of burial more accurately.

Executions in Sebastopol ww2 - part 1
The Soviet naval base at Sevastopol was one of the strongest fortifications in the world. Its site, on a deeply eroded, bare limestone promontory at the South-Western tip of the Crimea made an approach by land forces exceedingly difficult. The high-level cliffs at Severnaya Bay protected the anchorage, making an amphibious landing just as dangerous. The Soviet Navy had built upon these natural defences by modernising the port and installing heavy coastal and artillery defences which could fire inland and out to sea. The artillery was protected by strong concrete and armoured turrets. The port was a valuable target. Its importance as a potential naval and air base would enable the Axis to conduct far ranging sea and air operations against Soviet targets into and over the Caucasus ports and mountains. The Red Air Force had been using the Crimea as a base to attack targets in Romania since the Axis invasion in June 1941, proving its use as an air base.
Since the beginning of Barbarossa, the planned offensive in the east had not really addressed the Crimea as an objective. German planners assumed the area would be captured in mop-up operations once the bulk of the Red Army was destroyed west of the Dnepr river. But in June attacks by Soviet aircraft from the Crimea against Romania's oil refineries destroyed 11,000 tons of oil. Hitler described the area as a floating aircraft carrier and ordered the conquest of the Ukraine and the Crimea as vital targets in the Directive 33, dated 23 July 1941.
The Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW) issued orders that the Crimea was to be taken as soon as possible to prevent attacks on Romanian oil supplies, which fed the German military. Hitler, impatient with his commands advance in the south, repeated his desire that the Crimea be taken immediately on 12 August. Over a month later, during the capture of Kiev, Generaloberst Erich von Manstein was given command of the German 11th Army on 17 September. After only a week in command, he launched an assault upon the Crimea. After severe fighting, von Manstein defeated several Soviet counter-offensives and destroyed two Soviet armies. By 16 November, von Manstein had cleared the region, capturing its capital Simferopol, on 1 November. The fall of Kerch on 16 November left only Sevastopol in Soviet hands.
Fortunately for the Soviets, by the end of October 1941, Major-General Ivan Yefimovich Petrov's Independent Coastal Army, numbering 32,000 men, had arrived in Sevastopol by sea from Odessa, further west, having been routed in heavy fighting. Petrov set about fortifying the inland approaches to the Crimea. He aimed to halt the Axis drive on the port by creating three defence lines inland, the outermost arc being 16km (10 mi) from the port itself. Soviet forces, including the Soviet 51st Army and elements of the Black Sea Fleet, were defeated in the Crimea in October and were evacuated in December leaving Petrov's force as Sevastopol's main defence force. Having cleared the Crimea from 26 September--16 November, the Romanian 3rd Army and German 11th Army prepared for an attack on the port. The German 11 Army was the weakest on the entire front, containing only seven divisions intitially. The Romanians made up the numbers, but were poorly trained, led and only lightly equipped. The weather turned against the Axis in mid-October and torrential downpours delayed the build up. This gave time for Vice Admiral Filipp Oktyabrsky, commander of the Black Sea Fleet, to bring in men and ammunition from Novorossisk. By the 17 December the weather had cleared sufficiently to begin a major operation.

I do not know how in the West, Russians believe the concept of Nazism and fascism as synonyms. When we say Kiev Nazis or fascists from Western Ukraine, we mean the same thing.
Namely, people who are obsessed with Hitler about the superiority of one race or nation over others.
In Western Ukrainian fascists (Nazis) has its heroes. This is Bandera, Shukhevych who were servants of Hitler in World War II.
So..There is a war between the Russians, the local population that lives here 1000 years and the Nazi government in Kiev, which the United States led to power.
As a result of the bloody coup, the Nazis from Western Ukraine came to power.
They are a minority, and in the case of democratic elections, they would never have come to power. Then the United States made a bloody coup, as they are able to do it all over the world.
Thus, the United States went to war against the Russian population of the South and East of Ukraine, who lived here 1,000 years and no where to go will not, of course.
I'd like to work for the Russian government, but do not work.
And actually just want to help as best I can. To bring the truth to the world. Free of charge and at the expense of their own time.
I do not know about a help from Russia. Maybe it goes. Also, do not know, maybe go help with the West for Kiev.
What else?
Russian Donbas really fighting against fascism! The Nazis came to power in Kiev seriously consider themselves a superior race. It's funny to hear for non-Ukrainians. But it is. Ukrainians in fact it is Russians. Western historians only in the 20th century had called their - Ukrainians .
Ukrainians do not fight against the Donbas, almost. Basically, fighting Nazis from western Ukraine.
And he led the Ukrain. Nazis to power.
Putin does not want the new lands, otherwise would have long ago captured the whole of the Ukraine, easy!
The Kiev Nazis commit genocide!
Ask if something is unclear, I will answer.

Read more Information about our Ukraine River Cruise:
Welcome to Ukraine, one of Europe's last hidden treasures. Long in the shadow of the Soviet Empire, this lovely country, rich in history, culture and natural beauty, regained its independence in 1991 and opened its doors to the world. From gorgeous Odessa, the gateway to the Black Sea, to Yalta and its world-class beaches, to Zaporozhye, the home of the fearless Cossack warriors, and to cosmopolitan Kiev, with its wide, tree-lined boulevards and a thousand-year-old history, Ukraine is a true treasure chest of natural and man-made attractions waiting to be explored. We are pleased to introduce to you this new and exciting travel destination in the hopes that we may one day share in the pleasure of your company as you discover Ukraine with us.
One of the best ways to explore this diverse country is by cruising the magnificent Dnieper River. At 1,420 miles in length, it is the third longest river in Europe, after the Volga and the Danube. The benefits of a river cruise are many. No packing and unpacking, as our floating hotel will take you from one exciting destination to the next. All your meals are included, as are most of your shore excursions. Our on-board staff of guides, cruise directors, and talented entertainers will delight you with their lectures, music, and hospitality. Sit back and enjoy an unforgettable journey from Odessa to Kiev, and all of the unique Ukrainian stops in between.
As either a starting or ending point for our cruises, Odessa is sure to delight you. A mild climate and a youthful, vibrant population have drawn the rich and the famous to this Black Sea port for centuries. Its most famous citizen, the French Duke De Richelieu, transformed the city into a thriving center of commerce and culture. Its Opera House, and the Potemkin Stairs, are world-renowned, while its tree-lined promenades and classical buildings painted in pastel hues invoke another era. Life on board our floating hotel will be as exciting as the ports you will be visiting.
Our first stop, Sevastopol, is home to the Russian Navy's feared Black Sea Fleet. Closed to foreign visitors until the early 1990s, Sevastopol today is a city of clean and orderly boulevards, neo-classical Russian buildings, and the unique Panorama Museum. As our ship sails from Sevastopol to Yalta, the optional bus excursion across the Crimean peninsula will take you to see the unique cliff-side fortress of Swallow's Nest. The historic Livadia Palace, the location where Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill decided the fate of post-war Europe, will be equally impressive. Stunningly situated between the Crimean mountains and the Black Sea, Yalta has been a major destination for poets, politicians, artists, writers, and the Russian Czar's family. Kherson is the gateway to the Dnieper delta. Here, you will board smaller boats that will take you to an authentic Ukrainian fishing village. A local family will host an al fresco lunch, accompanied with some improvised entertainment.
Zaporozhye, a name that conjures up images of fierce, pony-tailed warriors, is also the home of the first independence movements of Ukraine. Here you will enjoy a tour of the city, and a visit to the unique Zaporozhye Cossack museum. The optional Cossack show will feature their horsemanship, weapon skills, and music. Home to Ukraine's favorite son, Taras Shevchenko, Kanev is both his birthplace and burial ground. After a tour of his museum, you will enjoy a special shashlik barbecue. There will be wine, entertainment, and a selection of songs performed by our enthusiastic flower girls.
Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, is also recognized as the birthplace of Kievan Rus, or Russia. It came to be in 988, when Prince Vladmir the Great baptized the whole country and introduced Christianity to this part of the world. Today, it's a city of wide boulevards, giant chestnut trees, and a smiling and youthful population. The people are friendly, the city is beautiful. We hope you have enjoyed our short intro to Ukraine. we also hope we will have the pleasure of your company in the nearest future, as we sail along the beautiful Black Sea and the romantic Dnieper River.
