Cunard Queen Elizabeth • St. Petersburg, Russia • Baltic Sea Cruise • July 22/23, 2017
Cunard's cruise liner Queen Elizabeth in the port of St. Petersburg, Russia on July 22 and 23, 2017 as part of the 14 night Baltic Highlights Cruise.
Peter & Paul Fortress & Neva River Cruise Tour:
From 1721 the Peter and Paul Fortress housed part of the city's garrison and served as a high security political jail. Among the inmates was Peter's own rebellious son, Alexei, plus Gorky, Trotsky and Lenin's older brother, Alexander.
Views of the impressive Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of all the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great to Nicholas II. On top of the Cathedral’s gilded spire stands a magnificent golden angel holding a cross. This weathervane is one of the most prominent symbols of St. Petersburg.
From the pier, not far from the Peter and Paul Fortress, cruising along the Neva River, you’ll see some of the city’s famous landmarks, including the former Stock Exchange flanked by two Rostral Columns, the State Hermitage Museum including the Winter Palace, the famous cruiser Aurora, the Bronze Horseman and the St. Isaac Cathedral.
Flowing through the city of St. Petersburg, the River Neva is an essential part of its charm, and has played an important part in numerous historical events. The width of the river ranges from an impressive 1,300 to 2,000 feet, however near the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Hermitage it exceeds 2,600 feet wide. In preparation for the Navy Day celebration of July 30, 2017, naval ships are moored in the Neva River.
Saint Petersburg Travel Guide - A Russian Beauty Experience
Saint Petersburg Travel Guide - A Russian Beauty Experience
Saint Petersburg is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places on earth and virtually any building in the large historic centre, threaded with canals dotted with baroque bridges, can be considered an attraction—and indeed, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a magical city, with a long list of major attractions. Its Hermitage Museum, housed in the Winter Palace of the Romanov Dynasty, is both one of the world's greatest and oldest collections of art, treasure, and antiquities, and one of its most beautiful buildings.
Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, in the territory of the Inkeri town of Nien which was a capital of Finno-Ugric province Ingermanland which was part of Novgorod Republic, and Sweden. The creation of westward-looking Peter the Great, St Petersburg was intended from its inception as a display of imperial Russia’s growing status in the world. Fine-tuned by Peter’s successors, who employed a host of European architects to add fabulous palaces and cathedrals to the city’s layout, St Petersburg grew to be the Romanovs’ showcase capital and Russia’s first great, modern city. The capital may have moved back to Moscow following the revolution, but despite all that history has thrown at it, St Petersburg still feels every bit the imperial city with its historic heart largely frozen in time.
Whether you’re cruising along the elegant canals, crossing one of the 342 bridges in the city, or just watching them being raised in summer over the mighty Neva River at night to allow ships to pass through, you’re never far from water in St Petersburg. This has earned the city unsurprising comparisons to Venice, but the similarities don’t stop there: walking around the historic centre will reveal canals lined by Italianate mansions and broken up by striking plazas adorned with baroque and neoclassical palaces. North of the city centre there are also pristine beaches fringing the Gulf of Finland.
St Petersburg is an almost unrivalled treasure trove of art and culture. You can spend days in the Hermitage, seeing everything from Egyptian mummies to Picassos, while the Russian Museum, spread over four sumptuous palaces, is perhaps the best collection of Russian art in the world. Add to this world-class ballet, opera and classical concerts at the illustrious performance halls, and a slew of big-name music festivals over the summer months, and you won’t be stuck for cultural nourishment. Contemporary art is also available at the fantastic Erarta Museum, the Street Art Museum and in the buzzing gallery scene.
Summer White Nights are legendary: the northern sun barely dips below the horizon. Revelry begins in May, with parks and gardens greening with flowering trees, and peaks in mid-June when performing arts festivals pack out concert halls and the entire city seems to party all night long. It's the busiest time to visit and the crowds can often be overwhelming. But Piter, as the city is affectionately known, is just as beautiful in early spring, golden autumn and even winter: the skies may be leaden and the ground covered in snow, but the culture still dazzles and delights.
Saint Petersburg's metro system is the second largest in Russia, after that of Moscow. The metro is a cheap and effective way to get around the city, and also a major tourist attraction due to the beautiful decorations of the stations.

???? The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini's designs from 1706 to 1740 as a star fortress. In the early 1920s, it was still used as a prison and execution ground by the Bolshevik government.
Today it has been adapted as the central and most important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. The museum has gradually become virtually the sole owner of the fortress building, except the structure occupied by the Saint Petersburg Mint (Monetniy Dvor).

Vasilyevsky Island (Russian: Васи́льевский о́стров, Vasilyevsky Ostrov, V.O.) is an island in St. Petersburg, Russia, bordered by the Bolshaya Neva and Malaya Neva Rivers (in the delta of the Neva River) in the south and northeast, and by the Gulf of Finland in the west. Vasilyevsky Island is separated from Dekabristov Island by the Smolenka River. Together they form the territory of Vasileostrovsky District, an administrative division of Saint Petersburg.
Situated just across the river from the Winter Palace, it constitutes a large portion of the city's historic center. Two of the most famous St. Petersburg bridges, Palace Bridge and Blagoveshchensky Bridge, connect it with the mainland to the south. The Exchange Bridge and Tuchkov Bridge across the Malaya Neva connect it with Petrogradsky Island. Vasilyevsky Island is served by Vasileostrovskaya and Primorskaya stations of Saint Petersburg Metro (Line 3 Spb metro line3.svg). There are plans to build new Metro stations on Vasilyevsky Island by extending Line 4 (the Orange Line) to the Island. In addition, the island is serviced by bus routes and tramway lines.
The easternmost tip of the island, called Strelka (spit, literally Arrow), features a number of museums, including the Old Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange (Bourse) as well as two Rostral columns, and is a popular tourist attraction. The edifices lining the Universitetskaya Embankment along the Bolshaya Neva include the Kunstkamera, Twelve Collegia, Menshikov Palace, Imperial Academy of Sciences, and St. Andrew's Cathedral – all dating from the 18th century. In the island center there is a considerable Museum of electrical transport organised by transport history enthusiasts. It is based at the oldest Vasileostrovsky tram depot. Another recent notable attraction was an animated floating anchored illuminated musical fountain located just off the Spit.[4]
In contrast with the Neva embankments in the historical center, the western part of the island was developed much later, in the late Soviet times, and has mostly typical Soviet apartment blocks. A monument to Vasily, the legendary Peter I's local gunners' battery commander after whom the island may have been named, was opened in 2003.
The principal buildings of Saint Petersburg State University are located on the island and include the Twelve Collegia by Domenico Tresini (1722–44) and the former palace of Peter II of Russia.

Walking Along the Neva River, Touring Peter and Paul Fortress & Cathedral in St. Petersburg, Russia
Second day in Saint Petersburg, Russia! This day starts with us walking along the Neva River, first from Petrogradskaya in the northern part of the city - this is where the Peter and Paul Fortress sits, and affords great views toward the main portion of the city, including Winter Palace/Hermitage Museum, St. Issac's Cathedral, Admiralty Building, etc. In addition, Vasilievskiy Island is easily visible with its Rostral Columns as well!
One interesting point - at the 1:21 minute mark a huge bang is heard...this is their 12PM (noon) cannon fired from inside the fortress, which I was NOT expected and was indeed incredibly loud, as I state in the video!!
After this, we head inside the Peter and Paul Cathedral, where the vast majority of the Romanov family members were buried - this includes Peter the Great, founder of St. Petersburg, as well as Catherine the Great and many more.
Construction on this fortress began immediately after St. Petersburg's founding in 1703 and is known as the birthplace of the city - in fact, Peter the Great's original cabin he lived in during this time is just a short walk away. Though changed quite a bit since that time, the fortress is most famous not for defending the city in battle as intended, but rather for its political prisoners held in Trubetskoy Bastion. The inmates including hundreds of revolutionaries over the years, including Fyodor Dostoevsky after the 1825 Decembrist Rebellion, Leon Trotsky and Lenin's older brother during the early Bolshevik period prior to the 1917 Revolution.
There is no place in SPB so intricately and historically linked to this city - this is the city at its oldest and most original, definitely a highlight on any trip to the Venice of the North!

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
