TOUR: Peru's Paracas Coastline and Nazca Lines
Just to the south of Lima lies the wild beauty of the Paracas coastline and the variety of marine life that visit it has afforded it national park status and protection. Many even call the Ballestas Islands here as Peru's answer to the Galapagos. Home also to the fascinating and still largely unexplained ancient geoglyphs, the Nazca Lines, the only way to see these is to fly over them; seen here in this video. For more information on our private, luxury and tailor made tours to Paracas and Nazca, there is more information here:
A flight on Aerodiana - Pisco Peru to the Nazca Lines
A flight from Pisco Airport Peru to view the Nazca lines.
Aerodiana in June 2018
Cessna 208
The front row seat 2 was occupied by a flight inspector so we felt very safe even though the Nazca flights by smaller planes have a patchy safety record. Aerodiana seemed a very professional outfit.
Pisco airport is very weird. A large airport but no flights except Aerodiana Nazca flights. The terminal is deserted, but still fully staffed. Outside it's right by a fish factory and it has a bit of an aroma! The taxi driver waited for us!
There was a shopping mall upstairs at the airport, deserted. We still went through security, seems we had to put our water bottles through the scanner, strange. Departures, all unused. There were only 4 flights that day, all Aerodiana Nazca flights. There were a few private planes on the ramp, but nothing else.
Great flight and the video doesn't really do the figures in the desert justice. You can see them in the video but easier with the eyeball.
Smooth flight, well recommended if you're in Pisco Peru.

Nazca Lines, Peru (Tiny Airplane Flight)
The Nazca lines are large geoglyphs that are spread across more than 80 km (50 mi) of desert land between Nazca and Palpa. There are hundreds of geometric lines and shapes and over 70 zoomorphic animals. Researchers believe that the Nazca culture created these lines between 500 BCE and 500 CE. On the ground , he lines appear to be hills that are part of the natural landscape. From above (aerial view), one can see the colossal, stunning images created many many years ago including a hummingbird, monkey, spider, lizard, condor, and flamingo. Scientists have speculated both about how the lines were made and what the purpose of the Nazca lines are. Some scientists believe that small teams of Nazca people could have dug the lines without aerial assistance and primitive tools in just a couple of days. The lines themselves are just 10-15 cm deep ( 4-6 in) and with the perfect combination of dry, hot, still air, the lines would remain uncovered and visible. There are several theories behind why the Nazca lines were made. Some believe the Nazca created the lines so they could be seen by their gods in the sky. Others believe that figures represented constellations while others believed that the figures were part of religious practices involving the worship of gods associated with water.

10-Day DIY Peru Itinerary: Cusco, Lares Trek, Machu Picchu, Paracas, Ica, and Huacachina
We lived in Peru for several months in 2018. We hiked many of the treks to Machu Picchu unsupported and visited Machu Picchu several times.
We crafted this 10-day itinerary to showcase our favorite parts of Peru when we had family visit. It's our best-of-the-best for the Cusco and Lima areas.
Day 1: Arrive in Cusco
Day 2: Tour Cusco to acclimate
Day 3: Lares Trek
Day 4: Lares Trek to Ollantaytambo
Day 5: Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes
Day 6: Hike Machu Picchu and return to Cusco
Day 7: Lima to Paracas
Day 8: Paracas' Islas Ballestas to Tacama Vineyard to Huacachina
Day 9: Huacachina to Lima.
Day 10: Depart Lima
Cusco:
The San Blas neighborhood is our spot of choice to stay. Hike up to San Cristobal Church for the views. Browse the San Pedro Market and Artesenias Asuntas' shop. Our favorite restaurants include Morena, Green Point, Organika, Chakruna Nativa Burgers, the Green Falafel, La Boheme, the Churro Bar, and UFO Udon. Our favorite drink spots include Limbus Restobar, Paddy's, Nuevo Mundo, and Fallen Angel.
The Lares Trek:
We hiked the Northern Weaver's route of the Lares Trek. This route is of lower elevation than Salkantay and shorter. To get to Lares, we hired a private tour van (S/. 250). Stop at the llama and alpaca farm Awana Kancha. From there, we drove through Calca and onto Lares.
We got dropped off at the hot springs (S/. 10 per person), which were magnificent. The Lares trek starts from the hot springs, and we hiked 3-hours to Huacahuasi. A friendly family allowed us to camp in their yard. The next morning, we continued to the highest pass at Abra Ipsay, 3 hours from Huacahuasi. Then, we stopped to trout fish at the large lake just off the pass and continued downhill to Patacancha. In Patacancha, we hired a van onto Ollantaytambo, a 1-hour drive.
You can do this with a guide or not. All hiking equipment can be rented at the shops around the side streets leading to Plaza de Armas. You won't get lost. The trails are well marked and on apps like Mapout or Maps.me.
Ollantaytambo:
Ollantaytambo is the charming town and gateway to Machu Picchu. People usually only go to the train station, but we enjoyed staying there for at least a whole day. The Ollantaytambo Ruins are a wonderfully preserved Inca village. We also hiked the free ruins on the opposite mountain, Pinkuylluna, and enjoyed them even more. We also enjoyed exploring the small square and visiting the little shops. We recommend a gorgeous hotel on the edge of town, Apu Lodge. We left Ollantaytambo on the 4:30 PM train. Sit on the left side of the train for the best views!
Aguas Calientes:
We have stayed at both La Cabañas and Mantu Boutique. We preferred Mantu Boutique, which is also a lower cost. Our absolute favorite restaurant is Mapacho Brewery. On the morning of our hike to Machu Picchu, we paid $24 for round-trip bus tickets to the ruins. We arrived in line around 4:45 AM and caught a bus 45-minutes later.
Machu Picchu:
We have hiked both Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain. Both take around 1-1.5 hours to summit. We would recommend the later time-frame of 10:00 AM instead of 7:00 AM. We recommend this because you'll want to take photos in Machu Picchu early in the morning before the hike and before the crowds arrive. Also, the clouds seem to clear later in the morning (in Oct-Nov).
Paracas:
After visiting Machu Picchu, we flew to Lima and got a rental car. The driving in Lima can be tricky, but the coastal highway was easy. There are tolls and many police checkpoints. Make sure the police return ALL of your items after each checkpoint because we did have a driver's license stolen unknowingly.
The drive to Paracas took 4-hours. We stayed at the fun backpacker hostel, Kokopelli. This hostel was beachfront, had an excellent bar, pool, and evening games like beer pong and foosball tournaments. The next day, we took the 2-hour boat tour to Islas Ballestas, where we saw the Peru boobies, sea lions, penguins, and the Inca Tern. We also caught sight of the Candelabra, a cousin to the Nazca Lines.
Ica:
From Paracas, we drove 2-hours to the small city of Ica. There, we visited the most incredible vineyard we've ever: Viña Tacama. A must-see! We didn't do a full winery tour, although those were available, but stopped in for an incredible lunch.
Huacachina:
From the winery, we drove 30-minutes to the desert oasis of Huacachina. We stayed at the coolest hostel, Desert Nights Ecocamp. We took a 4:30 PM dune buggy and sandboarding tour for the sunset. We loved sandboarding, where we went down headfirst, and honestly, looked a lot more fun than skiing and snowboarding. Huacachina was a huge highlight.

THIS IS UNREAL!! | Peru Desert Oasis of Huacachina | The Oasis of America
After Paracas, our adventure continues at our next stop: the Huacachina, Peru.
Huacachina is known for its Peru Desert Oasis, called the Oasis of America. This is South America’s only natural desert Oasis.
We take you on a small tour of Huacachina and Halef tries a dish called Carapulcra. Then, it's up, up, up for a Huacahina sunset. It gets cold when the sun goes down, so it's back to the Wild Rover Hostel to get a bit of sleep.
....or maybe that was wishful thinking.
And it's all part of our Peru Hop experience. Want to know more about our two week adventure with Peru Hop:
Here's more on Authentic Peruvian dishes you have to try:
Our experience with Huacachina sandboarding and dune buggies will be featured on our next vlog -

Nasca Lines take off.
I managed to fly over the Nasca Lines in June 2011. If was an interesting experience. The flight is very bumpy and if you are prone to motion sickness this is going to make you sick. As you can see i was right behind the two pilots. The cost was 85 dollars cus i was by myself but if your group is large enough you could probably fly cheaper. There are a total of 12 or 13 lines on the tour that last about 40-50 minutes. I cant speak for the other tour companies but the one we use would fly over each line twice. once for the people on the left and once for the people on the right. Each time we would fly over one of the lines the pilots would tilt the plane 45 degrees so you could see the lines by looking straight out the window instead of trying to look down.
PeruRoadTrip GoPro Paracas & Ballestas Islands
Only 4 easy hours from the capital city of Peru you will find paradise in the middle of the desert. PeruRoadTrip goes on yet another adventure, this time to Paracas Nature Reserve and the Ballestas Islands. This trip from Lima can be done in 1 day, or to get the full experience you can stay the night at the oasis in Huacachina and ride on dune buggies and go sand boarding. You can see this activity in our Huacachina sand boarding video. The overnight tour leaves from Lima in the morning arriving in Ica/Huacachina in the early afternoon. After checking into your hotel and lunch at the oasis the real fun begins. The dune buggy and sand board tour begins at 4pm and then you watch the sun go down from the dunes. The next morning we drive out to Paracas, navigating through the reserve in a private 4x4 vehicle. After a boat ride to view the islands and the sea life up close we return to Lima in the evening. Huacachina Desert Oasis, Peru
Huacachina Desert Oasis, Peru
Huacachina is a village in the Ica Region, in southwestern Peru. It is located in the Ica Province, near the city of Ica in the Ica District. Huacachina is built around a small natural lake in the desert. Called the oasis of America, it serves as a resort for local families from the nearby city of Ica, and increasingly as an attraction for tourists drawn by the sports of sandboarding and taking dune buggy rides on sand dunes that stretch several hundred feet high. Huacachina has a population of 115 in 1999. The oasis features on the back of the 50 Nuevo Sol note. Legend holds that the lagoon was created when a beautiful native princess was apprehended at her bath by a young hunter. She fled, leaving the pool of water she had been bathing in to become the lagoon. The folds of her mantle, streaming behind her as she ran, became the surrounding sand dunes. And the woman herself is rumored to still live in the oasis as a mermaid.
Currently, private landowners near the oasis have installed wells, in order to access the groundwater. This has had the effect of drastically reducing the level of water in the oasis. To compensate for this water loss, and preserve the oasis as an aesthetically pleasing destination for tourists, the city began a process of artificially pumping water into the oasis. More at Huacachina.
Huachachina, tucked in between sand dunes, flourished in the 1940s and 1950s as a getaway for the Peruvian elite and regained a certain prominence through tourism promotion campaigns in the 1990s. Today it is a backpacker’s paradise and a top destination for sandboarding and dunebuggy rides, but the lagoon’s own water supply needs to be constantly supplemented from other sources. A local legend has it that the lagoon was created when an inquisitive young hunter disturbed a beautiful princess while she was bathing. She fled, leaving the pool of water behind which became the lagoon.
