Ned Smith Center Amphitheater Challenge Grant
In the days of Shakespeare, the outdoor amphitheater was created to inspire a harmony between nature and the performing arts. The Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art's Amphitheater will be nestled on the hillside just below the Sourbeer and Lick Education Building, capitalizing on the site's great beauty—a forested view overlooking the Wiconisco Creek and Berry's Mountain.
The Amphitheater will have a significant impact on the surrounding area and will create a regional destination with the ability to attract nationally-known performers. It will provide an opportunity to collaborate with our three resident companies, the Twin Valley Players community theater, the Pennsylvania Regional Ballet and the Harrisburg Shakespeare Festival, in addition to our partnerships with other nationally-recognized organizations, including the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra.
This project will enhance the Center's proud tradition of educating students from Central Pennsylvania and beyond. Each year more than 3,000 children are introduced to the joy of Ned Smith's life and legacy in the outdoors through school programs, summer camps, family activities and national exhibitions. Most importantly, the Amphitheater will create a lasting legacy for future generations to be inspired by nature and the arts just as it did in Shakespeare's time.
We hope you will join us in building our new vision.
Harrisburg students release trout into Wiconisco
By: Brandon Smith
MILLERSBURG, Pa. -- Students from the Marshall Math and Science Academy in Harrisburg released around 100 brook trout into the Wiconisco Creek in Millersburg on Tuesday.
It's part of the Trout in the Classroom Program, a project organized by Trout Unlimited and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The program works with students from seven different schools in Dauphin and Lebanon counties.
Students raised the fish from eggs in November, learning the importance of cold water conservation. According to Cyndi Camp with Trout Unlimited, trout, like humans, need cold, clean, and rapidly flowing streams.
This is really an important day for these kids and we hope that they'll be able to come back out there, (and) want to spend more time outside, Camp said.
Following the release of the two-inch trout, students received a tour of the Ned Smith Nature Center.
Glenn Jones - Across the Tappan Zee (w/ Laura Baird) (Official Music Video)
Glenn Jones and Laura Baird perform Across the Tappan Zee from Glenn's new album, My Garden State, Out now on Thrill Jockey Records

5-String Banjo
Tuning: e, C, G, C, D
From the Liner Notes:
In early 2012, Caleb Smith invited Laura Baird and me to perform live to Buster Keaton's silent film classic, Steamboat Bill Jr., at the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art in Millersburg, Pennsylvania. This piece was played under the opening scene, as King's fancy new riverboat (a floating palace) comes tooling around a bend in the river. I love Laura's clawhammer banjo playing and was chuffed (as they say) when she agreed to accompany me on this track.

Mr. H 2018 School Board Campaign Video
Scott Hottenstein for School 2018 Board Hillsborough County.
Retired Naval Officer, Current Teacher Files to Run for School Board
On Friday, November 3, 2017, Scott Hottenstein, a public school teacher from Lithia, FL, filed all the necessary paperwork to run for School Board Member, District 6 in the August 28, 2018, primary election.
Hottenstein, or “Mr. H” as he’s known to the everyone at the school where he teaches, has the necessary leadership, management, and classroom experience to restore FAITH in the School Board, renew FOCUS on the students in the classroom, and ultimately FIX the problems that plague the school district.
“I’m excited to be running!” Hottenstein said. “I think we face some serious issues in the Hillsborough County school district, and we need people on the School Board who will do the necessary homework to find and implement student-centered solutions. I want to be that ‘voice from the classroom’ on the board who advocates for students and teachers.”
Hottenstein, a native of Greenacres, FL, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992 and served for the next twenty years in a wide variety of positions at home and overseas. After retiring from the Navy in 2012, Hottenstein returned to Florida. He earned his teaching certificate, served as a substitute teacher for a year, and became a full-time middle-school social-studies teacher during the 2013-2014 school year. In addition to teaching in the classroom, Hottenstein is the coach of the girls’ track team and the faculty advisor for the Student Government Association and the Chess Club.
Hottenstein is married to a middle school counselor and has two teenage sons who attend local public schools. In the community, Hottenstein has served on his Home Owner’s Association board and has been active in various Naval Academy alumni and church groups.
Hottenstein understands that it will be extremely difficult to run a campaign while remaining a full-time teacher. Scheduling time to meet people and to listen to their concerns will be a difficult task, but Hottenstein is committed. When he reached out to mentors to discuss the possibility of running for School Board, Hottenstein was encouraged by a few to seek a higher office, but he says, “This is my passion! I’m not running for School Board as a stepping stone, I’m running for School Board because I desperately want to improve education in our county.”
