Israel's Netanyahu Declines Meeting With Obama
WASHINGTON Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declined an offer to meet U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House later this month and canceled his trip to Washington, the White House said on Monday. Netanyahu's decision to nix his U.S. visit marked the latest episode in a fraught relationship with Obama that has yet to recover from their deep differences over last year's U.S.-led international nuclear deal with Iran, Israel's arch foe. The White House said the Israeli government had requested a Netanyahu meeting with Obama on either March 18 or 19 and that two weeks ago he was offered a March 18 encounter.

Pence courts evangelical Hispanics in Florida
(17 Jan 2020) US Vice President Mike Pence traveled to the key battleground state of Florida on Thursday, where he courted evangelical Hispanics at an evening rally in Kissimmee.
Less than two weeks ago, Trump visited a Hispanic mega-church in Miami, kicking off an Evangelicals for Trump focus, and Thursday's event was an extension of that.
Kissimmee, which is in Osceola County near Orlando, is heavily Puerto Rican.
The campaign believes that emphasizing religion and anti-abortion talking points could reach those Latino voters who have doubts about Republicans over issues like immigration.
Even attracting a small slice of evangelical Latinos could help Trump win Florida again; he won the state by 1.2 percentage points in 2016.
This afternoon the president of the United States signed a disaster declaration to provide additional support and public assistance to the families in the wake of the hurricanes in Puerto Rico, Pence said.
He worked to energize the crowd of a few hundred people, drawing raucous applause when referencing the administration's defense of anti-abortion policies.
President Donald Trump is the most pro-life president in American history, he said.
Pence also touted the administration's hardline against Iran and the administration's deadly drone strike against Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
Just a few weeks ago with one American life was lost in a shelling on a base in Iraq at the hands of Iranian backed militias, this president launched the first air strikes in 10 years against those militia bases, he said.
And when militants stormed our embassy on New Year's Eve in Baghdad, this president sent in the Marines. No more Benghazi's!
Finally, Pence voiced the administration's support for the opposition in Venezuela.
The United States was the first nation on earth to recognize President Juan Guaidó as the only legitimate president of Venezuela, he said.
And America will stand with the people of Venezuela until their libertad is restored.

Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami visits Israel
Today (Thursday) Feb. 15, 2018, Mayor of Miami Francis Suarez visited Shalva, the Israel Association for Care and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, in Jerusalem, accompanied by several associates.
Suarez and his friends were treated to a personal tour by the Shalva CEO, Yochanan Samuels, who introduced them to the organization's activities. In addition, the group visited the center's various facilities, including kindergartens, swimming pools and a gymnasium, in which the mayor showed off his basketball skills. They met children who attend Shalva and learn there, enjoyed a performance by the band's soloist, and treated themselves to lunch at Café Shalva, situated within the center, and which employs people with disabilities.
Before leaving, Suarez met Yossi Samuels, the son of Shalva's founders, whose care as a child was the impetus for the creation of Shalva. Yossi, blind and deaf, who communicates through tactile sign language in the palm of his hand, thanked the mayor for his visit and asked him to introduce him to President Trump. The mayor invited him to visit Miami, and said that the day will come when Yossi himself will be more important than Donald Trump.
Francis Suarez, Mayor of Miami: The country of Israel is a country that is besieged by threats constantly, and I think there's a much more heightened sense of security, of potential threats, than there is in the United States. It's ironic, because when you see a tragedy like the one we just experienced yesterday, and you see the loss of life and the pervasiveness of guns in the United States, it really does flip that threat level on its head, and makes you wonder where you're really safe and where you're not safe. Safety is something that we often take for granted, unfortunately, and it's incidents such yesterday's that really make us understand how fragile our safety is and how fragile our world is to certain threats. In addition, the mayor said, There were many emotional moments for me, from the moment I arrived until now. One of the most moving was not only hearing the band perform, but one of the singers, Dina Samta, was blind; and to hear her talk about her dream to come to Miami was for me very touching.
Yochanan Samuels, CEO of Shalva: The mayor of Miami's visit was extraordinary, occurring at a difficult time for him, after the terrible shooting in Florida. Nevertheless, he devoted his full attention to the visit at the center, enjoyed meeting the children, and was visibly moved and cried when the children hugged him.
Shalva has been operating for the past 28 years with the goal of providing people with disabilities the highest level of care, supporting their families, and promoting inclusion within society.
The Shalva National Center is the largest and most advanced center in Israel for children with disabilities, and serves over 2'000 children weekly. The center provides therapeutic, vocational and educational treatments, round the clock, free of charge.

Israel's Netanyahu makes first move for new government
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took a first step in forming a new government on Tuesday, announcing a coalition deal with former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and naming her to handle efforts to renew stalled diplomacy with the Palestinians. Netanyahu's choice of Livni, a moderate voice for a government led by his right-wing Likud party, seemed a positive signal ahead of U.S. President Barack Obama's visit next month on a push to resume peace talks deadlocked since 2010. ...

ISRAEL: NETANYAHU CANCELS EAST EUROPEAN TRIP AS SETTLERS DIG IN
Hebrew/Eng/Nat
Ignoring a government plea to leave, Jewish settlers dug in Tuesday and installed beds and floodlights in their new compound in an Arab neighbourhood of Jerusalem.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu postponed a trip to Eastern Europe, saying he would not leave, as scheduled, on Wednesday.
Israel's attorney general toured the settler compound Tuesday and was to meet with Netanyahu on Tuesday evening.
The attorney general is to rule whether the settlers can be evicted on grounds that their presence in east Jerusalem - the sector claimed by the Palestinians as a future capital -endangers national security.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Tuesday that he is postponing a trip to Europe because of the continuing tense situation in the east Jerusalem Arab neighbourhood of Ras al-Amud.
SOUNDBITE: (Hebrew)
I intend to postpone my trip abroad, at least the first part, and see how things develop after this check of the situation (in Ras al-Amud)
SUPER CAPTION: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
The Palestinian Authority has been showing initial restraint, apparently waiting for Netanyahu to make a move, but a senior Palestinian peace negotiator said Tuesday he expected Israel to throw out the settlers by the end of the day.
At stake are two buildings in east Jerusalem's Ras al-Amud neighbourhood which 11 settlers leased from Miami bingo king Irving Moskowitz, who also owns 3 and a half acres of land in the area.
In meetings with Moskowitz representatives, Netanyahu aides tried to work out a deal under which the settlers would leave voluntarily.
However, on Tuesday, two days after the settlers moved in, there were no signs that they were preparing to leave.
The settlers have put Netanyahu in an embarrassing situation.
If he orders them evacuated, he will lose the support of right-wing groups that make up the bulk of his constituency and risks the stability of his government.
However, if Netanyahu allows the settlers to stay he risks triggering Palestinian unrest.
He will also alienate U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright who - in her first visit to the Middle East last week - had urged him not to take unilateral actions that would anger the Palestinians.
In making his decision, Netanyahu awaited a ruling by Attorney General Eliyakim Rubinstein on whether he can expel the settlers by invoking national security.
Rubinstein toured the settler compound in Tuesday.
The Palestinian Minister of Jerusalem Affairs, Faisal Husseini, also came to the site.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I believe that we have to take care of this area, to be sure that this problem will be solved
SUPER CAPTION: Faisal Husseini, Palestinian Minister of Jerusalem Affairs
He was keen to show solidarity with both Israelis and Palestinians who are demonstrating against the settlers.
