Berlin Guards - 80 Years of German Army Tradition
One building in Berlin has seen the same ceremonies and military guard duties performed since 1931, from the Weimar Republic, through the war, communist East Germany and after German reunification. The Neue Wache or New Guardhouse is where Germany has honoured its war dead since 1931, and it has been guarded by German Army units from four successive political regimes for over 80 years.

A place of meditation and remembrance right in the middle of the busy city – the Neue Wache is the memorial for the victims of war and dictatorship. A mother embraces her dead son, helpless and turned to stone in silent pain: the statue Mother with her Dead Son by Käthe Kollwitz will touch you too. It stands in the Neue Wache, Germany's central memorial for the victims of war and tyranny.
The building on the boulevard Unter den Linden has always been a memorial. Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Prussia’s most important and famous architect, designed the building as a memorial to those who had fallen in the Napoleonic Wars and the Wars of Liberation. It was his first work in Berlin. At the same time, the building served as a guardhouse for the royal troops – and did so until the end of the monarchy in 1918.
The Neue Wache was built entirely in the Neoclassical style: a row of columns and a gable frieze with the goddess of victory decorated the sandstone-coloured building. However, only the frontage was real sandstone; in the notoriously cash-struck Prussia, the rear and side walls were merely painted in the same colour. In 1931 Heinrich Tessenow created a Memorial to the Victims of the Great War. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, the Neue Wache was hit by bombs and severely damaged.
From 1960, the GDR used the restored building as a Memorial to the Victims of Fascism and Militarism, with an eternal flame burning in the middle of the room. In 1969, the mortal remains of an unknown soldier and a nameless concentration camp victim were interred, surrounded by soil from Second World War battlefields and concentration camps. They still remain under the new memorial plaque today. Until 1990, every week there was a changing of the guard at the memorial, with soldiers marching up and down in goose step.
Since 1993 the Neue Wache has been the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Victims of War and Dictatorship. In the centre of the bare, simple, top-lit room is an enlarged replica of the statue Mother with her Dead Son by Käthe Kollwitz. Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s choice of Kollwitz’s Pietà gave rise to a lengthy and lively discussion on whether it was a suitable memorial to the actual victims of the Nazis.

Inside Neue Wache in Berlin, Germany
The Neue Wache (English: New Guardhouse) is a building in Berlin, now the capital of Germany, and formerly of the Kingdom of Prussia, and the DDR. It serves as the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Dictatorship. It is located on the north side of the Unter den Linden boulevard in the central Mitte district. Dating from 1816, the Neue Wache was designed by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and is a leading example of German Neoclassical architecture. Originally built as a guardhouse for the troops of the crown prince of Prussia, the building has been used as a war memorial since 1931.

The Unter den Linden was located within the Soviet zone of occupation of Berlin, and after 1949 was part of the communist German Democratic Republic. In 1960 the repaired Neue Wache was reopened as a Memorial to the Victims of Fascism and Militarism. In 1969, the 20th anniversary of the GDR, a glass prism structure with an eternal flame was placed in center of the hall. The remains of the unknown soldier and of an unknown concentration camp victim from World War II were enshrined in the building.
After German reunification, the Neue Wache was again rededicated in 1993, as the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Tyranny. The GDR memorial piece was removed and replaced by an enlarged version of Käthe Kollwitz's sculpture Mother with her Dead Son. This sculpture is directly under the oculus, and so is exposed to the rain, snow and cold of the Berlin climate, symbolising the suffering of civilians during World War II.

Neue Wache Berlin 1993 - Performance Denken statt Gedenken
Am 14. November 1993 wurde in Berlin Unter den Linden die Neue Wache als Gedenkstätte wiedereröffnet.
Der Landesverband Bü90/DieGrünen veranstaltete am Tag davor eine Protestveranstaltung mit dem Aufruf Denken statt Gedenken.
Die Idee zu der Performance auf einer kleinen Bühne direkt an der Straße vor der Neuen Wache, stammte von Albert Eckert und Christoph Hofrichter, der auch Regie geführt hatte.
Die Soldaten der Reichswehr, der SS, der NVA und der Bundeswehr wurden von Mitgliedern des Landesverbands von Bü90/ Die Grünen Berlin dargestellt.
Die Protestveranstaltung fand in der Presse nachhaltige Resonanz.
Da die Veranstaltung irrtümlich nicht als Kultur sondern als Politisch angemeldet worden war, kam es zu Problemen mit der anwesenden Berliner Polizei, im Angesicht der uniformierten SS-Darsteller in Kostüm.
Der diensthabende Polizeihauptmann machte gegen den Regisseur eine Ausnahme, mit den Worten:
Herr Hofrichter, die SS darf aber nicht von der Bühne runter!.

DIE LETZTE WACHABLÖSUNG DER DDR 1990.
Die letzte Wachablösung der D D R 1990 (THE LAST OF THE GDR guard 1990th) Leider bin ich aus Gründen meiner Tätigkeit erst beim Abzug der Soldaten angekommen.Es ist aber noch genug zu sehen Wo man 1987 noch mit dem STECHSCHRITTmarschierte , marschiert. man jetzt normalpro-westlich. Das NVA-Wachregiment Friedrich Engels (WR-1) erfüllte rein repräsentative Funktionen in Berlin, wie die bei Touristen beliebte Ehrenwache an der Neuen Wache, Unter den Linden, dem damaligen Denkmal für die Opfer des Faschismus und Militarismus. Zeitweise stand auch eine Ehrenwache vor dem Gebäude des Staatsrates. Weitere Höhepunkte waren jeweils die Ehrenkompanie bei Staatsbesuchen und der Große Zapfenstreich, traditionell zum Republikgeburtstag am Vorabend des 7. Oktober aufgeführt.Außerdem wurden Minesterien und eine (getarnte)Militärdruckerei bewacht im 24 h Wechsel. Die Unterkunft des Wachregiments befand sich ursprünglich in der Nähe des Bahnhofes riedrichstraße, Berlin-Mitte, Am Kupfergraben.1968/69 in Berlin-Grünau. Wenige Wochen vor dem 03.10.1990 war das Wachregiment in das Objekt Treptow verlegt worden( ehemalige Kaserne der zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits aufgelösten Grenztruppen der ehemaligen DDR, gelegen an der Straße Am Treptower Park zwischen Bouchestraße und Elsenstraße ). Der vom Wachregiment gepflegte typische Exerzierschritt geht auf den preußischen Stechschritt zurück. Die Ausführung war den Soldaten des Wachregimentes einige Monate vor dem Tag der Wiedervereinigung unter Minister Eppelmann ausdrücklich verboten worden, weil er unerwünscht an die ehemaligen Wehrmacht erinnerte. Das Wachregiment Friedrich Engels hatte nach dem 03.10.1990 keinerlei repräsentative Aufgaben mehr. Der Auftrag, diverse Objekte zu bewachen, blieb zunächst bestehen. Die Zukunft des Regimentes und der in die Bundeswehr einzugliedernden Soldaten war im 4. Quartal 1990 völlig unklar. Ein sogenanntes Ausbilderteam, bestehend aus einem Hauptmann und zwei Stabsfeldwebeln ( gestellt durch das in Wesel stationierte Weseler Raketenartilleriebataillon 150 ) versuchte in dieser Zeit nach Kräften, zu dritt hunderten von ehemaligen NVA-Soldaten den Wechsel in die Bundeswehr zu erleichtern. noch mehr zur neuen Wache :
