Neveh Shalom Synagogue Suriname
The Neveh Shalom Synagogue (Hebrew: בית הכנסת נווה שלום) is the only synagogue of the Ashkenazi community in Suriname.
The lot on Keizerstraat 82 was acquired in 1716 by Sephardi Jews. The original building was completed in 1723 and replaced the first Surinamese synagogue in the Jodensavanne, originally built of wood between 1665-1671 (but already rebuilt with bricks). The synagogue was sold to the Ashkenazim in 1735, and the Sephardim formed a separate community known as Tzedek ve-Shalom. The two communities have since merged, and hold services in alternating buildings and alternating rites.
The current synagogue on the Keizerstraat 82 lot, designed by architect J.F. Halfhide, was completed in 1842 or 1843.

Jodensavanne
Een van de vele tours die wordt georganiseerd door “Tours with Flair” is een bezoek aan Jodensavanne. Het is een voormalige vestiging van Sefardische Joden in Suriname. Een synagoge en twee begraafplaatsen in de directe omgeving zijn de belangrijkste monumentale plekken op Jodensavanne.
LIGGING
Jodensavanne ligt aan de rechteroever van de Surinamerivier op ongeveer 50 kilometer ten zuiden van Paramaribo in het district Para. Het plaatsje Jodensavanne was gebouwd op een heuvel. De huizen waren gebouwd rond de synagoge 'Beracha Ve Salom' ( Zegen en Vrede ).
GESCHIEDENIS
Uit diverse bronnen blijkt dat reeds in 1639 de eerste groep Joden zich in Suriname vestigde. Zij waren afkomstig uit Nederland, Portugal en Italië. Deze eerste Joodse kolonisten woonden in de toenmalige hoofdstad van Suriname, Thorarica, gelegen aan de linker oever van de Surinamerivier, ongeveer veertig kilometer ten zuiden van Paramaribo. Zij begonnen met de aanleg van een aantal suiker plantages. In 1652 kwam samen met de Engelsman lord Willoughby een nieuwe groep Engelse Joden naar Suriname en vestigde zich op de Savanne, gelegen nabij de Cassiporakreek. Deze plaats is nu bekend onder de naam “Jodensavanne. In 1664 arriveerde een derde groep Joden in Suriname toen de Nederlandse kolonie Cayenne door de Fransen in bezit werd genomen. Deze groep onder leiding van David Nassy week uit naar Suriname en sloot zich aan bij de anderen op Jodensavanne. Op 17 augustus 1665 werden door het Engelse koloniale gouvernement belangrijke privileges aan de Joodse bevolkingsgroep verleend waaronder vrije uitoefening van hun godsdienst, een eigen schutterij en toestemming tot het bouwen van kerken en scholen. Deze maatregel was een verademing voor deze bevolkingsgroep die elders in de wereld om haar geloofsovertuiging werd vervolgd. Er werd direct begonnen met het bouwen van enkele scholen en een houten synagoge te Cassipora. In 1671 werd deze synagoge ingewijd door de Joodse Burgerwacht Compagnie. Toen Abraham Crijnssen in 1667 Suriname veroverde voor de Nederlandse provincie Zeeland zag het er even naar uit alsof de rust van de bewoners van Jodensavanne weer verstoord zou worden. Maar deze Zeeuwse commandeur liet de privileges van de Joodse gemeenschap onaangetast.
JODENSAVANNE OPGEKNAPT
In februari 1999 is het hele gebied opgeknapt. Er werd een nieuwe aanlegplaats aangelegd én een bescheiden bezoekerscentrum opgericht. Sindsdien kan Jodensavanne de bezoekers weer ontvangen en informeren over een van de oudste joodse vestigingen in de Nieuwe Wereld.
