Hub on Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach
The seaside city of New Smyrna Beach, Florida (pop 23,000) is an eclectic meld of thoughtful progress, old-fashioned charm, traditional values and an entrepreneurial spirit that is reflected in its diverse population of families, retirees, small business owners, surfers, snowbirds and artists. Attracting and supporting artists has been a mainstay of the City for nearly a century.
The Hub on Canal began with a desire for a centrally-located cultural gathering spot that might bring these different groups together with art and artists at the core. Dovetailing with that purpose was the growing need for local artists to have a place to work and sell their art. These intersecting goals coalesced and resulted in two years of planning that included a feasibility study; input from public, private and government entities; a business plan; and financial investment from a cross-section of the population.
In 2010, the perfect location was secured – 132 Canal Street in downtown New Smyrna Beach. Originally built as The Palace Theater, a movie theater and gathering place in its heyday in the 1930s, the building changed hands many times over the next 80 years. In the 1990s, Harold and Mona Brewer purchased and revitalized it to its current stunning state with the help of local architect Kevin Schweizer. Its urban style and metropolitan feel is distinct and melds seamlessly into the small town charm of New Smyrna Beach’s Historic Downtown Canal Street.
The guiding force behind The Hub’s founding was Sally Mackay, former mayor of New Smyrna Beach (2007-2009) along with co-founders, Susan Stern and Susan Ellis. Nancy Barclay and Attorney Bill Preston provided much needed advice and assistance. Artist Beau Wild caught the fire early on, as well, and her input has been invaluable.
Essential to The Hub’s development were the artists who, after expressing initial enthusiasm that confirmed their interest and locked in their studio space. This support was crucial to ensure The Hub’s debut, as well as its long-term success.
An equally vital component to The Hub’s ability to launch was the support and financial investment of the City of New Smyrna Beach and the County of Volusia through the Community Redevelopment Association (CRA) funds. The CRA’s lease assistance program, a funding module that had yet to be activated, provided the security that would support The Hub in its monthly lease payments of $10,000. The CRA approved a one-year grant of $50,000, with the opportunity to reapply for two more years, if necessary. This seed money gives The Hub the time it needs to increase membership, build sponsorships, grow programs and audiences, and demonstrate its value to the community.
The Hub filed for status as a nonprofit charitable organization (501c3) in March 2012. It officially opened on March 1, 2012. Over 65 artists are represented. All 26 studio spaces are occupied by artists representing a multitude of mediums, from painters to ceramic artists, videographers to jewelers, fiber artists to sculptors, as well as a few non-visual artists – a writer, an architect, and a musician. Wall space also contributes to the overall vibrancy.
Programs in art, music, crafts, the humanities, yoga/movement, dance, are ongoing. Plans include many more classes in all areas (see What’s Happening!)
The Hub’s logo, Art•Creating•Community, reflects its mission to create community and business opportunities in the downtown historic district.

I was lucky enough to visit my version of beer heaven. I took a trip to Boston for an arcade tournament and figured I'd go see my favorite brewery. Luckily, I was able to come in before they opened and film some footage. Leo and I had a great time! Take a look at my trip and let me know what you think.
A huge thanks to Leo for driving me out there!!!
This was my first attempt at something like this. It's decent, and I hope to do more in the future.
