The Tyne and Wear Metro, referred to locally as simply the Metro, is a rapid transit and light rail system in North East England, serving Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Sunderland in the Tyne and Wear region. It has been described as the first modern light rail system in the United Kingdom.
The initial network opened between 1980 and 1984, using converted former railway lines, linked with new tunnel infrastructure. Extensions to the original network were opened in 1991 and 2002. In 2016/17 nearly 38 million passenger journeys were made on the network, which spans 77.5 kilometres (48.2 mi) and has two lines with a total of 60 stations, nine of which are underground. It is the second-largest of the four metro systems in the United Kingdom, after the London Underground; the others being the Docklands Light Railway and the Glasgow Subway.
The system is owned and operated by the local transport authority Nexus. Between 2010 and 2017 it was operated under contract by DB Regio Tyne & Wear Limited, a subsidiary of Arriva UK Trains. On 1 April 2017, this contract ended, and Nexus took over direct operation of the system for a planned period of two years.

Since the inception of the Tyne and Wear Metro, its rolling stock has remained the same. Its passenger fleet comprises a total of 90 two-car articulated units, known as 'Metrocars', which are numbered 4001–4090: these can operate singly, or in sets of 3 or 4 during empty stock movements, but are normally coupled together in pairs in service and have a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). The first units to be built were two prototypes, numbered 4001 and 4002, which were delivered for testing in 1975; after modifications they joined the regular fleet in service in 1987. These were followed by 88 production units which were built between 1978 and 1981. The design of the Metrocars was based on the Stadtbahnwagen B, a German light rail vehicle developed in the early 1970s; however they were built in Britain by Metro Cammell at their factory in Birmingham.
The fleet has been refurbished several times, and several liveries have been used. The original livery used at opening was cadmium yellow and white, in accordance with Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive colours. A mid-life refurbishment of the fleet, carried out in-house, took place between 1995 and 2000, and a new livery was adopted consisting of red, green or blue bodies, with yellow front and rear ends and triangles containing the Metro M logo on the doors. Another full refurbishment of the fleet took place between 2010 and 2015: known as the 'three-quarter-life' refurbishment, the Metrocars were refurbished by Wabtec Rail at its Doncaster facility, with the main goal being to extend their service life until 2025. Each car was stripped down to its frame and built back up again, with the addition of improved disabled access, new door control systems, and renewed interiors, seating and lighting. It opened in 1980 and in 2007–2008 provided 40 million public journeys on its network of 74.5 kilometres (46.3 mi). It is the second largest of the three metro systems in the United Kingdom, after the London Underground; the other being Glasgow Subway. It is operated by DB Regio Tyne & Wear Limited, a subsidiary of Arriva UK Trains under contract to Nexus.

Castle Keep, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK - 29th November 2012
The Castle is a medieval fortification in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, which gave the City of Newcastle its name. The most prominent remaining structures on the site are the Castle Keep, the castle's main fortified stone tower, and the Black Gate, its fortified gatehouse.
Use of the site for defensive purposes dates from Roman times, when it housed a fort and settlement called Pons Aelius, guarding a bridge over the River Tyne. In 1080, a wooden motte and bailey style castle was built on the site of the Roman fort, which was the 'New Castle upon Tyne'. It was built by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William I (William the Conqueror), having returned south from a campaign against Malcolm III of Scotland. The stone Castle Keep was built between 1172 and 1177 by Henry II on the site of Curthose's castle. The Black Gate was added between 1247 and 1250 by Henry III.
The site is in the centre of Newcastle, and lies to the east of Newcastle Central Station. The 75 feet (23 m) gap between the Keep and the Gatehouse is almost entirely filled by a railway viaduct, carrying the East Coast Main Line from Newcastle to Scotland. The Castle Keep and Black Gate pre-dated the construction of the Newcastle town wall, construction of which started sometime around 1265, and did not form part of it. Nothing remains of the Roman fort or the original motte and bailey castle. The Keep is a Grade I listed building, and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The Keep is owned by the City Council, which leases it to the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne, who manage it as a visitor attraction. The society is based in the Black Gate, and use it to house a library and as a meeting place.
This video begins with external views of the Keep, before going inside for views of the rooms, displays and internal architecture. There are then rooftop views of the castle keep structure, and views over the City of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Gateshead. This includes Newcastle Central Station, Newcastle Cathedral, St. James's Park, The Tyne Bridge, The River Tyne, Sage Centre, The High Level Bridge, The Swing Bridge, The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Baltic Flour Mills, Grey's Monument.
