Newfoundland Chocolate Company
Brent Smith, Chief Chocolate Officer, Newfoundland Chocolate Company:
The Newfoundland Chocolate Company started in 2008 in the basement of my wife and my home here in St. John’s Newfoundland.
So it was really just me and then we added on our second employee and then shortly into the 2009 now we have 73 employees.
You can find Newfoundland Chocolates right across the country and of course our Web presence our online store is worldwide and we do see chocolate…we send chocolate to every corner of the globe.
People are looking for local, they’re looking for smaller amounts of higher quality items.
It's local, it's premium, it's quality and it's proud. Proud Atlantic Canada, proud Newfoundland brand.
Part of the challenge of growing and scaling an artisan crafted chocolate operation as we have is how do you increase your efficiency without losing your soul, which for us is the artisan aspect, it’s the quality, it’s the beauty of the chocolates.
And so we found a machine called Hacos, which is a shelling machine. So it takes out that repetitive, redundant chocolatier task that really doesn’t have an artisan value to it and allow the chocolatiers to focus on the art.
Growth would not have been possible without that change in process.
With ACOA help we were able to innovate, we were able to bring in the new system of crafting chocolate that allowed us to expand to those other markets
Tips I’d give to an Atlantic Canadian business looking to export, number one is do the market research.
Just because you’ve got a firecracker product in your market doesn’t mean it’s necessarily going to play in the other market.
It might, but it might take some tweaks, it might take some different marketing initiatives to bring that brand to consciousness.
We want to grow, we want to proudly build this brand into everything that it can be…but being smart and deliberate and business-minded along the way.
The future for the Newfoundland Chocolate Company I think is…it looks very sweet indeed.
Newfoundland Chocolate Company Picnic on Signal Hill, St. John's, NL
Picnics conjure up visions of fields, food and smiles.
Newfoundland Chocolate Café’s new Picnic offering on Signal Hill, in collaboration with Parks Canada, delivers that and more.
The café is located in the Signal Hill Visitors’ Centre and is the pick-up point for your picnic. Here is what our day looked like. Insert Video
We ordered our picnic in advance on the website (at least one day prior). The café is petite and busy with hikers and visitors to the centre. As your selections are prepared in advance, you can pick up and go quickly allowing you a more leisurely time on the trail. Your picnic bundle includes: a choice of sandwich, a side of kettle cooked chips, two sweets and a choice of beverage, all prepped and boxed into a drawstring bag which is yours to keep. A waterproof blanket is provided, so you don’t need to bring any items to ensure you have a great picnic.
Your ‘goodie bag’ includes youth and adult maps of the trails around Signal Hill to help find the perfect spot to enjoy lunch. After taking in the scenery and enjoying the delectable and filling lunch, you can take your time getting back to the café because there is no time restriction on returning the blanket.
And to thank you for returning the blanket for future picnickers, you are treated to either hot chocolate or your choice from a selection of gelato flavours to finish off the outing!
This picnic is a wonderful option for lunch in St. John’s: a delicious meal in a beautiful National Park, at a great price — with none of the preparation.

Perfectly Tempered Chocolates That Will Melt in Your Mouth | Newfoundland Chocolate Company
Established in 2008, the Newfoundland Chocolate Company came into existence by Brent Smith and Christina Dove's mutual love for crafting with their hands and making premium world class chocolates.
Before Tonya Barron discovered the Newfoundland Chocolate Company, she admits that she never like chocolate. However, these are different from lower quality chocolates. Using perfectly tempered chocolate and wholesome Newfoundland ingredients, this company produces chocolates that beautifully melts in your mouth and doesn't leave an unpleasant film when you taste it like other similar products do.
Artisan crafted chocolate made in Newfoundland. Loved everywhere.

If you’re looking to create that farm-to-table experience in your own home, the St. John’s Farmers Market is the place to go.
Fresh produce, local honey, delicious snacks, and more were available at the market’s opening day.
Shoppers got the chance to peruse the wide variety of vendors that have kept the market open now into its seventh year.
“I like it a lot,” said Anthony Urso, a first-time shopper at the market. “I bought some fruit, sampled some coffee. It was all very good, very fresh, so I’ll definitely want to come back.”
While the vendors keep the full profits of what they sell, St. John’s does give their proceeds to local charities.
“The money that we raise is paid to us by the vendors for rent on their space,” said Bob Turner, a greeter at the market. “We’ve rented out all the spaces for the year. And we take that money and it goes to our outreach board and then we go through a list of charities, generally Christian-based to some degree, and we disburse that money to those charities.”
Stop by any Wednesday between 3 and 7 p.m., weather permitting. You might even get a free sample of some of their delicious offerings!
If you can’t make it out to St. John’s on a Wednesday, Naperville’s two other farmers markets open soon. The 95th Street Market runs on Thursdays and the 5th Avenue Market is open on Saturdays.
