Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase – Terry Woodall
Oregon Coast Council for the Arts welcomed North Bend visual artist Terry Woodall in a wood sculpture exhibit in April 2013, in the Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase, at the Newport Visual Arts Center in Newport, Oregon.
Woodall has achieved international recognition and awards with his interpretive sculptures of wildlife interactions executed in both wood and bronze. He has used his wood sculpture exhibits as a springboard to express his devotion to North American wildlife.

US Route 20 comes to Gordon, NE
From 1989 to 1995, artists Jan Albers and Karen Titus took photographs and interviewed people they encountered along U.S. Route 20, the longest transcontinental highway in the United States. Reaching 3,365 miles from coast to coast, it begins in Boston, Massachusetts, and continues through 12 states, ending at the Pacific Ocean in Newport, Oregon. During their journey, Albers and Titus (who are also mother and daughter) documented sites, events, and stories of people who live and work along this road. Photographs from the road by Albers and Titus will be on view in the exhibition 20/20 Vision: Travels Along America's Accidental Highway at the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany, Indiana, June 3 - July 16, 2011.
In 1990, Jan Albers interviewed Caroline Santoz Pfiffer, who lived on a back road off of U.S. Route 20 outside of Gordon, Nebraska. Jan Albers had to nudge cows off of the road to get to Pfiffer's home. The downstairs of her home was a museum to Pfiffer's sister, Mari Santoz (1896-1966) who left the area for New York and became a well-known writer. Pfiffer was in her 80s at the time of the interview. She talked about the history of the area, the importance of the railroad and her memories of when U.S. Route 20 was built.

Thomas Linzey in Newport Or, 4/14/17
Join Oregon Coast Community College in welcoming Thomas Linzey, executive director of CELDF (Community Environmental Defense Fund) for Williams Lecture Series WHO DECIDES? ELEVATING PEOPLES' RIGHTS OVER CORPORATE RIGHTS at the Newport Performing Arts Center, Friday, April 14, 2017 at 6:30 pm.
CELDF, a non-profit, public interest law firm, has provided free support for Measure 21-177 to ban aerial pesticide spraying in Lincoln County. CELDF works nationally and internationally with local communities fighting corporate harm to people and ecosystems.
Thomas Linzey will inform, inspire and send you out the door knowing what is meant by Community Rights and knowing where the power comes from for people to join together and exert their Rights to say no to corporate insistence on placing Fracking wells, crude oil or natural gas pipelines through towns, or building Factory 'farms' with their sludge. This principle of Constitutional Right for safety is what animates ballot measure 21-177! Hear more about this important work. See you there! Free to the public. CELDF, a non-profit, public interest law firm, has provided free support for Measure 21-177 to ban aerial pesticide spraying in Lincoln County. CELDF works nationally and internationally with local communities fighting corporate harm to people and ecosystems. Thomas Linzey, executive director of CELDF, will speak in Newport’s Performing Arts Center on Friday, April 14, 6:30 p.m.
Measure 21-177 would secure the right of residents and visitors to be free from aerial pesticide spraying (from an aircraft). Aerial spraying has been banned on federal forestland in Oregon for over 30 years since federal courts found that safety of the chemicals has never been proved. Measure 21-177 would extend that protection to Lincoln County.
Kai Huschke, Northwest Organizer for CELDF, says, “Measure 21-177 confronts corporate-devised, preemptive laws that block Lincoln County people from protecting their health, safety, and tourist economy.”
Measure 21-177 in Lincoln County follows a similar effort in Josephine County and a current effort in Lane County for a similar ballot measure in May 2018. Interest is also building in Curry and Yamhill counties.
The city of Depoe Bay has requested the state to halt the spraying of eight pesticides adjacent to the city water supply until the state provides valid, peer-reviewed studies of the effects of the eight products in combination with each other and in total. The City of Yachats has also been vocal in supporting Measure 21-177. The Coalition of Defeat speaks for none of these.

Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase – Dennis Worrel
Dennis Worrel, a Tillamook artist, exhibited a collection of landscapes titled “Landscapes: On the Wet Side, in December 2012 in the Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase, at the Newport Visual Arts Center in Newport, Oregon.
“These landscape paintings are of western Oregon, primarily the Oregon Coast Range. They are works on paper started outdoors and finished in the studio using mixed media including acrylic ink, fluid acrylic paint, graphite, and watercolor pencil,” Worrel described. “They were completed in the late summer and fall of 2012. As an artist, I am attracted and challenged by the area’s complexity of light, color, and texture, which can change dramatically over the day, and the ‘closeness’ of space. I am interested in our perceptions of nature and the places we reside.”
Worrel grew up in a small rural town in northern California during the late 1950s and early 1960s where his exposure to cultural institutions was limited, but “I was lucky to grow up when schools had budgets for art programs,” he recalls.
“My high school art teacher, Robert Potier, had recently graduated from the Chicago Art Institute. He really inspired me and helped me pursue the possibility of becoming an artist.
“I recall being attracted to artists who explored color, especially the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. During this time I also remember discovering early works of the San Francisco Bay Area Funk Art Movement and being fascinated by their energy, self-parody, and play,” he concluded.
He attended Humboldt State University in the late ’60s and early ’70s, during a time of dramatic social change. He majored in earth sciences but also took several drawing and painting classes. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in science, he worked for the federal government as a soil scientist, mapping soils in remote areas of several western states.
In 1985, he moved from Elko, Nevada to San Francisco and began taking art classes. A summer class took him to China to study flower and animal painting at the Guangzhou Fine Art Institute, at a time when there were few western visitors. He continued to paint while working with local firms during the next nine years in the San Francisco Bay area.
Worrel holds a master’s degree in fine art from San Francisco Art Institute and recently showed at Portland’s Gallery 114. He’s won several art awards and was a member of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artists Gallery for over 10 years. His work is in many private and corporate collections in California and Oregon.
In 1998, he and his wife moved to Tillamook on the Oregon coast. Here, until 2011, he worked as a soil scientist and hydrologist. He now devotes all his time to his art.
