Koya-San (Japan) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Koya-San in Japan.
The secluded plateau of Koya-San is situated at an altitude of around nine hundred metres on the Japanese peninsula of Kii. This monastery mountain is one of the most important and oldest pilgrimage sites in Japan. In 816 A.D., Kobo Daishi, founder of the Shingon School, had the first monastery built, which was subsequently followed by a hundred and twenty four temple buildings. The Danjo Garan Complex is rated as one of the first sites and encompasses twenty temples and buildings. Symbolically, a red glowing pagoda stands in the centre of a mandala in the form of a lotus. The temple buildings are situated within dense forests and represent the heyday of ninth century Japanese Buddhism. The Okunoin Cemetery is considered to be the holiest location on Koya-San. Containing around twenty thousand graves, the largest cemetery in Japan extends within a mystical forest of ancient cedar trees, a ‘whispering forest’ that contains ancestral spirits. Buddha statues line the path that leads to the Kobo-Daishi Mausoleum. Tiny figures with red bibs around their necks are believed to protect the young. In front of the last bridge to the holiest district, a series of Buddha statues is ready to accept offerings and worship. In the Hall Of Lamps, lights burn continuously as they have allegedly done for nine hundred years.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

Elsewhere in Nikko is Rinnoji, a temple group founded in the 8th century that’s home to 8m-high gold-plated wooden images of Buddha. The 3 figures represent the nearby sacred mountains Nantai, Nyoho and Taro. Also dedicated to the mountain gods is the Futarasan Shrine, accessed by the picturesque Shinkyo (Sacred Bridge). Taiyuin Temple was built in 1653 to hold the tomb of Iemitsu, the third Tokugawa shogun. The surrounding Nikko National Park is known for its waterfalls, cedar forest, hiking trails and colorful autumn leaves. The park also encompasses Chuzenji, a lake resort with boating and onsen (hot springs) facilities.

Japan - Kyoto:
Kyoto is a city in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital of Kyoto Prefecture, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. With temples, parks, bustling business districts, markets, from regal estates to the tightly-packed neighborhoods, Kyoto is one of the oldest and most famous Asian metropolises.
CultureAlthough ravaged by wars, fires, and earthquakes during its eleven centuries as the imperial capital, Kyoto was spared from much of the destruction of World War II. It was removed from the atomic bomb target list (which it had headed) by the personal intervention of Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, as Stimson wanted to save this cultural center which he knew from his honeymoon and later diplomatic visits. With its 2000 religious places- 1600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, as well as palaces, gardens and architecture intact, it is one of the best preserved cities in Japan. Among the most famous temples in Japan are Kiyomizu-dera, a magnificent wooden temple supported by pillars off the slope of a mountain; Kinkaku-ji, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion; Ginkaku-ji, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion; and Ryōan-ji, famous for its rock garden. The Heian Jingū is a Shinto shrine, built in 1895, celebrating the Imperial family and commemorating the first and last emperors to reside in Kyoto. Three special sites have connections to the imperial family: the Kyoto Gyoen area including the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Sento Imperial Palace, homes of the Emperors of Japan for many centuries; Katsura Imperial Villa, one of the nation's finest architectural treasures; and Shugaku-in Imperial Villa, one of its best Japanese gardens. In addition, the temple of Sennyu-ji houses the tombs of the emperors from Shijō to Kōmei.Other sites in Kyoto include Arashiyama, the Gion and Pontochō geisha quarters, the Philosopher's Walk, and the canals which line some of the older streets. The Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto are listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. These include the Kamo Shrines (Kami and Shimo), Kyō-ō-Gokokuji (Tō-ji), Kiyomizu-dera, Daigo-ji, Ninna-ji, Saihō-ji (Kokedera), Tenryū-ji, Rokuon-ji (Kinkaku-ji), Jishō-ji (Ginkaku-ji), Ryōan-ji, Hongan-ji, Kōzan-ji and the Nijō Castle, primarily built by the Tokugawa shoguns. Other sites outside the city are also on the list.Kyoto is renowned for its abundance of delicious Japanese foods and cuisine. The special circumstances of Kyoto as a city away from the sea and home to many Buddhist temples resulted in the development of a variety of vegetables peculiar to the Kyoto area (kyōyasai, 京野菜).Japan's television and film industry has its center in Kyoto. Many jidaigeki, action films featuring samurai, were shot at Toei Uzumasa Eigamura.A film set and theme park in one, Eigamura features replicas of traditional Japanese buildings which are used for jidaigeki. Among the sets are a replica of the old Nihonbashi (the bridge at the entry to Edo), a traditional courthouse, a Meiji Period police box and part of the former Yoshiwara red-light district. Actual film shooting takes place occasionally, and visitors are welcome to observe the action. The dialect spoken in Kyoto is known as Kyō-kotoba or Kyōto-ben, a constituent dialect of the Kansai dialect. When Kyoto was the capital of Japan, Kyoto dialect was the de facto standard Japanese and influenced on development of Tokyo dialect, the modern standard Japanese. Famous Kyoto expressions are a polite copula dosu, a honorific verb ending -haru and etc.Kyoto International Manga Museum is also situated in Kyoto. For an entrance fee visitors are able to view exhibitions and read as much manga as they desire. The museum is making an attempt to acquire every manga ever published and so far houses approximately 200,000 titles.

Kullen Mountain and falls was absolutely beautiful and MUCH more impressive than I thought it would be. Glad my drone didn't crash too.

日向薬師の彼岸花(神奈川県 ・伊勢原市)ヒガンバナ群落地 Lycoris radiata (red spider lily) in Hinata
Lycoris radiata (red spider lily)
rural scenes around Hinata Yakushi Temple
This is lycoris radiata belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family of plants and is sometimes known as the red spider lily.
Originally from China, it was introduced into Japan and from there to the United States and elsewhere.
In Japan the lycoris radiata signals the arrival of fall. Many Buddhist will use it to celebrate the arrival of fall with a ceremony at the tomb of one of their ancestors. They plant them on graves because it shows a tribute to the dead.
Lycoris radiata flowers in synchrony with the ripening of rice, making a wonderful display. Earthen berms around rice patties are the most common habitat for this species in Japan.
This place is the Hinata rural area in Isehara, Kanagawa, Japan.

Japan Travel: Nyoirinji Temple fall foliage & cherry blossom Mt. Yoshino, Nara32
Japan Travel: Nyoirinji Temple fall foliage & cherry blossom Mt. Yoshino, Nara32
Nyoirinji Temple was originally established in the 10th century, a quiet, medium sized temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism.
Unlike Yoshino's other sites on the mountain slope opposite the town, Nyoirinji was where Emperor Go-Daigo worshipped. He established the court in Yoshino (Southern Court) in rivalry with the court in Kyoto (Northern Court).
Emperor Go-Daigo later died in Yoshino and the hill behind the temple holds the tomb of the emperor. In the precinct, there are mausoleum housing a wooden figure allegedly made by the emperor himself. There are also other buildings including a tahoto style pagoda and a treasure house in the grounds of Nyoirinji. The treasure house displays mandala, religious objects and artifacts from the Emperor Go-Daigo's court. Also on display are several paintings depicting scenes of Kusunoki Masatsura, Go-Daigo's loyal retainer, making a final prayer at Nyoirinji before departure to defend the emperor from the rivaling Northern Court forces and finally died. The door on which Kusunoki and other defenders inscribed their names and a poem is displayed in the treasure house.

Toyokuni Shrine, dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi!
Dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Toyokuni Shrine is popularly and affectionately known as Hokoku-san.
After his death in 1598 at the age of 63, Hideyoshi's body was interred in accordance with his wishes halfway up Amidagamine, a mountain located east of Kyoto, and a magnificent mausoleum and shrine was built, its base (present day Hokokubyo Taikodaira). The emperor Goyozei granted the shrine rank of Shoichii and bestowed upon its god the name Toyokuni Daimyojin, and the shrine held a particular magnificent festival to mark the seventh anniversery of Hideyoshi's death in August 1604. These events are recorded in some detail on a painted folding screen called the Hokuni Rinjisairezu Byobu, an important Cultural Asset.
