Bikini Barista Dies Following Inferno at Washington Coffee Stand
Courtney Campbell, the 25-year-old owner of Saints and Sinners in Everett, managed to escape the Thursday night inferno that reduced the espresso kiosk to charred remnants, but the flames had burned more than 80% of her body, KING-TV reported. The fire's cause has not been determined, but investigators believe a propane tank contributed to the flourishing flames during the 5 p.m. blaze, climbing higher as commuters drove by while taking photos and video.

'Barefoot Bandit' Pleads Guilty to Burglary
Colton Harris-Moore pleaded guilty to a burglary charge for stealing an airplane in 2010. Moore, known as the Barefoot Bandit, is already in prison after pleading guilty to dozens of felony charges. (May 9)
Washington coffee stand explosion: bikini barista dies of injuries from explosion - TomoNews
EVERETT, WASHINGTON — A 26-year-old bikini barista died this week following an explosion and fire at her Washington coffee stand last Thursday.
Citing fire investigators, ABC-affiliate KOMO 4 reports that mother-of-two Courtney Campbell had no chance to escape once flames engulfed the kiosk.
The business, known as Sinners and Saints, is located inside a Shell gas station on on Everett Mall Way and Fourth Avenue West in Everett. Campbell was its owner.
Firefighters said a propane tank stored inside the stand contributed to the fire, the Seattle Times reported. The fire also spread to a nearby vehicle.
Campbell died on Monday at Harborview Medical Center, Q13 Fox News reported. Her death has been ruled as an accident by the King County medical examiner. She is survived by her two young daughters, aged 3 and 8.

Fisherman Caught on Video Jumping into Water to Avoid Crash
A salmon fisherman who abandoned ship by leaping into the frigid waters of the Columbia River last summer -- an instant before another motorboat crashed into his -- has filed a $372,500 lawsuit against the other driver.
Clatsop County sheriff’s deputies accused boat driver Marlin Lee Larsen of several crimes after the 75-year-old told investigators he couldn’t see where he was driving because he was sitting down and the dash of his boat was blocking his view. Larsen said he probably should have been standing, according to the sheriff’s report, which notes Larsen uses a motorized scooter to get around on land.
Larsen’s son-in-law, who also was on the boat, told investigators that he had warned his father-in-law to pay attention, that he sometimes sees his father-in-law using his cell phone while driving the boat and that his father-in-law had been off-and-on his cell phone the morning of the crash, according to the sheriff’s report.
Although Oregon law heavily restricts cell phone use while driving, there are no such specific laws governing boating. But it is against the law to operate a boat without due care.
The lawsuit, filed earlier this month, claims Larsen was boating while distracted by his cell phone on the morning of the Aug. 12, 2017, when the crash occurred near the mouth of the Columbia at the Pacific Ocean, just east of Fort Stevens State Park.
The suit was filed by Bryan Maess, 47, an off-duty Hermiston police officer fishing with a law-enforcement co-worker, Christopher McMahon, 46. Another friend, Roni Durham, 57, a Clatskanie resident, also was aboard.
A GoPro camera mounted to the Weldcraft fishing boat captured the frantic seconds as Larsen’s Bayliner Trophy motorboat speeds directly at them. McMahon can be seen waving his arms and yelling in an attempt to get Larsen to steer clear -- just before the trio jump into the water.
The video was shared with The Oregonian/OregonLive by the publication Salmon Trout Steelheader and Angling Oregon, the latter of which is an online fishing website of McMahon's. The video encourages boaters to wear life jackets. Maess and McMahon weren't wearing life jackets. Durham was, but it didn't inflate.
Sheriff’s investigators wrote that it was likely Maess and the others would have been seriously injured or killed if they hadn’t jumped into the water.
Maess suffered vision problems, headaches and injuries to his ankle, leg and arm from jumping into the water or being struck by debris, according to the suit. Five months after the crash, he wears a knee brace, the suit says.
McMahon and Durham also suffered injuries, including cuts or hypothermia. They haven’t filed suit against Larsen but have hired attorneys who say they plan to. Portland attorney Josh Lamborn said his client, Durham, also has suffered psychological trauma and, even though fishing is a big part of her life, hasn’t been able to go back out on a boat since the crash.
Larsen, a Roseburg resident, told The Oregonian/OregonLive by phone Friday that he wasn’t using his cellphone while driving his Bayliner and referred to such allegations as “fake news.” Larsen also said a lawsuit seemed unnecessary because the people in the Weldcraft weren’t hurt badly.
The criminal case is ongoing. Larsen has pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor crimes of reckless operation of a boat, fourth-degree assault and recklessly endangering the lives of others.
The suit was filed in Clatsop County Circuit Court. Portland attorney James McCandlish is representing Maess.
Bus Drives Off Bridge After Fight Between Driver and Passenger in China
A bus crashed off a bridge in southwestern China, and police say a fight between the driver and a passenger is to blame. Surveillance video recovered from the wreckage shows the altercation, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. It crossed traffic, struck another car, and plummeted from the bridge into the river below. Police have recovered 13 bodies, and two people remain missing.

Rats aren't only a part of New York City’s underground — they're an inseparable part of its pop culture. There’s Master Splinter from the Ninja Turtles, Pizza Rat, and even Cannibal Rat. But for every celebrity rat, there’s another 250,000 to 2 million anonymous rodents living in the city — and the city health department is fighting to bring down.
The battle can be deadly. Last year, three people in a Bronx city block contracted leptospirosis through rat urine. Only two survived.
To combat the problem, Mayor Bill de Blasio launched a $32 million initiative to rid New York of its signature rodents, concentrating on hyper-infested areas that the city describes as rat reservoirs.
Multiple city agencies are currently focusing their efforts around public housing buildings, where they plan to replace dirt basement floors, block passageways and amp up trapping, baiting and poisoning efforts.They also apply dry ice to the rats’ burrow systems, effectively suffocating them as the carbon dioxide gets released while the ice melts.
But if all else fails, a small group of dedicated rat hunters are ready to step in.
When dusk settles, Richard Reynolds and his vigilante rat hunters known as “The Ryders Alley Trencher-Fed Society” — or R.A.T.S for short — roam lower Manhattan’s streets and dumpsters, keeping their dogs’ instincts sharp and the hunting tradition alive.
In the three decades Richard has been hunting rats with his dogs, he says he must have killed thousands of rats. But he doesn’t really keep track.
A hunter through and through, he only counts the ones that get away.

Lightning Hits Helmet Of Motorcyclist In US
Michael LaDue suffers burns and damage to his hearing after a lightning bolt struck his motorcycle helmet in Washington state.A motorcyclist has had a miraculous escape after his helmet was struck by lightning as he drove along a main road during a thunderstorm.
Michael LaDue, 59, was driving on Interstate 5 through Chehalis in Washington State when he was struck.
He managed to pull over safely and another motorist drove him to a petrol station to call the emergency services.
Witnesses said Mr LaDue's helmet had been melted by the lightning strike, adding his hair had been singed and he suffered burns to his ears. Martin Zapalac told KOMO-TV the motorcyclist lit up when the lightning bolt hit him.
He said: All of a sudden it just lit up, the sky did.
And then literally it looked to me like it was hitting right on top of the helmet.
Captain Kevin Kurfman, of Chehalis Fire Department, said: His licence plate bracket says 'world's toughest motorcycle riders'.
I think that sounds very fitting for him right now.
Petrol station employee Brandi Abrego said his hair had been melted to the side of his head.
She added: He said he felt really, really hot and he grabbed my hand and he was really, really hot to the touch.
Mr LaDue was taken to the Providencia-Centralia Hospital suffering from burns and hearing loss.
Doctors transferred him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was later discharged.

Man admits to a TV crew that he set a house fire
ROCKVILLE, Md. - A man was arrested after confessing to a TV news crew that he set a house fire the station was covering.
The man identified himself as Carlos and said he wanted to bring attention to deplorable living conditions inside a Rockville home.
He said he had complained about the conditions to police but that they didn't take them seriously. So, he set the house on fire, and when news crews arrived on the scene, he told the photographer he set the fire to get news crews to the scene.
