Ninnaji Temple (仁和寺), Kyoto City, Japan
Ninnaji Temple (仁和寺) is located in the northwestern part of Kyoto City in Japan.
Ninnaji Temple was founded by the fifty ninth emperor, Emperor Uda of Japan in the fourth year of Ninna (888 AD). It was formerly called the Old Imperial Palace of Omuro as it served once as a residence for the Emperor of Japan. The temple is now noted as the headquarters of Omuro School of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism. The headquarters of the nationally known Omuro School of Flower Arrangement is also housed in this temple compound.
This temple has one of the best Heian era style garden, one that is not to be missed. In addition to the many buildings in it's precincts, the temple also has a five storied pagoda. Also, in the precincts are Omuro Cherry Trees and during the Cherry Blossom season, the scene is not to be missed. This temple is also closer to Kinkakuji Temple, so you can cover both Temples in one day, if you are visiting Kyoto City. I have a separate video loaded here that depicts the magnificent Ninnaji Temple Garden.
Enjoy!!!!

Places to Go: Ninna-ji Temple
Ninna-ji, a sprawling temple complex in northwestern Kyoto a walkable distance from nearby Ryōan-ji and Kinkaku-ji, is the head temple of the Omuro school, part of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Founded in 888 and designated as a World Heritage Site in 1994, the temple grounds are home to a special breed of cherry blossoms called omuro sakura, fascinating architecture, beautiful gardens and an interesting hiking course. Because of its long history as a temple receiving imperial patronage, Ninna-ji possesses many National Treasures and several Important Cultural Properties, and in addition to more traditional Buddhist worship halls also has the Goten, constructed in a lavish residential style worthy of the name “Omuro Imperial Palace” that shows how emperors of old would have lived.

Beautiful Kyoto: Cherry Blossoms at Ninna-ji Temple [4K]
When it comes to sakura season in Kyoto, you have a lot of options when it comes to the type of flowers you'd like to see. Weeping cherry trees, double-flowered cherry trees, mountain cherry trees... and Omuro cherry trees! This particular type of sakura is shorter than others, features white blossoms, and blooms later than most other types. Ninna-ji temple in northwestern Kyoto is famous for their grove of Omuro Sakura, and the sight of the temple's pagoda over a sea of flowers is iconic. Don't miss Ninna-ji's cherry blossoms in late April!

UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto/Ninna-ji Temple
【Ninna-ji Temple】
Ninna-ji Temple is the head temple of the Omuro school of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism. Located in western Kyoto, Japan, it was founded in AD 888 by the retired Emperor Uda. It is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ninna-ji Temple was founded in the early Heian period. In 886, Emperor Koko ordered the construction of the Nishiyama Goganji Temple to bless the nation and propagate Buddhist teachings, but he did not live to see its completion. Emperor Uda saw the construction to its completion in 888 and named it Ninna after the regnal year of the late Emperor Koko's reign. From 888 to 1869 it was traditional for reigning Emperors to send a son to the temple to take over as head priest when a vacancy arose.
After retiring from his throne, Emperor Uda became the first Monzeki, or aristocratic priest, of Ninna-ji Temple. From then on until the end of the Edo period, the temple saw a succession of head priests of imperial lineage.
In 1467, the temple was destroyed by fire and fighting in the Onin War. It was rebuilt roughly 150 year later, thanks to the eldest son of Emperor Go-Yozei, Kakushin Hosshinno, who enlisted the help of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. The resurrection coincided with the rebuilding of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto and thus received imperial funding.
The tradition of having aristocratic or persons of imperial lineage serve as chief of the temple ended with the 30th Monzeki, Junnin Hosshinno in the late Edo period.
Most of the surviving buildings date from the 17th century, and include a five-story pagoda and an orchard of late blooming dwarf cherry trees called the Omuro cherry trees that would grow to around 2-3 meters (10 feet) in height. The temple itself features some beautifully painted screen walls, and a beautiful walled garden.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Ninna-ji 〜
Ninnaji (仁和寺) is one of the many great temples in Kyoto which are listed as World Heritage Sites. It is the head temple of the Omuro School of the Shingon sect of Buddhism and was founded in 888 by the reigning emperor. Over many centuries, a member of the Imperial Family used to serve as Ninnaji's head priest, and the temple was also known as Omuro Imperial Palace.
Due to the many wars and fires that ravaged Kyoto throughout its history, none of the buildings from the temple's foundation in the 9th century still survive. The oldest buildings date back to the beginning of the Edo Period in the early 1600s, including the main hall (Kondo), the Kannon Hall, the Niomon front gate, the Chumon inner gate and the five storied pagoda.

The highlight of a visit to Ninnaji is the Goten, the former residence of the head priest in the southwestern corner of the temple complex. Built in the style of an imperial palace, the graceful buildings are connected with each other by covered corridors, feature elegantly painted sliding doors (fusuma) and are surrounded by beautiful rock and pond gardens.
