The Imperial Palace eastern Garden in tokyo, Japan - Chiyoda castle

#japan #chiyoda #imperial
The Imperial Palace is the home of the emperor of Japan. It is found in the Chiyoda Ward of Tokyo. The history of this palace dates back to the time when the capitulation of the shogunate and the age of the Meiji Restoration happened. In that period of time, Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu was forced to leave the Edo Castle and that is when the Emperor moved in for a short period of time. This was also the point in time where the castle went from being called the Edo Castle to the Tokei (Tokyo) Castle.
The emperor left for Kyoto for a little while and upon his return, he decided to rename the castle once again to its present name now, the Imperial Castle. To clarify, the castle is not the same as the palace. In that point in time, the Imperial Palace wasn’t even constructed yet. It wasn’t until the fire which burned down the Nishinomaru Palace that the Imperial Palace became an actual project for the Imperial family.
The Nishinomaru Palace, which used to be the household or residence of the shogun, burned down in the year of 1873. The area did not go to waste though as this was the perfect site to build the new Imperial Palace Castle. This new Imperial Palace Castle was built and finished in the year of 1888.
The palace has changed a lot since that time. Presently, the Imperial Palace has exceeded the area once occupied by the former Edo Castle. Advancements in technology and design influenced the modern palace called Kyuden to be made with various imperial court function rooms and reception areas. This growth in the area also made it possible to accommodate the current emperor and empress’ residence in the Fukiage Gardens.
There have also been major changes to the functions of the various grounds in the vicinity of the palace. The west citadel, where the Nisihnomaru Palace used to be, is now occupied by not only the Imperial Palace but also the Imperial Household Agency. This agency is an agency of the Japanese government whose task is to manage any state matters that involve the Imperial Family. Alongside this responsibility are the added duties of keeping the Privy Seal and the State Seal of Japan.
Going back to the present configuration of the ground in the palace, the palace of today is now a renovated version of itself. What used to be isolated portions of structures now stand as one interconnected complex. This design was made possible through the work of the Takenaka Corporation who finished construction on this complex in 1968.
The Kyuden is made up of six major wings namely the Seiden State Function Hall, Homeiden State Banquet Hall, Chowaden Reception Hall, Rensui Dining Room, Chigusa Chidori Drawing Room, and the Emperor’s Work Office. Within these halls are corridors that serve different purposes. An example of these halls would be the Matsu no Ma or the Pine Chamber. It is in this chamber that the emperor entertains the prime minister. This is also where the appointing of major government positions like the ambassadors, Ministers of State, and Chief Justice is done so there are obviously a lot of national events that still happen within these walls.
The grounds of the East Garden also wasn’t always how it is now. In the earlier years, this area used to be where the Honmaru and Ninomaru areas were. These areas were where structures like the donjon or keep stood before it got burned down by the Meiriki fire of 1657. Nowadays, the East Garden is where the majority of the government buildings are found.
Aside from holding the administrative structure, the East Garden is also the part of the palace where you can find the establishments like the Imperial Tokagakudo Music Hall, Music Department of the Board of Ceremonies of the Imperial Household, Museum of the Imperial Collections, and much more. There were also some structures that had to be removed, like the stables and housing, to make the most recent changes possible.
The work on this area began in the year of 1961 and it started with the pond you will find in

Adventures at the Tokyo Imperial Palace
I have mixed feelings about the Imperial Palace near Tokyo Station. I've taken friends there about 10 times (in the last three years). Imperial Palace is in all the tour books... and it is a pretty fun place, but some people find the name misleading.
It's a palace, but you won't see any castles. Or super-fancy/historic buildings. The imperial family still lives there and so a lot of the park is closed off to the public (can you imagine if people were walking around your backyard snapping photos of you every day? That would be awkward, right?)
But they have pretty rock walls and moats.
Imperial Palace is also really popular for runners (because it's HUGE) and school teams doing training. Personally, I used to work kind of close to the Imperial Palace, so I would sit on a bench for 2-3 hours (once a week) and draw comics.
If you're in Tokyo... sure, check it out. But if you want to see a huge, pretty castle, you might be out of luck.

Tokyo Imperial Palace
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tokyo Imperial Palace (皇居 Kōkyo; literally, Imperial Residence) is the main residence of the Emperor of Japan. It is a large park-like area located in the Chiyoda area of Tokyo close to Tokyo Station and contains several buildings including the main palace (Kyūden (宮殿), the private residences of the imperial family, an archive, museum and administrative offices. It is built on the site of the old Edo castle. The total area including the gardens is 3.41 square kilometres (1.32 sq mi). During the height of the 1980s Japanese property bubble, the palace grounds were valued by some as more than the value of all the real estate in the state of California.
East Garden
The East Garden is where most of the administrative buildings for the palace are located and encompasses the former Honmaru and Ninomaru areas of Edo Castle, a total of 210,000 m2 (2,300,000 sq ft). Located on the grounds of the East Garden is the Imperial Tokagakudo Music Hall, the Music Department of the Board of Ceremonies of the Imperial Household, the Archives and Mausolea Department Imperial Household Agency, structures for the guards such as the Saineikan dojo, and the Museum of the Imperial Collections.
Several structures that were added since the Meiji period were removed over time to allow construction of the East Garden. In 1932, the kuretake-ryō was built as a dormitory for imperial princesses, however this building was removed prior to the construction of the present gardens. Other buildings such as stables and housing were removed to create the East Garden in its present configuration.
Construction work began in 1961 with a new pond in the Ninomaru, as well as the repair and restoration of various keeps and structures from the Edo period. On 30 May 1963, the area was declared by the Japanese government a Special Historic Relic under the Cultural Properties Protection Law.

Shinjuku’s Best Kept Secret | Sakura
While the cherry blossoms were still here, I ventured out to somewhere I’ve never been before. Even though it was right in my neighborhood, I had never been to Hakone Yama the whole time I’ve been in Shinjuku!
Hakone Yama is a small hill that over looks some beautiful cherry trees! It’s quite, peaceful, and did I mention haunted? Lol! But really, it is so gorgeous there! This is definitely a place I’d like to have a hanami next year!
Do you know any other interesting hidden gems in Tokyo? I would love to here them!
P.S. The giveaway winners have been chosen and will be announced in the next video!
Stay tuned because the next video will be up in a few days!

- PRESENT PALACE
The present Imperial Palace encompasses the retrenchments of the former Edo Castle. The modern palace Kyūden (宮殿) designed for various imperial court functions and receptions is located in the old Nishinomaru section of the palace grounds. On a much more modest scale, the residence of the current Emperor and empress is located in the Fukiage Gardens. Designed by Japanese architect Shōzō Uchii the modern residence was completed in 1993.
Except for Imperial Household Agency and the East Gardens, the palace is generally closed to the public, except for reserved guided tours from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Each New Year (January 2) and Emperor's Birthday, the public is permitted to enter through the Nakamon (inner gate) where they gather in the Kyuden Totei Plaza in front of the Chowaden Hall. The Imperial Family appears on the balcony before the crowd and the Emperor normally gives a short speech greeting and thanking the visitors and wishing them good health and blessings.
Every year a poetry convention called Utakai Hajime is held at the palace on January 1.
The old Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru compounds now comprise the East Gardens, an area with public access containing administrative and other public buildings.
The Kitanomaru Park is located to the north and is the former northern enceinte of Edo Castle. It is a public park and is the site of Nippon Budokan Hall. To the south are the outer gardens of the Imperial Palace (Kōkyo-gaien), which are also a public park.
- GROUND ( Kyūden )
The Imperial Palace (宮殿 Kyūden) and the headquarters of the Imperial Household Agency are located in the former Nishinomaru enceinte (West Citadel) of the Edo Castle.
The main buildings of the palace grounds, including the Kyūden (宮殿) main palace, home of the liaison conference of the Imperial General Headquarters, were severely damaged by the fire of May 1945. Today's palace consists of multiple modern structures that are interconnected. The palace complex was finished in 1968 and was constructed of steel-framed reinforced concrete structures produced domestically, with two stories above ground and one story below. The buildings of the Imperial Palace were constructed by the Takenaka Corporation in a modernist style with clear Japanese architectural references such as the large, gabled hipped roof, columns and beams.
The complex consists of six wings, including:
Seiden State Function Hall
Hōmeiden State Banquet Hall
Chōwaden Reception Hall
Rensui Dining Room
Chigusa Chidori Drawing Room and
The Emperor's work office
Halls include the Minami-Damari, Nami-no-Ma, multiple corridors, Kita-Damari, Shakkyō-no-Ma, Shunju-no-Ma, Seiden-Sugitoe (Kaede), Seiden-Sugitoe (Sakura), Take-no-Ma, Ume-no-Ma and Matsu-no-Ma. Famous Nihonga artists such as Maeda Seison were commissioned to paint the artworks.
The Kyūden is used for both receiving state guests and holding official state ceremonies and functions. The Matsu-no-Ma (Pine Chamber) is the throne room. The Emperor gives audiences to the Prime Minister in this room, as well as appointing or dismissing ambassadors and Ministers of State. It is also the room where the Prime Minister and Chief Justice is appointed to office.

Solo Trip to Japan: The Most Beautiful Garden! | Japaniku episode 8 (Ikutree)
It's my last full day in Tokyo! :O There was still so much I wanted to see but I still had to make a pick between all that was left so I decided to check out the busy Tsukiji Fish Market and then I walked around the Nihombashi area and the Imperial Palace Gardens which was so incredibly beautiful! I seem to have lost some footage from that day, a lot of it from the market and some of it from the gardens but a least for the latter I had more than enough to give you a feel of what it was like. Missing you already Tokyo! See you soon!
Last October, I went on my very first solo trip all the way to my dream destination: Japan (!) with the firm intention of documenting my voyage as much as I could to share with you guys.
I hope that you'll enjoy discovering Japan through my lens and that I can motivate some of you to take that leap and to travel alone. If my shy bunny butt can do it, so can you! I'll be going from Tokyo through Osaka, Kyoto and Nara down to Hiroshima, Miyajima and Okunoshima before heading back to Tokyo but not without taking a brief day trip to Hakone before I fly back to Brussels.
I have TONS of footage to get through so bear with me and stay tuned for many more episodes of Japaniku!
Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions and/or feedback in the comments.
