HALAL HOT POT!!!! Exploring Chinese Muslim Food in BEIJING, China
A day full of eating purely HALAL in Beijing, China. Thank you to the Chinese Muslims for making all this possible. You all really know how to make some truly delicious foods! Beijing really surprised me with having such a large Muslim population and is home to the most Muslim minorities in China.
First off, I started the day at Baodu Feng 爆肚冯. A place that has been operating since 1881 and has specialized in one thing, tripe. Serving beef and sheep tripe in an astonishing 13 different ways. Each category is cut and cooked a specific way resulting in the best product each time. Each variation has a different texture, taste, and experience. However, the star of the show for me is the fresh, creamy, sesame butter!
Up next I went to try some cheese good enough for royalty at Cheese Wei 奶酪魏. Now this isn’t your normal cheese and this recipe has remained, almost, the same since the Qing Dynasty. Rice wine, milk, and sugar make up this snack and I like to think of it as a cheesecake and tofu pudding hybrid. I also couldn’t pass up the fried butter puffs because with a name like that how could it not be delicious?
The last stop for the day was at Ju Bao Yuan Hot Pot Restaurant 聚宝源火锅城, a restaurant that is unbelievably popular for it’s HALAL HOT POT! With a real pride in the butcher shops on Niu Jie Street you can see that carry over into the insane quality of meat you get to dunk into this raging hot copper hot pot! However, do not forget to order up a few (or the max limit) of their shaobing. Incredibly dense and delicious.
Of course, it doesn’t stop there as I head right next door to stuff my already at capacity full belly with some sweet treats loved by the masses.

Full of food at Streets of Uyghur - Niujie street, Beijing china
Niujie (Chinese: 牛街; pinyin: Niú jiē; Wade–Giles: Niu-chieh Oxen Street[1]) is a neighborhood at Guang'anmen,[2] in Xicheng District in southwest Beijing. The name Niujie can refer to the street Niujie or to the neighborhood Niujie.[3] The community was previously in Xuanwu District before the district was merged into Xicheng in 2010.
The Niujie district is administered by the Niujie Street Administrative Office. The core area of this district is along the street Niujie.[1] The Niujie core area, a Hui people neighborhood,[4] has Beijing's largest concentration of Muslim people.[2] As of 2013 there is a Muslim-oriented hospital as well as social services, cafés, shops, restaurants, and schools catering to the Muslim population.[5] In 2002 Wenfei Wang, Shangyi Zhou, and C. Cindy Fan, authors of Growth and Decline of Muslim Hui Enclaves in Beijing, wrote that Niujie continues to thrive as a major residential area of the Hui people in Beijing and as a prominent supplier of Hui foods and services for the entire city.[4] The neighborhood has the Niujie Mosque, which according to Wenfei Wang, Shangyi Zhou, and Cindy Fan, mark[s] the identity of Niujie and has an element of centrality in the community.[6] Most larger Hui neighborhoods in Beijing have their own mosques.[3]
