Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin
The Kremlin, the cradle of Nizhny Novgorod, is the single most important and biggest landmark in the city. Some local historians have a simple explanation for why the founder of Nizhny Novgorod Yury (or Georgy) Vsevolodovich, the grandson of the founder of Moscow, Yury Dolgorukiy, built the Kremlin on the high bank of the Volga: he was enchanted by the view of the Strelka and beyond, opening up from the hills. The view is indeed tantalizing, but security must have been his other consideration. Even when the fortress was all wooden, it offered solid protection from the enemies, while the river on the other side served as a natural barrier. The Kremlin was rebuilt in stone in the 16th century. The tea.m. of architects and builders from Pskov was joined by the Italian architect Pietro Francesco, who was known in Russia as Piotr Fryazin.
The Kremlin has 13 towers. Some of them have survived intact, others have been restored. No two towers are alike architecturally and each has its own cache of legends.
Now, as centuries ago, the main entrance to the Kremlin is through St. Demetrios Tower, the largest Kremlin tower. It was named in honour of the Church of St. Demetrios of Thessaloniki, which had once stood in front of it. That church was later replaced by the Church of the Annunciation, which, similarly to three other churches on Kremlin grounds, would not survive the years of Soviet rule.
The 18th-century buildings inside the Kremlin currently house the Legislative Assembly, the Philharmonic and the Arbitration Court. The Soviet-era architectural landmarks next door are home to the regional government, the office of the envoy plenipotentiary of the President of Russia in the Volga Federal District, the city Mayor’s Office and the local Duma. The Modern Art Museum occupies the Czarist-era military arsenal building. The Art Museum is based in the former Governor’s Mansion, and the Military Technology Museum is deployed outdoors. All the military equipment on display was manufactured in Nizhny Novgorod, and all is in good working order. Perhaps the most monumental piece of machinery on show is the T-34 tank, manufactured by Krasnoe Sormovo Factory, standing next to the Eternal Flame and the sculptural memorial commemorating the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War.
Apart from its incontestable historical value, the Kremlin is dear to every Nizhny Novgorod resident on a personal level. Prom parties and lovers hang out on the sloping edge of Kremlin Boulevard till dawn, newlyweds bring flowers to the Eternal Flame on their wedding day, and parents bring their children here for New Year’s Eve parties at the Philharmonic inside the Kremlin walls.

Russia: Suspected terrorist recruiter detained in Moscow raid
Federal Security Service officers detained a suspected recruiter for the banned militant organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir during a raid in Moscow, Tuesday.
During the raid, officers seized a booklet on Wahhabism, a laptop and a mobile phone, amongst other things. The suspect is reportedly from the Russian Republic of Tatarstan and officers believe that he has recruited Russian people to fight for militant groups in both Iraq and Syria.

STORYLINE:
State television has reported about 30 people have died in the last three days alone as Russia's massive forest fires have wiped out villages and vast areas of woodland. Officials insist some of the worst blazes are under control.
Fires are still afflicting at least 14 regions early Saturday, with the Voronezh and Nizhny Novgorod provinces the worst affected, Rossiya-24 TV reported.
Moscow and other regions are currently suffering their hottest summer since records began 130 years ago.
An Associated Press reporter in Voronezh city, which has 850,000 people and is 300 miles (475 kilometres) south of Moscow, saw half a village reduced to ash and stunned locals sifting through the dust for possessions to salvage.
When we arrived the fence was on fire, and the flames and wind were so strong that we couldn't come near for around twenty minutes, said resident Dmitry Vyshelov.
First we tried to put out the fire and then we started to grab a few things like important documents. We managed to save some things, then the police and firemen told us to keep clear, he added.
Residents pooled what little food they had to ensure everyone had something to eat.

Russia: Mother confesses to strangling her two children to death
A woman, identified as Elena Karimova, confessed to strangling her two young children to death, at a hearing in the Moscow District Court of Nizhny Novgorod on Saturday.
According to the regional Investigative Committee, the woman allegedly strangled her four-year old daughter and two-year old son in the back seat of a rented car on April 25. On the same day, the defendant allegedly attempted to get rid of the dead bodies. She reportedly bought a lighter fluid at a gas station, drove to the forest and set the bodies on fire.
Fearing that she could have been seen by hunters, she allegedly knocked down the flames with water, put the bodies back into the vehicle and returned to Nizhny Novgorod. The next day, she reportedly took the bodies to the Semenovsky district of Nizhny Novgorod Region, where she once again set them alight in an abandoned building and then fled the scene.
The defendant reportedly said that she had committed the crime because she could not financially support her children. She is believed to be divorced and unemployed. The woman spent more than 40,000 rubles (€530/$643) a month to rent a car and, shortly before allegedly killing her children, she booked a tour abroad, according to investigators.
A criminal case has been opened to investigate the violent killing of two young children. Karimova has been detained as a suspect for a period of two months.
Prior to the hearing, Karimova said that she regrets the crime; however, she did not provide further details, saying, I will say everything in court.

Possible result annulments in Russia election
(19 Sep 2016) The head of the Central Election Commission said on Monday that the results of Russian parliamentary elections in several polling stations may be annulled following reports of voting violations.
Ella Pamfilova said her team would be acting very thoroughly and quickly to investigate violation reports in three regions - Dagestan, Rostov and Nizhny Novgorod.
During voting day on Sunday, local election commission webcam footage from some polling stations in the three regions affected appeared to show ballot boxes being stuffed, while other amateur footage appeared to show alleged malpractice during the monitoring of the voting process.
Near-complete results from Russia's national parliament election show the Kremlin's power-base party United Russia taking an overwhelming majority of the seats.
The Central Elections Commission said Monday that with 90 percent of the vote counted, United Russia had 54 percent of the vote for the 225 seats chosen nationwide by party list.
United Russia candidates were also ahead in 203 of the races for the other 225 seats chosen by district.

Underground in one of the world's largest gypsum mines
(26 Mar 2017) LEADIN:
Russia is home to one of the world's biggest gypsum mines, producing the mineral which has been vital to the building industry.
While the way it is mined has changed over the years, gypsum remains an important component in the production of plaster.
STORYLINE:
Deep underground in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia lies one of the region's most prized mines.
The white walls of this cavern are made from hydrated calcium sulfate, much better known as gypsum.
It is a non-metallic mineral found in layers, in desert areas where the ocean has evaporated leaving behind the sediment.
Each year the miners here produce around 465 square metres of the white mineral.
This mine has been in production since the mid twentieth century.
Miner Vladimir Kolusin explains it's a difficult and dirty job: First we clean the space, then drillers come in which are followed by those who use explosives. Our task is to come first in the morning to mine the gypsum, We also wash it with water to minimize the dust.
The mine has undergone many changes since it opened with the introduction of industrial sized diggers. But the old railway system to cart the gypsum remains similar to the original.
Miner Sergey Ladin says: Before you take out gypsum you have to load it into the wagon, my job is to hitch up wagons for the transportation.
The greatest change came to these mines when the miners no longer relied on horses to drag the heavy sacks of gypsum to the surface.
The mine now even has its own museum in which the role of the horses is honoured and remembered.
Guide Elena Komisarova explains: In the 1930s gypsum stones were brought to the surface with the help of horses. Of course, the fate of those horses was not enviable, they lived in a mine, they were actually born here, they died here. They transported gypsum to the surface, but they could not reach the surface itself because there was scarcely any light in the mine and if those horses come out to the surface they'd be blinded.
Fortunately horses have not worked here for many decades.
These days machines do the work once done by the horses, but of course the miners are still here.
Getting the rock to the surface involves several stages.
First the face of the gypsum is excavated, then hole are drilled and loaded with explosives.
After being blasted, gypsum is loaded on trucks and delivered to the crushing site.
Crushed stones are loaded into the railway wagons and delivered to the surface where it is used for a variety of purposes.
Gypsum is used in the production of the finest alabaster and plaster of Paris.
The life underground is not an easy one, but it has its pleasures.
The miners here say it's the perfect place to grow the onions and mushroom so essential to the Russian diet.
Miner and grower Anatoly Melnikovist says the mine's environment offers the optimum growing environment with a constant temperature and humidity.
We bring seeds here from far away. How long ago? The biggest mushroom is one and a half weeks and already it is possible to harvest it, he says.
For the onions, we simply plant them, pour water on them and they grow.
Perhaps in another hundred years the mine will be equally famous for its perishable produce.
If you have broken a limb you will have had cause to rely on gypsum for your recovery.
Some of the gypsum is brought to a hospital here, near the mine.
As well as making ornamental walls, beautiful vases and cement in new houses, it is a vital part of the plaster cast used to set bones.
