Oldest REAL Speakeasy in LA - Townhouse, Venice California
The Townhouse bar in Venice, California, and its downstairs Speakeasy, the Del Monte Speakeasy, is probably one of the coolest places we've ever been too.
It was originally a buffet--a bar that sold food--before prohibition, and then became a grocery store during prohibition. The upstairs did anyway. Below the grocery store was a fine speakeasy, complete with entertainment and quality Canadian whiskey.
The bar was bought and refurbished by celebrated bar owner Louie Ryan, who brought in a Hollywood set designer to recreate the look and feel of a period speakeasy. Ryan also brought in craft cocktail expert Brandon Ristaino who immediately set about putting Townhouse on the map for good drinks.
This is a must-see destination in Los Angeles. Get there early to sit at the bar and soak in the atmosphere. Then when the live entertainment gets started, head downstairs to the dark and sexy speakeasy for dancing or a show.
