Voyage of Discovery part 12: Kobe, Japan Around the World Semester at Sea
Kobe is most famous for its Kobe beef and Arima Onsen (or hot springs). Notable buildings include the Ikuta Shrine as well as the Kobe Port Tower. It is well known for the night view of the city, from mountains such as Mount Rokkō, and Mount Maya as well as the coast. Kobe is also known for having a somewhat exotic atmosphere by Japanese standards, which is mainly as a result of its history as a port city.
The city is also widely associated with cosmopolitanism and fashion, encapsulated in the Japanese phrase, If you can't go to Paris, go to Kobe.[42] The biannual fashion event Kobe Fashion Week, centered around the Kobe Collection is held in Kobe.[43] The jazz festival Kobe Jazz Street has been held every October at jazz clubs and hotels since 1981
Earthquake proof: Japan building made quake-safe by curtain of cables anchoring it down - TomoNews
NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design.
With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure.
CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter.
The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls.
When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking.
The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples.

At least six killed by Typhoon Jebi, Kansai International Airport flooded
At least six people were reported killed in Japan as typhoon Jebi sliced across the west on Tuesday, creating havoc at airports and damaging buildings.
The storm made landfall on Shikoku, the smallest main island, around noon. It raked across the western part of the largest main island, Honshu, near the city of Kobe, several hours later, before heading out to the Sea of Japan in the evening.
Seconds from Disaster S02E06 Kobe Earthquake
The Japanese city of Kobe is rocked by the Great Hanshin earthquake, which destroys most of its buildings. Many traditional houses collapse due to the heavy roofs and weak walls. Liquefaction occurs at the coastal and port areas of Kobe. 6,434 people die in what is then Japan's worst peacetime disaster.

The Port of Felixstowe welcomes AAL Kobe delivering 4 brand new Robot RTG's. 13th April 2019
The Port of Felixstowe welcomes the AAL KOBE which was carrying the first 4 of 10 robot RTG's for the new container storage yard which is nearing completion as part of Hutchinson's expansion plan.
The AAL Kobe sailed direct from Singapore with the first batch of RTG's. The Harwich Haven pilot launch ST Christopher goes alongside the AAL Kobe to board a pilot for the inbound passage in to the port.
Once onboard, the pilot radios Harwich VTS to confirm he was onboard and inbound for Trinity 2. VTS confirms there was a ready berth planned port side to Felixstowe Trinity 2. VTS continues with the wind on the Landguard and height of tide. The pilot requests one tug for berthing, to meet inside the harbour. Duty tug copies the conversation.
Approaching the harbour, Svitzer Deben leaves the tug pontoon with two passengers onboard for the arrival of the new RTG's. Rounding the Beach End, the Deben charges up astern releasing a bit of black smoke from the funnels. The pilot says it might be easier to make fast starboard of centre to help with a port swing to go port side to Trinity 2. He continues to say the safe bollard rating was 42 tonnes so he would only be going upto a 50% pull.
Once fast, the Deben follows astern of the AAL Kobe as she turns to a Westerly heading before the pilot gets the Deben to move out on to the starboard side and swings her to port.
Half way through the swing, the pilot gets the Deben to come in to push position. The pilot lines her up to the berth where the RTG's will be offloaded.

Japan Glass Anti-tsunami Wall, Kobe (Alex Takes Over)
Indeed part of Kobe's anti-tsunami wall is from glass or a kind of transparent polymer resembling very much glass. I really hope it is strong enough to sustain the pressure if a real tsunami hit us.
During the movie Alex spontaneously started to deliver his own version of the presentation so I let him continue. I hope it does not dilute too much the movie.

Japanese Pop Culture is Saving the Countryside | The HELLO KITTY Plan ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japan has a problem. More and more tourists are visiting but very few of them leave the trail between Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima.
Well, one company has a plan to help revitalize Japan's aging and declining population and countryside. Use Japanese Pop Culture to turn heads and bring attention to one of Japan's most beautiful and relatively unknown spot in Kansai, Awaji Island.
Awaji Island has no train stations.
There is very little tourist infrastructure.
What do they have? Rice paddies, onion fields, lots of green hills surrounded by the sea -- and now, Hello Kitty!
Recently opened Hello Kitty Show Box is a strange sight from the air. It's surrounded by farm pastures and well, just doesn't seem to fit, which is why it's perfect! It's 100% and unequivocally ONLY in JAPAN!
Where is the Hello Kitty Show Box?
URL:
By BUS: Awaji IC (Awaji Interchage) is the main access point on the island. There are buses hat leave from Osaka Station, Kansai Airport, Kobe (Sannomiya Station) and Shin-Kobe Station.
It takes about 45 to 90 minutes to get there. At Awaji IC, there are free shuttle buses to all the attractions. Links: (get off at Awaji IC)
By FERRY (Awaya Port) there's a shuttle bus:
We stayed at the Grand Chariot for a night.
The Hello Kitty Smile is a shirt trip from the Show Box on the coast.
Thank you to the Pasona Group for the help, talking about their plans and ambitious goals to help revitalize a beautiful area of Japan. Keep up the great work!

The Sea Of Japan Earthquake of 1983
The 1983 Sea of Japan earthquake or 1983 Nihonkai-Chubu earthquake occurred on May 26, 1983 at 11:59:57 local time (02:59:57 UTC). It had a magnitude of 7.8 on the moment magnitude scale. It occurred in the Sea of Japan, about 100 km west of the coast of Noshiro in Akita Prefecture, Japan. Out of the 104 fatalities, all but four were killed by the resulting tsunami, which struck communities along the coast, especially Aomori and Akita Prefectures and the east coast of Noto Peninsula. Images of the tsunami hitting the fishing harbor of Wajima on Noto Peninsula was broadcast on TV. The waves exceeded 10 meters (33 ft) in some areas. Three of the fatalities were along the east coast of South Korea (whether North Korea was affected is not known). The tsunami also hit Okushiri Island, the site of a more deadly tsunami 10 years la

Carrier Strike Group USS Carl Vinson Begins Patrol In South China Sea Update
SOUTH CHINA SEA (NNS) -- Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1, including Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1's Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108), and aircraft from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, began routine operations in the South China Sea, Feb. 18.
Prior to their operations in the South China Sea, ships and aircraft from within the strike group conducted training off the islands of Hawaii and Guam to maintain and improve their readiness and develop cohesion as a strike group. The strike group recently enjoyed a port visit to Guam and after departing the Marianas, conducted operations in the Philippine Sea.
The training completed over the past few weeks has really brought the team together and improved our effectiveness and readiness as a strike group, said Rear Adm. James Kilby, commander, CSG 1. We are looking forward to demonstrating those capabilities while building upon existing strong relationships with our allies, partners and friends in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
Vinson last deployed to the Western-Pacific in 2015 and conducted a bilateral exercise with the Royal Malaysian Navy and Royal Malaysian Air Force in the South China Sea. Vinson first operated in the South China Sea in 1983 and in total, has operated there during 16 previous deployments over its 35 year history.
While deployed, the Carl Vinson CSG will remain under U.S. 3rd Fleet command and control, including beyond the international dateline, which previously divided operational areas of responsibility for 3rd and 7th Fleets. Third Fleet operating forward offers additional options to the Pacific Fleet commander by leveraging the capabilities of 3rd and 7th Fleets. This operational concept allows both numbered fleets to complement one another and provide the foundation of stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
CVW-2 includes the Black Knights of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 4, the Blue Hawks of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 78, the Bounty Hunters of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 2, the Blue Blasters of VFA-34, the Kestrels of VFA-137, the Golden Dragons of VFA-192, the Black Eagles of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 113, the Gauntlets of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 136 and the Providers of Fleet Logistic Support Squadron (VRC) 30.
An international court handed down a decision that pointed a finger at the unjustness of Beijing’s self-serving actions and statements related to its territorial claims in the South China Sea.
Regarding the so-called nine-dash line - based on which China claims sovereignty - the arbitration court said there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights. The court also said there was no evidence that China had historically exercised exclusive control over the resources and waters.
The international court further concluded that China was not entitled to an exclusive economic zone for the artificial islands it has constructed in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.#CHexit

Last Days in Japan
This is going to be my last vlog in Japan. We went to Kobe and tried kobe meat for the first time, visited the takoyaki museum at the universal city walk in Osaka, took the bullet train to Mt. Fuji (which is spectacular to see in person), and finally got to fit in Tsukiji Fish Market before we head home. This market is a must!!! I wish we could have gone there earlier because I caught something and wasn't feeling well towards the end of our trip (hence my voice and stuffy nose). Overall, it was a fun-filled trip to Japan and I would love to visit again someday!

Cities: Skylines - PROJECT JAPAN #1 - Large train station, business and commercial district
In episode #1, we kickstart the city by building a large train station situated in the Hayachiru inner-city neighbourhood, which is comprised of a skyscraper business district in it's northern part and a commercial shopping and leisure avenue in it's southern part.

Project Japan is a humble attempt to build a somewhat realistic looking Japanese city situated somewhere between Okayama and Kobe on the northern shore of the Harima-nada sea.
Focusing on developments along train stations, large intersections and public transportation hubs, many of the more generic areas will be built off camera, to quickly expand the city and capture the metropolitan vibe.
Japanese city series are almost non-existent, perhaps because of the serious lack of Japanese themed assets on the workshop. Finding inspiration can be tricky. Therefore, revamps are to be expected throughout the series, as i get better at building Japanese cityscapes and/or new assets become available.
