Normandy Vlog Part 8, Saint Mere Eglise & Utah Beach
Normandy Vlog Part 8, Saint Mere Eglise & Utah Beach. The early landings, at about 0140 directly on the town, resulted in heavy casualties for the paratroopers. Some buildings in town were on fire that night, and they illuminated the sky, making easy targets of the descending men. Some were sucked into the fire. Many hanging from trees and utility poles were shot before they could cut loose.
A well-known incident involved paratrooper John Steele of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), whose parachute caught on the spire of the town church, and could only observe the fighting going on below. He hung there limply for two hours, pretending to be dead, before the Germans took him prisoner. Steele later escaped from the Germans and rejoined his division when US troops of the 3rd Battalion, 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment attacked the village, capturing thirty Germans and killing another eleven. The incident was portrayed in the movie The Longest Day by actor Red Buttons.
Later that morning, about 0500, a force led by Lt. Colonel Edward C. Krause of the 505th PIR took the town with little resistance.
Krause and Lt. Colonel Benjamin H. Vandervoort both received the Distinguished Service Cross for their actions in the capture of the town. Sgt. George Bowler Tullidge III received the Bronze Star, while a collection of Bible verses and of his letters home, A Paratrooper's Faith was distributed throughout the 82nd Airborne by his parents from after his death until the 1990s. 2nd Lt. Thomas J. Tighe of the 70th Tank Battalion received the Silver Star posthumously for his actions on the morning of June 7th in securing the town, during which he was killed when his tank was hit by German artillery fire.[6]
Henry Langrehr was also involved in the capture of Sainte-Mère-Église. He crashed through a greenhouse roof, as retold in The Longest Day.
Utah Beach, was the code name for one of the five sectors of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France in the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), during World War II. The westernmost of the five code-named landing beaches in Normandy, Utah is on the Cotentin Peninsula, west of the mouths of the Douve and Vire rivers. Amphibious landings at Utah were undertaken by United States Army troops, with sea transport, mine sweeping, and a naval bombardment force provided by the United States Navy and Coast Guard as well as elements from the British, Dutch and other Allied navies.
The objective at Utah was to secure a beachhead on the Cotentin Peninsula, the location of important port facilities at Cherbourg. The amphibious assault, primarily by the US 4th Infantry Division and 70th Tank Battalion, was supported by airborne landings of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Division. The intention was to rapidly seal off the Cotentin Peninsula, prevent the Germans from reinforcing Cherbourg, and capture the port as quickly as possible. Utah, along with Sword on the eastern flank, was added to the invasion plan in December 1943. These changes doubled the frontage of the invasion and necessitated a month-long delay so that additional landing craft and personnel could be assembled in England. Allied forces attacking Utah faced two battalions of the 919th Grenadier Regiment, part of the 709th Static Infantry Division. While improvements to fortifications had been undertaken under the leadership of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel beginning in October 1943, the troops assigned to defend the area were mostly poorly equipped non-German conscripts.
D-Day at Utah began at 01:30, when the first of the airborne units arrived, tasked with securing the key crossroads at Sainte-Mère-Église and controlling the causeways through the flooded farmland behind Utah so the infantry could advance inland. While some airborne objectives were quickly met, many paratroopers landed far from their drop zones and were unable to fulfill their objectives on the first day. On the beach itself, infantry and tanks landed in four waves beginning at 06:30 and quickly secured the immediate area with minimal casualties. Meanwhile, engineers set to work clearing the area of obstacles and mines, and additional waves of reinforcements continued to arrive. At the close of D-Day, Allied forces had only captured about half of the planned area and contingents of German defenders remained, but the beachhead was secure.
The 4th Infantry Division landed 21,000 troops on Utah at the cost of only 197 casualties. Airborne troops arriving by parachute and glider numbered an additional 14,000 men, with 2,500 casualties. Around 700 men were lost in engineering units, 70th Tank Battalion, and seaborne vessels sunk by the enemy. German losses are unknown. Cherbourg was captured on June 26, but by this time the Germans had destroyed the port facilities, which were not brought back into full operation until September.

Our flight over Sainte-Mere-Eglise in a T-6 and C-47 during D-Day 72nd anniversary
To commemorate our long-awaited joint trip to Normandy, John arranged for me to have a flight in a 1943 T6 (Texan). This airplane would be the escort for two WWII era C47 troop carriers and paratroopers making a historic jump over Saint Mere Eglise, coordinated by the Round Canopy Parachuting Team (big ‘thank you’ to Huber, Dominique and Peter). John flew in “Drag ‘Em Oot” along with one WWII veteran from the 101st Airborne, and 20 paratroopers. He was harnessed so he could stand at the open door and film the paratroopers, as well as me since I was flying a couple of hundred feet away almost at the same level as the C47. The sound of the engines, the adrenalin of the paratroopers, the historic reenactment of the jump and the chance to see Normandy from the air evaporated my hesitation. The beauty… oh the sheer beauty of like flying into an emerald or a Van Gogh painting. The green of Normandy was mesmerizing. Watching the paratroopers stand at the open door and signal to jump, then jump and watch them (at eye level) start their decent and to see their parachutes open from my vantage point above them, well – it is a memory I will always carry with me. Looking across the space between the T6 and the C47 and seeing John standing in the open door waving to me was also an incredible moment.
There was another heart with me in the plane. Not literally but in spirit. Our dear friend, Peggy Harris. She could not be in Normandy to visit her husband’s grave so I was doing my best to include her in all of my activities. On the flight, I took a special scarf bought in France. This scarf was also taken to Billie’s grave and draped on his cross. We will also take the scarf to Les Ventes his place of death. Once the scarf has completed its travels, we will send it to Peggy. Thank you, John, for an amazing experience. XXX
