The Dakotas
South Dakota and North Dakota, two northern plains states in these United States, but they are not as plain as you might assume.
Once part of the mighty Dakota Territory, one of the last areas of the country Americans settled, they split up, and today there is a mild rivalry between the two. People get them mixed up, although in this video I’m going to explain how they are quite different, despite sharing part of a name.
But first, what do they have in common? Well, other than being irregularly-shaped rectangles.
Both are about the same size, although South Dakota is a bit bigger. There’s also not a big difference between the population of the two states, although South Dakota has more people. Historically, their populations have rarely been far apart, with North Dakota’s population even surpassing South Dakota’s a few times. Currently, North Dakota is growing at a faster rate. Both don’t have a metro area that even gets near half a million people, which is why Minneapolis-St. Paul is pretty influential over both.
Both states are considered part of the Midwest. Most of the two states are made up of mostly prairie, part of what’s known as The Great Plains. Both have mostly continental climates, and generally the further west you go in each state, the drier it gets. For example, the annual precipitation in Fargo, North Dakota is 22.6 inches, while it’s 14.4 inches out west in Williston. It’s 26.3 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, while it’s 16.3 out west in Rapid City.
While both have four seasons, both have fairly mild summers and long, extremely cold winters. North Dakota does get a little colder in the winter being further north.
The Missouri River is the major river that runs through both states. Both are about as far from the ocean as you can get.
West of the Missouri River in both states, the land becomes much more rugged, with badlands and buttes.
Both are mostly rural states with lots of agriculture.
Residents of both states are younger, on average, than most of the country. (36.8 SD, 35 ND). Residents of both also tend to be Christian. 77% in North Dakota and 79% in South Dakota identify as such. And most residents in both are of European descent. The largest ethnic minority in both states today is American Indian.
Both states lean conservative politically, and reliably have voted for the Republican Party since the 1960s.
So how about those differences?
The poverty rate is lower in North Dakota (10.3%-13%). However, crime is a little lower in South Dakota. More North Dakota residents have college degrees. And the cost of living is generally higher in North Dakota.

Medieval America 27: Six States from St Louis to Fargo
In this episode of my trip around America I continue my journey north in the center of the country. I traveled into six new states, and cover 1250 miles in the course of eight days traveling ever north from St. Louis Missouri all the way to Fargo North Dakota.
We stop at several castles and a major museum.
With this video and the previous video (episode 26) I went from the New Orleans at the south of America all the way north to Fargo North Dakota bifurcating the country. There was a big swing in temperate and a constant uphill climb. I also noticed now in this video that the terrain is changing there is a lot more open space with enormous open fields and gentle rolling hills, with much fewer trees. It is clear we are heading toward the prairie states.

The Mars Cheese Castle in Wisconsin
Madison Wisconsin: The Morgridge Center Also known as the Red Gym, It was built in 1894 and was used as an armory and gymasium for the University of Wisconsin. It was designed in the Romanesque Revival style.
Then West on Route 18 across part of Iowa which is one of the most beautiful drives I have taken. all the way to Mason city Iowa. A little over 200 miles.
Then North into Minnesota for Minneapolis, St Paul and St cloud for four castles:
The Landmark Center in St Paul- Completed in 1902 it is also in the Romanesque Revival style but notice how different it looks because of the different stone compared to the Red Gym, (This building is pink granite ashlar) It was initially used as the State post office, courthouse and customs house.
The American Swedish Institute (The Swan Turnblad Mansion) It is built in Chateauesque style which is a revival style architecture based onFrench Renaissance Architecture. IT was completed in 1910 and is made of Bedford Limestone. It is also known as the swedish castle.
The Stanford Newel House in St. Paul It The core of the building was built in 1864 by a man named Lasher during the Civil War using locally quarried limestone. It was purchased in 1886 by Stanford Newel and upgraded with the tower and battlements added.
The UMinn NROTC Building - in Minneapolis, it is the University of Minnesota Armory. It was constructed in 1896. It originally served as the University Armory and Gymnasium. Over the years it has served various purposes and now is the home of the University Naval ROTC and gymnasium.
Fergus Falls Minnesota for the Kirkbride Building also known as the Fergus Falls State Mental Health Hospital . It is purported to be haunted. Construction was completed in 1907.
Ending in Fargo North Dakota and Unicorn Park.
Next up I will be traveling west and covering some of the Prairie States.

Homes For Sale In Fargo ND
When considering homes for sale in Fargo, ND, it's crucial to analyze the steps involved in the real estate transaction.
Monthly Payments. This is usually the first topic you ponder before you even begin to look at homes for sale in Fargo, ND. The attraction lately is that interest rates are so low that a mortgage payment is starting to resemble a rent payment, and not necessarily for cheap houses. The other side of the coin here is that lenders have really tightened up the lending process and requirements because of so mant foreclosed homes nationally. Your best bet here may be to hook up with a respected Real Estate Agent in the Fargo, ND area, and have them help you coordinate this, and the other steps, such as determining your ideal home and compiling similar homes for you to look at. They will usually have a partnership with a top-notch lender that will crunch the numbers for you, then you have a much better idea of what homes for sale in Fargo, ND that will meet your budgeting criteria.
The Offer. When making an offer on homes for sale in Fargo, ND, I've always thought that the Real Estate Agent should be bonused based on how much money they save you in relation to the listing price, provided the listing price made sense in the first place. Currently, the agents on both sides of the transaction are paid based o the selling price. This seems like a conflict is the Buyers Agent scenario.
