Driving Kahekili Hwy ( north 340 ) Maui , Hawaii Feb 2019
State Highway 30 and County Highway 340, on the north side of the West Maui Mountains!!
Honoapiilani Hwy. (HI St. Hwy. 30) from Nakalele Blowhole to Napili-Honokowai in Maui, HI (1 of 2)
This is part 1 of 2 showing the Honoapiilani Hwy. also known as HI St. Hwy. 30 from the Nakalele Blowhole on the north side of west Maui going mainly south back towards the Napili-Honokowai area of Maui in mid-January of 2017. Specifically, if anyone cares, part 2 of the video ends at Akahele St., so both parts of the video combined show the highway from the Blowhole to Akahele St. Also, one huge FYI--Bing and Google maps are wrong about the route no. designation of part of the highway shown in this video because they show highway 30 ending before you get to the Blowhole whereas in point of fact, it actually continues for some 3 miles beyond the Blowhole (assuming you are coming from Kapalua). So, nothwithstanding what it says on Bing and Google, the entire highway shown in this complete video from Nakalele Blowhole to Akahele St. all is, according to the mile marker signs and highway signs along the highway, it is all HI St. Hwy. 30. Route numbers aside, this highway is also known as the north Maui coastal highway and is a very scenic drive for most of the way.
maui hwy 340 north island
Maui: Hwy 340 around the north tip of the island. The State Hwy30 ends and the road turns into a single lane dirt road which follows the terrain. The road is cut into the mountainside. There are few pullouts and you have to wait for opposing traffic to pass before you can continue. The side closest to the cliff is better than the embankment side so we drove in a clockwise direction. We did not know that rental cars are not allowed to navigate this road.
driving on HI Highway 380 north from Kihei Jct. toward Kahului, Maui, Hawaii January 2013
This was our drive from Kihei Junction on Highway 380 northbound towards Kahului on Maui, Hawaii on January 17, 2013 in the late afternoon and early evening.
HI Hwy. 340 (north Maui coast highway) east from HI St. Hwy. 30 to HI Hwy. 3400 (1 of 2)
This is part 1 of 2 showing Hawaii Hwy. 340 a/k/a the Kahekili Hwy. going east from its beginning where Hawaii St. Hwy. 30 ends until Hwy. 340 itself ends at is junction with HI Hwy. 3400. This highway is also known as the north Maui coast highway and according to TripAdvisor it is Maui's northern coastal scenic route. The date of filming was Sunday, January 15, 2017 and the vehicle we are in is a 2017 rental Toyota Corolla.
Maui Hawaii Road Trip
Maui Hawaii Road Trip
We went on a five day road trip along the coast of Maui. Maui is a fantastic environment in that each side has a different habitat. For each of our five days, we embarked on an adventure to a new location. Each day, the habitat and animals we saw were new and unique to the days before. It is an amazing experience that we encountered many different aspects on one island.
The island is formed by the volcano, so the beaches were covered with black rocks, which are molten lava cooled down.
The atmosphere and attitude in Maui Hawaii are very relaxing. It is a escape from the busy lives of the cities. In Maui Hawaii, when I step out of my room, everything I see and do takes my mind off of work.
We concluded our trip watching the sunset on top of Haleakala, Maui's most famous volcano. The view was above the clouds, and felt like we were standing above the sky.
Our Journey:
Road to Hana - Hana - Wailea - Lahaina - Haleakala

HI Hwy. 340 (north Maui coast Hwy.) east from HI St. Hwy. 30 to Kahakuloa
This shows HI Hy. 340 a/k/a the Kahekili Hy. from its beginning at the end of Hawaii State Hy. 30 (which is marked by a sign saying end state highway) as far east as the eastern edge of the small settlement of Kahakuloa. This is on west Maui's north shore and is the coastal highway. The date is Sunday, January 15, 2017. This is a very scenic and remote area on Maui and as you can see, it is partially 1 lane and a real challenge at times. The scenery though is worth it. One fyi for those interested in map accuracy--both Bing and Google maps are wrong about where Hy. 340 starts and where State Hy. 30 ends. This video shows the actual beginning of Hy. 340 which would be where State Hy. 30 ends and the mile markers saying Hy. 30 end. Importantly, that point is some 3 miles east of the Nakalele Blowhole whereas the maps show Hy. 340 starting at Honokohau Bay which is a mile or so west of the Blowhole. So notwithstanding the maps, this video shows the true location of Hy. 340's beginning and this video continues on that highway as far east as the eastern edge of Kahakuloa, indeed just past Julia's Famous Banana Bread Stand.
HI Hwy. 30 west (Honoapiilani Hwy.) from jct. with 380 to Lahaina at dusk on Maui, Hawaii (1 of 2)
This is part 1 of 2 showing the road, traffic and scenery along Hawaii State Hy. 30 westbound on Maui, the Honoapiilani Highway, from its junction with Hy. 380 to the outskirts of Lahaina where we then take the Lahaina Bypass and the video (in part 2) ends at the end of the Bypass. The date is January 15, 2017 and obviously the time of day is dusk. The highway number for the Lahaina Bypass is St. Route 3000 and we switch over to it towards the end of this part 1 and continue on the bypass in part 2.
scenic north Maui coastal highway east (to Wailuku) from Nakalele Blowhole to end of state highway
This shows the very scenic northwest Maui, HI coastal highway going eastbound towards Wailuku on January 15, 2017. As you can see, this is a really scenic drive and I highly recommend it if you like wild and remote areas. I do recommend using a small vehicle because there are points where it is or becomes 1 lane and I simply don't understand how you would be able to pass by if you had a Suburban for example. Anyway, the video begins just west of the Nakalele Blowhole at mile marker 38.5 of St. Hy. 30 and continues past mile marker 41.5 of that same highway to the sign saying end state highway. At that point, another highway, Hy. 340 takes you the rest of the way to Wailuku. But, all along the segment of the highway featured in this video, the highway signs and mile markers were all clearly posted as HI St. Hy. 30 and so according to what this video shows, the entire part of the highway shown in this video is Hawaii State Highway 30. So that is the reality on the ground. I was on State Highway 30 eastbound from the Nakalele Blowhole until the State Highway ends which is marked by a sign so stating--end state highway. The reason I am going into so much detail about this is that on all the maps, both Bing and Google, if you look, they all show this segment of the road as being Hy. 340 instead of Hy. 30. In fact, the internet maps show State Hy. 30 ending well before the Blowhole at Honokohau Bay and Hy. 340 taking up from there and going by the Blowhole, which is obviously incorrect. So both Bing and Google maps are wrong about this. I may investigate how to send them this video so they can correct their maps. So, whatever the proper name of the highway is, this is what it looks like. This is the northwest Maui coastal highway going eastbound from Nakalele Blowhole towards Wailuku until the end of the state highway where another highway takes over. I will be posting video from that point further east soon. As already stated and apart from all the technical map stuff, this really is a beautiful section of road and very scenic. For scenery this drive is hard to beat. And to repeat, because this is a very remote section of Maui, I really and highly recommend you take a smaller car because there are places where it is 1 lane and really hard to squeeze by. I simply don't understand how a Chevy Suburban could traverse this road and not get stuck somewhere. Smaller vehicles are far superior on the back side of Maui here. This is wild undeveloped country and while hard to access, is definitely worth taking the time to see.
HI Hwy. 340 (north Maui coast highway) east from HI St. Hwy. 30 to HI Hwy. 3400 (2 of 2)
This is part 2 of 2 showing the entire length of HI Hwy. 340 on the north shore of Maui, HI's west lobe going east bound, actually more south than east. The video (pt. 1) starts at the beginning of Hwy. 340 which happens to be the end of HI St. Hwy. 30 and continues from there until Hwy. 340 ends at the junction with HI Hwy. 3400. This highway is also known as the Kahekili Hwy. and as you can see is very remote and has a lot of 1 lane stretches and blind curves with tight clearances. As explained in part 1, Google and Bing maps are both wrong about where Hwy. 340 begins and where St. Hwy. 30 ends.
Driving Wild One Lane Kahekili Highway 340 on Maui Hawaii
Drove around the West Maui Mountains from Kihei to Kahului. Turns from beautiful beach level views to awesome sea cliffs. After Mokolea Point the road turns into one lane and almost 360 turns. You'll be advised that you are driving it at your own risk. The road itself was in great shape. A local told me to just take it slow and honk before the corners. I would highly recommend having some one with you to spot ahead while you're driving, especially if it's your first time. M was my eagle eyed navigator and camerawoman, and I salute her. Opaka paka!!! :)
Near the middle of the video we drive through the village of Kahakuloa. By the end of the one lane section my hands were sore from gripping the steering wheel. I saw a pile a wrecked vehicles which I presume were those that didn't make it to the end.
I have video from my helicopter flight of the road and cliffs from above that is also posted.

Here is the view we got to see everyday this week driving from Hawaii Kai to Kailua.
Hawaii- Maui Cliff road terror -HWY 340 part 2
So this is going back south on HWY 340 to HWY 30. We had no idea this INSTANTLY turned into a ONE lane road.. So what goes down, must come up. This is our drive back up to where my daughter and I started in my Part 1 video. I had assumed there would be a sign stating this was the dangerous part starting many one lane areas but no sign at all. So once we got to a good open space we turned around and proceeded to get back up to the road that was so dangerous. THANKFULLY we made it....
If you missed part 1 check it out here and try not to laugh and make fun of me. :-) ---------
Maui's North Road. A Natural Roller Coaster.
The north road on Maui is an undulating, curving, narrow, breathtaking road swinging around a rural coastline of the island. The road to Hana is the most famous road trip on the island, but the north road is shorter and arguably more intense ride through an epic landscape filled with amazing views and very narrow passageways. Enjoy this hypnotizing, single shot journey down the roller coaster that is the north road!
