Lands' End officially kicked off its Heritage Collection product launch and Heritage Tour on August 22, 2018, with a celebratory event at Milwaukee's North Point Lighthouse. The event, in partnership with North Point Lighthouse and the United States Lighthouse Society, celebrates Lands' End's ongoing commitment to lighthouse preservation by supporting the restoration of the North Point Lighthouse South Ravine Trail in Lake Park. This project will restore and connect the upper South Ravine Trail to the Stormwater Regenerative Conveyance System in the lower ravine, which is designed to capture storm water pollution runoff in the ravine before it reaches Bradford Beach and Lake Michigan.
Lands’ End donated $20,000 to help fund the South Ravine Trail restoration and other lighthouse initiatives. Dignitaries from Lands’ End, the United States Lighthouse Society and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett spoke during the event.
The Weather Channel broadcast two early morning segments from the top of the lighthouse tower.
This partnership marks the fourth Lands’ End lighthouse restoration project since 2014 as part of its Lighthouse Initiative.

Milwaukee is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin on Lake Michigan's western shore. It's known for its breweries, many of which offer tours chronicling its role in the beer industry. Overlooking the Menomonee River, the Harley-Davidson Museum displays classic motorcycles, including one of Elvis Presley’s. Nearby is the Milwaukee Public Museum, with its large-scale European Village and a recreation of old Milwaukee.
Milwaukee has historically been a major immigrant city. During the early 20th Century, German and Polish immigrants tended to dominate, and the city still strongly identifies with its German and, to a slightly lesser extent, Polish heritage. For part of the early 20th century German was even the main language of the city, and German names are still very common.
Milwaukee is home to some instantly recognized corporations such as Miller Brewing and Harley Davidson. Harley holds an enormous celebration on every fifth anniversary during Labor Day weekend attracting riders (and celebrity riders such as Jay Leno) by the millions to Milwaukee each time. The 115th anniversary was held in 2018.
Here’s the thing about Milwaukee: it’s cool, but for some reason it slips under the radar. The city’s reputation as a working man's town of brewskis, bowling alleys and polka halls still persists. But attractions like the Calatrava-designed art museum, badass Harley-Davidson Museum and stylish eating and shopping enclaves have turned Wisconsin's largest city into an unassumingly groovy place. In summertime, festivals let loose with revelry by the lake almost every weekend. And where else on the planet will you see racing sausages?
Getting around in Milwaukee is easy. Block numbers are consistent across the city, including most of the suburbs, starting roughly where the Milwaukee and Menominee rivers meet. All numbered streets run north-south, increasing in number as you head west from 1st Street. Most named streets go east-west.

Historian John Gurda explores how the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan spurred Milwaukee's growth. The settlers used rivers and Lake Michigan to transport grain, lumber, leather and beer, but water was just as important for play as it was for work. Gurda explains how the Milwaukee River became a destination for fun. Learn how the lower Milwaukee River was eventually reduced to an open sewer by 1900, with Lake Michigan suffering similar indignities. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern.

Off the hook: California king salmon rebounds after drought

Pacific Coast fishermen are reeling in big hauls of wild king salmon after years of weak harvests linked to severe drought and poor ocean conditions.
The chinook salmon boom is good news for anglers, seafood lovers and coastal fishing communities.
STORY-LINE:
Fishing off the California coast, Sarah Bates leans over the side of her boat and pulls out a long, silvery fish prized by anglers and seafood lovers: wild king salmon.
If you have a fish on the end of a string, it feels good every time, says Bates, a commercial troller based in San Francisco.
She says this year there have been a lot more fish than she had predicted.
California fishermen are reporting one of the best salmon fishing seasons in years, thanks to heavy rain and snow that ended the state's historic drought.
It's a sharp reversal for chinook salmon, also known as king salmon, an iconic species that helps sustain many Pacific Coast fishing communities.
Commercial salmon catches have so far surpassed official preseason forecasts by about 50 percent, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Harvests have been particularly strong in Morro Bay, Monterey and San Francisco, but weaker along California's northern coast.
The salmon rebound comes after three years of extremely low catches that resulted from poor ocean conditions and California's five-year drought, which drained the state's rivers and reservoirs.
Over the past several years, regulators imposed severe fishing restrictions to protect chinook salmon, and officials declared federal fishery disasters in 2018 to assist fishing communities in California, Oregon and Washington.
This year's adult salmon are the first class to benefit from record rainfall that filled California rivers and streams in early 2017, making it easier for juvenile chinook to migrate to the Pacific Ocean, where they grow into full-size fish.
Chinook salmon are also being helped by improved ocean conditions that have produced an abundance of anchovies, krill and other feed.
Several years ago, an El Nino event brought unusually warm water to the Pacific Coast and disrupted the marine ecosystem.
But now this year 2019 we're benefiting from that really dramatic end to the drought that we experienced just a few years ago, says Noah Oppenheim, who heads the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations.
The strong salmon season, which typically runs from May to October, is positive environmental news at a time of growing anxiety about climate change.
A United Nations report released this month warns that global warming threatens food supplies worldwide.
Most of the chinook salmon being caught now come from the Sacramento River and its tributaries, where they spawn.
Many were raised in state-run hatcheries, then released into rivers to swim to the ocean.
Harvests of chinook from rivers further north have not been strong.
Pier 45, where boats unload their catches, hasn't been this busy in many years.
On a recent morning, commercial fisherman Brand Little, who sells customers in the Lake Tahoe area, returned from four days of fishing with nearly 200 salmon weighing more than 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms).
The deckhand's happy, the captain's happy, the wife's family's happy, the customers at home that are gonna be eating this tomorrow are happy, Little says.
The salmon boom is also welcomed by sport fishermen and the boat operators that take them out to the ocean.

The Kenosha North Pier lighthouse or Kenosha Light is a lighthouse located near Kenosha in Kenosha County, Wisconsin.
A typical 'Lake Michigan red tower', it is a sibling to the Milwaukee Pierhead Light. This light was built in 1906 as a replacement for the old Kenosha Light.
The station was established in 1856. This pierhead light is one of a succession of lighthouses in this location, which were needed as the structures were destroyed by natural processes, or became obsolete as the piers were greatly extended.
Located on the north pier, it is listed in the United States Coast Guard light list and the United States Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System as the Kenosha Light. It currently is painted red, but the lighthouse also has been painted white in the past. The adjacent south pier and breakwater also had lighthouses, but now have cylindrical navigational lights. These included fog signal buildings and elevated iron catwalks, all of which have been removed.
In June 2008, the Kenosha Pierhead Lighthouse was deemed excess by the Coast Guard. Pursuant to the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, it was offered at no cost to eligible entities, including federal, state and local agencies, non-profit corporations, educational agencies, or community development organizations. A deadline of July 21 was created for qualified organizations to express interest. At this time, no organization came forward.
In 2011, the excess property was put up for auction and was purchased by John Burhani and Heather McGee. The lighthouse is currently being used as an art studio and gallery as its name now conveys; Kenosha Lighthouse Studio. Art shows, open to the public, can be found on the kenoshalighthousestudio.com website. The Kenosha Lighthouse Studio is open for individual dinners/meetings and other events.
