The Tundra Swan are back to Pea Island from the Arctic Circle.
This Year I am super excited because I was able to film close up shots of the Tundra Swan and other species of birds migrating along the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

Wild Horses at North Carolina Outer Banks

In late September, 2019, we drove to Knotts Island, located along the western shores of the Back Bay in northeastern North Carolina. From the marina, we met up with our local guide, who took us via small powered boat across the Back Bay to the remote community of Carova Beach, on the Outer Banks. Carova Beach can only be reached by boat or by 4x4 vehicles. The isolated community is surrounded by various National Wildlife Refuges, and it is here that one of the largest herds of wild Spanish Mustangs reside. Our guide showed us around the area by boat and by 4wd truck. We appreciated the fantastic scenery of the area as well as observing dozens of wild horses. We even briefly entered False Cape State Park in Virginia.

More than just a walk in the woods, the trail traces the diversity that is North Carolina. Experience ancient mountains and small Piedmont farms, coastal swamps and colonial towns, changing textile villages and barrier islands. Almost 700 miles of footpath are now completed. With temporary routes on backroads and bicycle paths, hikers can now follow the trail on an adventure across North Carolina.
Like the best gifts passed from one generation to the next, the trail is being made by hand. Each year, volunteers devote thousands of hours to planning and blazing the trail across the state step-by-step, milestone-by-milestone. You can help in creating this state treasure. Climbing Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: Travel Vlog
We didn't do much in the morning because it was so hot and humid so this video starts out with us enjoying some ice cream late in the day. After we decided to play tourist and check out some of the sights on the Outer Banks. We start off by visiting the famous Cape Hatteras lighthouse and taking a walk to the top. It was a great view up there and really puts into perspective how narrow the Outer Banks are and how far from the mainland they are. Then we went and checked out the North Pond interpretive trail at Pea Island. It was a nice spot and cool to see how they manage the area to provide habitat for the wildlife. Enjoy!

Magic in the Marsh at Rachel Carson Reserve
In mid October Ladybug and I went down to Atlantic Beach for the weekend with a couple of friends. On our first day paddling we went over to Carrot Island and Horse Island just across Taylor's Creek from the Beaufort waterfront. Once we turned into the inlet between Carrot Island and the Town Marsh, we came across a herd of about 25 of the feral horses in the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve. We watched them for about half an hour paddling to within about 100 yards of the closest ones. We then paddled out to the Knob of Carrot Island, around the point and then back to Beaufort.
Our second day we were going to paddle to Shackleford Banks to see the Wild Mustangs, but because of a strong nor east wind we had to scrap that plan and took our friends down to Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park. Ladybug and I had been down there and stayed last September, but it was nice to share the adventure with friends. While sitting on the beach we saw a group of about 12 dolphins swim past about 50 yards off shore.
It was a very good warmup for my upcomming trip out to Lookout Bight and the South Core Banks in just a couple of weeks.

As the United States Congress adjourns for the August summer break, legislators are heading home to their districts. This is the perfect opportunity to visit your elected officials and personally ask for their support of Senate bill (S.1557) and House of Representatives bill (H.R. 718).
These bills would set aside the consent decree and reinstate the National Park Service Interim Management Strategy for the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area.

Garter snake makes a hasty exit after laying across the trail sunning, notice how speedy the snake is compared to the glass lizard that I filmed moments later only 40yds up the trail. ALL Hatteras Island Wildlife is endangered nowadays from being labeled as potential predator and then killed by park personnel. Beach Access is a challenge during summertime at Cape Hatteras National Seashore & Piping Plover refuge, formerly a recreational area.
Bike Touring the Outer Banks - Day 1
Outer Banks by Bike, one families bicycle adventure: 6 days, 1 toddler, 2 bikes and 255 miles of two wheel bike packing! From Stafford, VA to Elizabeth NC, we drove the 4.5 hours down interstate 95 and braved the crazy Northern Virginia Traffic. Traveling with a toddler can interesting at times. Expecting them to relax in a vehicle for nearly 5 hours is asking a lot. Check out our video and blog about Day 1 of our Outer Banks by Bike series.

Hike at Jockey's Ridge State Park, Outer Banks, NC
Hike at Jockey's Ridge State Park on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The state park is made up of numerous large sand dunes that are continuously being reshaped by the wind. The dunes somewhat inhibit the growth of vegetation but there are other areas around the dunes with trees, shrubs and wildflowers. Various insects and birds can also he heard. The hike transverses some of the dunes and then makes it's way around to the sound side of the outer banks facing the mainland of North Carolina.
