Preparing to hike New Hampshire Appalachian Trail (2016)
We are leaving soon to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire! We're flying so we are packing for the flight as well as backpacking. I have put together my food packs and also have been working out on the treadmill to keep in shape between hikes. Videos of the hike coming soon!
First AT video:
Backpacking with kids - Lincoln Woods to Thirteen Falls Tentsite | White Mountains NH
Thirteen Falls Tentsite in the Pemi!
From Lincoln Woods Visitors Center, follow Lincoln Woods Trail to Franconia Brook Trail into the Pemigewasett Wilderness. Thirteen Falls Tentsite is about 8 miles with 1,000 feet elevation gain. These kids hiked it 4 hours each way, with minimal complaint. :-D
North and Middle Sugarloaf
We started this hike at the Twin Mountain Recreational Area using an unofficial trail that eventually joined the abandoned part of the Sugarloaf Trail that leads up to the col. We went to North Sugarloaf first, then went to Middle Sugarloaf. The views from both mountains were spectacular! Middle Sugarloaf is on 52WAV and it’s easy to see why. We had both summits to ourselves on a perfect day.
This video was filmed using the Canon HF G30 and Edited using Adobe CS6.

100th Anniversary of Carter Notch Hut
Carter Notch Hut—the oldest of AMC's eight high-mountain huts—is a destination fit for all walks of life. Plan your trip:
For the past 100 years Carter Notch Hut has seen it all: family traditions spanning generations; first-time overnight visitors eager for a taste of the wild; ambitious peak-baggers seeking claim of the nearby Wildcat and Carter Ranges. This modestly sized hut has a surprisingly rich history worthy of celebration, and, for the next generation of hearty adventurers, a destination to continue traditions or start new ones.

Hiking to the top of Mt little haystack, Mt Lincoln, Mt Lafayette in NH
Little Haystack Mountain is a mountain located in Grafton County, New Hampshire. The mountain is a peak on the Franconia Range of the White Mountains. Little Haystack is flanked to the north by Mount Lincoln and to the southwest by Mount Liberty.
The Appalachian Trail, a 2,170-mile (3,490 km) National Scenic Trail from Georgia to Maine, traverses Franconia Ridge, including Little Haystack.
Although well over 4,000 feet (1,200 m) in height, the Appalachian Mountain Club doesn't consider Little Haystack a four-thousand footer because it stands less than 200 ft (61 m) above the col on the ridge from Lincoln.
Mount Lincoln is a 5,089-foot-high mountain within the Franconia Range of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Lincoln is located between Little Haystack and Mount Lafayette. All three overlook Franconia Notch. The west side of Lincoln drains into the main stem of the Pemigewasset River. The east side drains into Lincoln Brook, thence into the Franconia Branch of the Pemigewasset.
The Appalachian Trail, a 2,170-mile (3,500-km) National Scenic Trail from Georgia to Maine, traverses Franconia Ridge, including Lincoln.
Mount Lafayette is a 5,249-foot (1,600 m)[1] mountain at the northern end of the Franconia Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, United States. It is located in the town of Franconia in Grafton County. It is on the New England Fifty Finest list of the most topographically prominent peaks in New England. The upper portion of the mountain is located in the alpine zone, an area where only small vegetation exists due to the harsh climate.

While camping the boys decided to have a little competition: who could make the best camping hot dog! Every thing was shot on the third day of our camping trip so we look a little rugged on camera, but hey we're camping!

This drive in the southwestern corner of Vermont is not a loop; you will need to double back to return to the start or step off the route where ever you choose. This drive also dips into northwestern Massachusetts to visit the delightful town of Williamstown. The Vermont towns of Manchester and Bennington are cherished for their classic New England beauty structures, and for their fine museums, dining and shopping. Take all or a part of the drive, which includes a very outdoorsy side trip to the pristine Somerset Reservoir. This drive has lots of digressions for dining and wining.
This loop drives starts and ends at the bustling, hippie-period-redux town of Brattleboro, with lots of good dining, fun shops, and a circus school, and travels on and around Route 9, also called the Molly Stark Byway. The drive passes through the Mount Snow ski area, which offers scenic chair life rides on the Bluebird Express daily during foliage season. You will pass through delightful towns like Newfane and Whitingham, and the views all along the way are guaranteed to be spectacular if the weather cooperates.
Lakes Bomoseen and St. Catherine Loop -- 55 miles
This drive is actually two intersecting loops, forming a figure eight, so you can shorten or lengthen the entire drive as you see fit. The loops travel around Lake Bomoseen, Birdseye Mountain, and Lake St. Catherine. A neat side trip takes you to Proctor, where you can learn about and marvel at the state’s historic marble quarrying industry. Also, tour a real castle!
Upper Connecticut River Valley Loop -- 115 miles
This loop is a large north-south oval in east-central Vermont, starting and ending in the beautiful town of Woodstock and passing through the Killington ski area. A small side trip takes you to the dramatic Quechee Gorge, also known as Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon, with fun souvenir shopping right nearby. You can shorten the drive easily by doing only pieces of the loop.
Stowe and Northern Mountains Loop -- 60 miles
This drive starts and ends at Stowe and its world-famous ski mountain, where, in the fall, you can take a gondola sky ride and see the fall foliage from above as you warm up the seat for wintertime skiers coming up next. Also near Stowe are two waterfalls, where adventurous people may hike or take photos or have a picnic. The drive also passes one of the state's parks, with a beautiful mountain lake. Prepare for classic images of Vermont’s Green Mountains. Also, a quick, 6-mile side-trip down Route 100, directly south of Stowe like a tail on this drive loop, is Waterbury Center, a sweet place, partly because of the presence of Cold Hollow Cider Mill.
