12 Days of Kindness: Local businesses shower this beloved Capreol matriarch with gifts
Today we are visiting Capreol to surprise a community matriarch who has dedicated thousands of hours to preserving the small town’s rich history.
Eileen Thompson is a staple in the town of Capreol.
She is a life-long member of the board of directors and a volunteer with the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre.
Having lived in this small railroad town for more than 60 years, Eileen is a wealth of historical knowledge and can tell you the name of just about every person in Capreol.
At the age of 82, Eileen just never stops.
Whether she’s curating museum exhibits, prepping artefacts for display, weeding the garden or volunteering at the Trinity United Church, Eileen always has a smile and a story to tell.
Eileen thinks Sudbury.com is visiting the railroad museum today to do a story on Christmas traditions in Capreol — she has no idea that local business owners have come together to shower her with gifts, including a really big surprise from Nordoors that will make Eileen's life a little easier.
Thank you to Nordoors, Lynn’s Place, Capreol Home Hardware and M&R Grill for making this act of kindness possible.

Canadian Pacific 9371 South leads CP 100 through Sudbury Yard (May 20, 2017)
CP 100 (Vancouver to Toronto) rolls through Sudbury yard on a bright and sunny morning. The was our first catch of the day on our family trip to Sudbury / Capreol to visit the Northern Ontario Railway Museum and Heritage Centre ( We waited around Romford Junction for a while and just barely missed CP 247 North into Sudbury, so we decided to move closer to the yard to hopefully find some action. Every previous visit I have made to Sudbury I ended up getting skunked! Shortly after arriving to the east end of the yard, we heard this long intermodal creep up on us, and I realized we were on the wrong side of the tracks for proper lighting, but had nowhere else to go that was nearby! So here's the best I could do filming in a shadow :)

Greater Sudbury
Greater Sudbury (2011 census population 160,274) is a city in Ontario, Canada, which was founded following the discovery of nickel ore by Tom Flanagan, a Canadian Pacific Railway blacksmith in 1883, when the transcontinental railway was near completion. Greater Sudbury was formed in 2001 by merging the cities and towns of the former Regional Municipality of Sudbury with several previously unincorporated geographic townships. It is the largest city in Northern Ontario by population and the 24th largest metropolitan area in Canada. By land area, it is the largest city in Ontario and the seventh largest municipality by area in Canada. Sudbury, as it is commonly known, is administratively separate and thus not part of any district, county, or regional municipality.
Sudbury has a humid continental climate with warm and often hot summers and long, cold, snowy winters. The population resides in an urban core and many smaller communities scattered around 300 lakes and among hills of rock blackened by historical smelting activity. Sudbury was once a major lumber centre and a world leader in nickel mining. Mining and related industries dominated the economy for much of the 20th century. The two major mining companies which shaped the history of Sudbury were Inco, now Vale, which employed more than 25% of the population by the 1970s, and Falconbridge, now Glencore Xstrata. Sudbury has since expanded from its resource-based economy to emerge as the major retail, economic, health and educational centre for Northeastern Ontario. Sudbury is also home to a large Franco-Ontarian population that influences its arts and culture.
