Glacier Bay National Park
Recorded June 21, 2007.
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is located in the southern part of Alaska west of Juneau. The park area was included in an International Biosphere Reserve in 1986 and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park covers 5,130 square miles. Most of the park is a designated wilderness area which covers 4,164 square miles of the park. No roads lead to the park and it is most easily reached by air travel. During some summers there are ferries to the small community of Gustavus or directly to the marina at Bartlett Cove. Despite the lack of roads, there are over 300,000 visitors per year, most on cruise ships. Glaciers descending from high snow capped mountains into the bay create spectacular displays of ice and iceberg formation. In the last century the bays most famous glacier was probably the Muir Glacier, at one time nearly 2 miles wide and about 265 feet tall. The Muir Glacier has receded and since the 1990s is no longer tidewater. Most visitors today see the Margerie and Lamplugh Glaciers.
This video covers my visit to the national park on the Sapphire Princess. Most of the video is of the Lamplugh Glacier, the John Hopkins Inlet and Margerie Glacier.

Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, United States - Best Travel Destination
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is a United States national park and preserve in the Alaska panhandle west of Juneau. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the area around Glacier Bay a national monument under the Antiquities Act on February 25, 1925. Subsequent to an expansion of the monument by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) enlarged the national monument by 523,000 acres (2116.5 km²) on December 2, 1980 and in the process created Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, with 57,000 additional acres (230.7 km²) of public land designated as national preserve to the immediate northwest of the park in order to protect a portion of the Alsek River and related fish and wildlife habitats while allowing sport hunting.
Juneau, Alaska
Alaska, known as America's last frontier and the North Star state, is home to frozen landscapes and towering mountain regions. Juneau, the state capital, is one of the southernmost Alaskan cities in a region known as the Inside Passage. Fjords, glaciers, and icebergs dominate the seascape, attracting glacier hikers, kayakers, explorers, whale watchers, and other thrill seekers. Many cruise lines offer Alaskan cruises and begin at Vancouver Island and go as far north as Glacier Bay National Park, giving tourists a view of the seas not seen from land. One of the most popular tourist areas in Juneau is the Mendenhall Glacier, known for it's ice caves and glacier trekking opportunities. A beautiful temperate rainforest surrounds Juneau, offering gorgeous hiking trails through the mountains, rainforests, and leading to many glaciers. The state capital is also known as one of the hotspots during the Gold Rush era and preserved its history along an area called the Perseverance Trail.
Alaska Glacial - Denali and the Inside Passage
Filmed over 2 weeks in Alaska's Denali National Park and the Inside Passage with the Nikon D800, edited in Panolapse. The Mt. McKinley summit revealed itself on a lucky day - a massive white peak blanketed in clouds and snow. Rivers of ice curve around the surrounding peaks.
Denali literally translates to The High One and is the highest peak in North America. Bears, moose, sheep, and caribou inhabit the base.
Further South, I board a cruise-ship in Alaska's Inside Passage into Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier. Glacier Bay is a surprisingly remote area, only reachable by sea or air and encompassed in emerald green waters from glacial melt. Hubbard Glacier is the largest coastal glacier in North America, a massive block of ice awash in a foggy seascape.

Icy Strait Point is a privately owned tourist destination just outside the small village of Hoonah, Alaska. It is located on Chichagof Island and is named after the nearby Icy Strait. Owned by Huna Totem Corporation, it is the only privately owned cruise destination in Alaska, as most stops are owned by the cities in which they are located. Huna Totem Corporation is owned by approximately 1,350 Alaskan Natives with aboriginal ties to Hoonah and the Glacier Bay area. Many of them are of the Tlingit people.
Location: 108 Cannery Road, Hoonah, Alaska
Description Icy Strait Point
=====================
The corporation's goal was to preserve the character of the local village and culture as much as possible, despite the influx of visitors, while still providing substantial help to local economic prospects. They have won several awards for doing this, including in 2008 a Travel to a Better World Award from National Geographic Traveler magazine, in 2012 a Global Vision Award from Travel + Leisure magazine, and in 2013 a finalist World Savers Award from Condé Nast Traveler magazine.
The site includes the 1930s Hoonah Packing Company facility, now converted into a museum, restaurant, and shops. In the view of two travel books, the cannery at the site has been beautifully restored. At the dock, traditionally garbed presenters offer a look at Huna Tlingit culture, and an indoor theatrical production along the same lines is also offered. All shops located there are owned by Alaskans. Alaska's Wildest Kitchen shows visitors the importance of salmon and subsistence fishing in the Tlingit culture and features a culinary instruction space where local residents demonstrate how to fillet salmon and halibut and turn them into burgers, spreads, casseroles, and grilled entrees. The local town of Hoonah is a mile's walk, and reveals contemporary Tlingit life. A 2014 USA Today article described the chance to experience Alaska Native culture in small villages such as Hoonah one of the ten reasons to visit the state.
For the most part, however, Icy Strait Point is a jumping-off point for shore excursions for the cruise passengers. The most well-known of these is the ZipRider zip-line that completes its run near the facility, which was constructed by the Huna Totem Corporation. Opening in May 2007, it measures 5,330 feet (1,620 m) and made claims to being the longest in the world, or later to at least being one of the longest and highest – at 1,330 feet (410 m) – in North America. It has been rated a statewide must do attraction by the Anchorage Daily News. The zip-line was also featured in September 2013 on Travel Channel's Ride-iculous show.
Another popular excursion is to search for coastal brown bears on the nearby Spasski River, where sightings happen but are not guaranteed. Other wildlife, such as bald eagles, are frequently seen in the area. Whale watching excursions are also conducted, as the facility is near the Point Adolphus feeding area for humpback whales. By 2011, attractions at and around Icy Strait Point had reached the level where they were getting non-cruise visitors as well.

Cruise - Hike - Camp in remote Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska
Near the northern end of the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is one of America's most magnificent national parks. Visiting Glacier Bay is like stepping back into the Little Ice Age—it's one of the few places in the world where you can approach such a variety of massive tidewater glaciers. Sounding like cannon fire, bergs the size of 10-story office buildings come crashing from the snout of a glacier, each cannon blast signifying another step in the glacier's steady retreat. The calving iceberg sends tons of water and spray skyward, propelling mini–tidal waves outward from the point of impact. Johns Hopkins Glacier calves so often and with such volume that large cruise ships can seldom come within 2 miles of its face.
ALASKA - USA Travel Guide | Around The World
Alaska is the 49th and largest state in the United States of America. Separated from the rest of the country, (the lower 48), by Canada, Alaska lies on the Arctic Circle. It is still the least densely populated state in the union and for a long time was home to the lowest population. America's final frontier is the size of California, Texas and Montana combined, making it huge in comparison to the rest of the states! Alaska is also home to the highest point in North America and all of the top ten highest mountains in the USA. Across the Bering Strait lies the country of Russia and the continent of Asia.
