Northern Rail Trail Aug 22 2016
From Lebanon to Mascoma Lake.
Northern Rail Trail | New England 2019 | Recumbent Trike Touring
Spanning 57.6 miles from Lebanon to Boscawen, the Northern Rail Trail is New Hampshire’s longest rail-trail conversion. Trail development began in 1996 after the state purchased the Boston and Maine Railroad’s dormant Northern Line. Built in 1847 by the Northern Railroad, the line formed a substantial portion of a Boston-to-Quebec route that was heavily traveled during the first half of the 20th century. While the state owns the rail corridor, local groups did most of the work to open the trail for year-round use in their respective counties from 2000 to 2014.
We enjoyed this trail a lot although you have to be ready to climb steadily if you are completing the southern section like we did. Excellent traditional rail trail with a crushed stone surface.
Northern Rail Trail
Northern RailTrail Adventure. my first overnight Adventure. Was testing things out for a much longer multi night bike trip. I think this was the hottest two days of the summer. not being able to see as much as most people, adds a little more excitement to the mix! other than that portion around Canaan New Hampshire the trail was very very nice mostly cinder.

Ashuelot Rail Trail Bike Ride Series # 5 Winchester NH to the Hinsdale NH Depot
Fifth in a series of video reports of various bike rides on the Ashuelot and Cheshire Rail Trails. This fifth one covers the journey on the Ashuelot Rail Trail from the Winchester NH to the Hinsdale NH Depot. This 5.5 mile ride one way is a great ride thru some heavy forested areas and snakes along the Ashuelot River most of the way. This ride also features 2 Depots from the early 20th century, and in fact the only standing depots left on the Ashuelot Rail Trail. The Hinsdale Depot is now a private home with access thru to the trail and Ashuelot Depot which is in need of restoration. A very easy scenic ride on a mountain bike.

NH Chronicle - Turning Rails into Trails
It's a part of the past that's easily forgotten: the network of steel rails that was once the backbone of New England's economy. Over the years many have been removed and in their place communities have put in trails for recreation. A New Hampshire author has created a comprehensive guide to all of the state's rail trails and he recently shared some of them with Adam Sexton.
