Walking Downtown - My Day in Spokane 4/7
After leaving the Davenport Hotel I walked around downtown Spokane for a few hours. I’d never had time to explore the area on my own before so I wanted to walk aimlessly just to see what I could see. This video documents part of my journey.
There were a few minor things on my shopping list, but I found nothing I really needed there so my only purchases – well, you’ll see them in the next video so I don’t want to get ahead of myself… wait for it.
In this video I saw sidewalk cafes, busses, lots of traffic, a street singer, and plenty of businesses. Lots of people too.
My impression of Spokane is that it is similar to other cities I’ve been in, albeit smaller than some. There weren’t enough benches and I got very tired while walking. At one point I wandered to the edge of the downtown area, and ended up next to the rescue mission with lots of homeless people milling about. Then I doubled back and walked another mile or more while looking for a shady bench to sit on.
I eventually discovered benches, so I must have wandered down the wrong streets. By contrast, Sherman Street in Coeur d’Alene has numerous benches and is a more hospitable environment in that respect. I think all cities should consider weary walker s when planning their downtown environment.
I didn’t see any plazas… just street after street with businesses. I guess the proximity to the Riverfront Park area takes care of that type of recreational need. I had been to Riverfront Park the year before, and didn’t want to expend all my energy on the trails there again, since I’d already seen it.
It is hard for me to get to Spokane because I have no car, and there’s no direct bus from Idaho into Washington. Our bus system stops short, in Post Falls (downtown area) and on the Washington state side, the bus extends as far as Liberty Lake, and no further. I live somewhere in between these two bus systems and it is really inconvenient because I must walk two and a half miles to get to the nearest bus stop (Post Falls).
I have ridden my bike to Liberty Lake and could then board a bus with my bike, but I haven’t tried that yet… and it seems like it would be a difficult endeavor… so when my friend offered to give me a ride into Spokane while she worked, I nearly jumped at the chance. Actually, she had to talk me into it because my natural inertia was making me wonder if it would just be too much for me. As it turned out, the hours of walking around downtown Spokane were extremely tiring for me, but I’m glad I did it because I got to experience what’s there and see the sights.
I unfortunately was too shy to stop and talk to the street musician so I don’t have his name to share with you. I enjoyed his music.

I did get shocked by how bad it got. I thought the end was a lot earlier. I put my own money back into the markets last week, so yes I was personally shocked as well. I think in these panic situations things can go even further. I hope they won't, they can. But the other thing that is very important to recognise is that things do get better after these extreme shocks as well and markets bounce back up, and therefore in a couple of weeks time it will all look like a very bad memory.

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Lothar Mentel, Chief Investment Officer of Octopus Investments:
Well you know we're managing assets for people who hope to retire on the money, and last week we probably lost them between five and seven percent of their money, so that weighs pretty heavily on one who has to take the investment decisions.

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Andre Flemings, financial worker:
I'd guess you know that the rates that the stock exchange has fallen has probably taken us back about four or five years now anyway. So I suppose looking over the long term it's probably not as bad as people think it is, but there's just so much uncertainty out there. We'll have to see what happens in the future.

STORYLINE:
Workers in Britain's finance industry were putting on a brave face after close of business on Friday as stock markets continued to plummet around the world, despite all efforts to slow the selling stampede.
I did get shocked by how bad it got. I thought the end was a lot earlier. I put my own money back into the markets last week, so yes I was personally shocked as well, finance worker Lothar Mentel said outside a London pub.
Things do get better after these extreme shocks as well and markets bounce back up, and therefore in a couple of weeks time it will all look like a very bad memory, he added.
Financial worker Andre Flemings suggested things weren't as bad as some people thought, saying the falls on the stock markets have probably taken us back about four or five years.
So I suppose looking over the long term it's probably not as bad as people think it is, but there's just so much uncertainty out there. We'll have to see what happens in the future, he added.
Kenneth Peterson, a financial worker at Europe Arab Bank, was also optimistic.
Money will always be made, he said. But maybe not to the degree that we did before.
On Friday, Britain's FTSE index ended below the 4,000 level for the first time in five years; Germany's DAX fell seven percent and France's CAC-40 finished down 7.7 percent.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 9.6 percent, also hitting a five-year low. For the week, the Nikkei lost nearly a quarter of its value.
Russia's market didn't even opened.
In the United States, the Dow Jones industrials, already down 21 percent for the week, dropped nearly 700 points more in the opening minutes but made up much of that fresh loss in the last hour of trading.
The index finished down 128 points for its worst week ever.
