S1 Ep16 - A Visit To Hexham, Northumberland
Hexham is a market town in Northumberland. It sits between Newcastle upon Tyne in the east and Carlisle to the west. This makes it a fantastic place to base yourself for daily explorations of the surrounding areas, such as the Lake District, the Pennines, Northumberland National Park, and the North Sea coastline.
Hexham itself has much to offer. It is steeped in history having the beautiful Abbey, the Moot Hall, the covered market, and the Old Gaol (which is now a museum), among other things. Then there are the walks you can take. One of the best and most stunning starts at Tyne Green Park, down alongside the river Tyne. This avenue of trees is simply the most stunning way to start/finish a walk I have ever had the pleasure to come across, it is a photographer's/artist's dream!
The town is well catered for with major supermarkets through to quirky independent retail outlets and plenty of eateries. The historic buildings and quaint cobbled street, along with the grounds of the abbey are well worth spending time walking around.
So if it is just a day visit or if you are planning to use Hexham as a base for your holiday, I can highly recommend it, it is just simply a beautiful town with an awful lot to offer a visitor.
I will be returning very soon to capture the awesome beauty of Autumn along the walk at Tyne Green Park, I would recommend any photographer/artist who is looking for something special for an Autumn piece to do likewise.

Section 2: Bywell to Hexham
In this section we start with Bywell Hall before exploring the history of Corbridge and surrounding area. We visit a lime kiln, a former pottery, a Medieval castle/fortified house, a Roman fortified town, as well as a Medieval church, its communal ovens, two peel towers, a 17th century bridge and the remains of a Roman bridge.
Not every section will be this jam packed with historical interest, some will celebrate the Northumbrian countryside... But every section will have at least one point of interest, most have more than one. So please subscribe so that you don't miss any of the next 50+ walks.

Hexham is a market town and civil parish in Northumberland, England, south of the River Tyne, and was the administrative centre for the Tynedale district from 1974 to 2009. Smaller towns and villages around Hexham include Corbridge, Riding Mill, Stocksfield and Wylam to the east, Acomb and Bellingham to the north, Allendale to the south and Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle to the west. Newcastle upon Tyne is about 25 miles (40 km) to the east.
Hexham Abbey originated as a monastery founded by Wilfrid in 674. The crypt of the original monastery survives, and incorporates many stones taken from nearby Roman ruins, probably Corbridge or Hadrian's Wall. The current Hexham Abbey dates largely from the 11th century onward, but was significantly rebuilt in the 19th century. Other notable buildings in the town include the Moot Hall, the covered market, and the Old Gaol.
Hexham's architectural landscape is dominated by Hexham Abbey. The current church largely dates from c. 1170–1250, in the Early English Gothic style of architecture. The choir, north and south transepts and the cloisters, where canons studied and meditated, date from this period. The east end was rebuilt in 1860. The abbey stands at the west end of the market place, which is home to the Shambles, a Grade II* covered market built in 1766 by Sir Walter Blackett.
At the east end of the market place stands the Moot Hall, a c15 gatehouse that was part of the defences of the town. The Moot Hall is a Grade I listed building, and was used as a courthouse until 1838. The Old Gaol, behind the Moot Hall on Hallgates, was one of the first purpose-built jails in England. It was built between 1330 and 1333 and is a Grade I listed Scheduled Monument. Hexham Library can be found in the Queen's Hall. It contains the Brough Local Studies Collection which is the second-largest local history collection in the county.
Hexham is bypassed to the north by the A69 road, linking it with Carlisle to the west and Newcastle to the east, which bypasses the original route, the A695. The town is served by Hexham railway station on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, also known as the Tyne Valley Line. The line — part of the UK publicly owned national rail network — was opened in 1838, and links the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear with Carlisle in Cumbria. The line follows the course of the River Tyne through Northumberland.

The English National Park Experience Collection - Northumberland
Nine English National Parks, including Northumberland, are working together to create an iconic collection of visitor experiences, designed to entice and inspire a new generation of international visitors, initially from Australian and German markets.
The National Parks have secured funding through the Visit England Discover England Fund. A government fund to deliver world-class bookable products, respond to consumer needs and market opportunities, drive growth in international tourism working with tour operators and the travel trade.
The Discover England’s National Parks programme is working with local businesses and other stakeholders until March 2019 to develop bookable experiences in our National Parks which have greater appeal to international audiences, and which can be packaged together to appeal the inbound travel trade.
These are immersive experiences which can only be appreciated from within our National Park landscapes; they will help consumers delve deeper into rural English life and connect with local people, history, culture and cuisine. Some of these will be experiences led by national park Rangers.
4 National Parks are developing a new approach to delivering Ranger-led experiences
Our research has identified Australia and Germany as our key target markets; these are currently our largest overseas audiences across all the National Parks and show strong growth potential.
These markets also align to the proposition we are offering through this project: a propensity to travel and motivated to visit the rural offer in England. Germany and Australia generate 30% of all international visits in English National Parks

The Boe Rigg Campsite in UHD - you can watch in 2160K - Cafe Self Catering Northumberland Kielder
Remote, wild, spacious and scenic are all terms rightly fitting The Boe Rigg, in Northumberland National Park a few miles from the market town of Bellingham.
Walking and cycling routes are all around here, along with a huge range of outdoor activities within a short drive including the high ropes, watersports and zipwires of Kielder Water and Forest. Also within driving distance are several famed north of England attractions such as Hadrian's Wall and Alnwick Castle, both under 40 miles, and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, under 50.
The Boe Rigg camp is a little wilder and rustic compared to other sites but that's camping, what we do have that some sites twice our size don't is a superb cafe & restaurant, bar, stunning views & relaxed attitude.
Our cafe is open from 8am during the main season where you can find delicious breakfasts, hot tea & coffee and free Wi-Fi. Our lunch time menu will run from midday untill 5pm when we will also be serving lighter bites, cakes and scones etc. Evening meals will be available from 6pm and last food orders being at 9pm. The bar is open throughout the day from midday and closes at 10pm
The Boe Rigg is the perfect place to use as a base to discover what Northumberland has to offer. On our doorstep we have Kielder Forest & Water and renowned darkest skies in the UK. With some of the greatest UK landscapes we have areas to enjoy walking, cycling, fishing and wild life watching.
Bellingham is just two miles away where you will find a well stocked Co-op, country store, newsagents, butchers & selection of pubs & cafe's. Its a relatively easy walk along the road but has a few corners & narrow sections to watch for, definitely not recommended in darkness.
Campfires and barbecues are both allowed.

Meet the suppliers of The Sill - Muckle Brewing
The first in series of short films introducing the suppliers of The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre.
We meet Tom and Nicola Smith; the couple behind Muckle Brewing, a small brewery based in Northumberland. All of their beers have been influenced by the local landscape and natural features that surround the brewery, located just outside of Haltwhistle.
