Norton Museum of Art West Palm Beach Florida #TravelTips
Founded in 1941, the Norton Museum of Art is recognized for its distinguished holdings in American, European, and Chinese art, and a continually expanding presence for Photography and Contemporary art. Its masterpieces of 19th century and 20th century European painting and sculpture include works by
Brancusi, Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso, and American works by Stuart Davis, Hopper, O'Keeffe, Pollock, and Sheeler.
The Norton presents special exhibitions, lectures, tours, and programs for adults and children throughout the year. In 2011, the Norton launched RAW (Recognition of Art by Women), featuring the work of a living female painter or sculptor and funded by the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund/MLDauray Arts Initiative. In 2012, the Norton established the biennial, international Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers in partnership with Beth Rudin DeWoody, in honor of her late father, Lewis Rudin.
In 2016, the Norton broke ground for a visionary expansion designed by architecture firm Foster + Partners, under the direction of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster. The project
reorients the Norton’s entrance to the main thoroughfare of South Dixie Highway, reestablishing the architectural order of the museum’s original 1941 design. New features include a 42,000-square-foot West Wing that doubles education space, and increases gallery space for the Norton’s renowned collection. The transformation of the Museum’s 6.3-acre campus will create a museum in a garden, featuring new, verdant spaces and a sculpture garden.
The Norton is located at 1451 S. Olive Ave. in West Palm Beach, Florida, and during construction is free to the public through July 15, 2018. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday noon to 5 p.m. and Thursday, noon to 9 p.m. Free parking and shuttle service is available at 1501 S. Dixie Highway. The Museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. The Museum will close for an extended period beginning July 16, 2018, and reopen Feb. 9, 2019. For additional information, please call (561) 832-5196, or visit norton.org.

At the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach we caught the traveling exhibition, “This Place: Israel and the West Bank Through Photography’s Lens.” What happens when twelve international photographers turn their lens to this corner of the world? A wondrous and haunting portrait.
Flagler Museum - norton museum west palm beach
This museum is housed in the spectacular 1902 mansion built by Henry Flagler as a gift for his bride, Mary Lily Keenan. The beaux-arts-styled Whitehall was one of the most modern houses of its era and quickly became the locus of the winter season in Palm Beach.

Grand Re-opening of the Norton Museum of Art l Art Loft 711 Segment
The Norton Museum of Art received a major renovation by esteemed architect Lord Norman Foster and Partners. The re-opening aimed to bring the original gallery built by Ralph Norton back into conversation with the new building. The museum features large-scale site-specific works of art that speak to the themes of nature running throughout the museum. With the renovation, the Norton can now showcase all five collecting areas on the first floor for the first time – Chinese Art, American Art, Photography, Contemporary Art, and European Art.

Visiting Norton Simon Museum
Visiting Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena was a surprising journey with paintings from some of my favorite Plein Air Painters. Vincent, Renoir, Bonnard, Carot, Boudin, and many others adorn the Impressionist gallery. Plan to spend some time and really take a look. A friendly gallery that allows photography is a win for sure. I heard there were other paintings there, but I had no time to see them...maybe next time:) They have an awesome Book Store!

In the Norton’s first gallery dedicated solely to photography, their debut exhibit explores the history of the medium through portraiture. Join us as we travel from the very beginnings of photography to the present, and see how the faces of the world have shaped the medium – and vice versa. We will also see how this new gallery speaks across centuries to mesh with the other exhibits in the grand re-opening of the museum. “WHO? A Brief History of Photography Through Portraiture” runs until November 26, 2019.

Norton Museum Art by Foster + Partners
The main entrance of the museum will be relocated to the west to create a welcoming presence on South Dixie Highway. It will feature The Heyman Plaza, a new entry forecourt covered with a 43-foot-high reflective canopy. A scalloped-shaped cutout in the canopy will accommodate an 80-year-old, 65-foot-tall banyan tree. The serene Michelle and Joseph Jacobs Reflecting Pool will greet visitors and mask traffic sounds from the Highway.
The 42,000-square-foot West Wing will be defined by four multi-story pavilions, clad in white pre-cast concrete panels, which contain:
• The new 210-seat, state-of-the-art Stiller Family Foundation Auditorium for films, lectures, and concerts
• The Jane and Leonard Korman Special Event Room
• The new Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Dining Pavilion, with garden-facing terrace seating in the John and Marjorie McGraw Garden Terrace
• In the center, will be the Ruth and Carl Shapiro Great Hall, a 3,600 square-foot sky-lit space with lounge seating, a coffee bar, a piano, book carts, temporary commissioned art installations, and a 280-square-foot window admitting light filtered by the banyan tree’s leaves and branches
Museum gallery space will increase by 12,000 square feet (35 percent) for showing its permanent collection and special exhibitions. The 4,000-square-foot William Randolph Hearst Education Center, with two new classrooms and a student gallery, will be more than one-and-a-half times the size of the existing education space. The feeling of a museum in a garden will be created by transforming a 20,000-square-foot paved area currently used for visitor parking into the Pamela and Robert B. Georgen Sculpture Garden.
