Protima Gauri Bedi at Nrityagram near Bangalore, in the old days
Seven years ago when she founded a sprawling dance village on the outskirts of Bangalore, not many gave her half a chance of succeeding. But today model turned Odissi dancer Protima Gauri Bedi's dream child Nrityagram has not only come of age but has nurtured and given birth to an ensemble of five accomplished dancers trained in the best ancient traditions and modern performing art forms.

Protima left Mumbai in 1989 to start the dance village called Nrityagram, the land was given on lease by state government and by 1990 the institution had taken root, inaugurated on May 11, 1990, by the then Prime Minister, V.P. Singh. The building started coming up soon after, designed by Gerard Da Cunha, following the vernacular architecture of the region. The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble made its New York debut in 1996 and received rave reviews.

Weekend ride to Hesaraghatta Lake
On a lazy sunday we decided to ride to Hesarghatta lake, which is hardly 20kms to the North of Peenya, Bangalore. The lake is supposed to have spread across 1000+ acres. But the state of the lake was not inspiring at all. But the ride was fantastic. We covered some lovely grasslands and some forests closest to Bangalore. Watch as we spend the entire day in less than 1000 bucks.

Features a stunning Odissi duet by Surupa Sen and Bijoyini Satpathy, senior dancers from the dance village Nrityagram, Bangalore. The striking feature of Odissi is its intimate relationship with temple sculptures as those seen in the Sun Temple of Konark. Indeed, Surupa and Bijoyini look like sculptures that have come alive. Surupa also explains the highlights of Odissi from the book Abhinaya Chandrika. In the second half we move on to the Classical dance form of Andhra Pradesh, Kuchipudi, performed by yet another stalwart in the field, Padmashree Shoba Naidu. The episode also features a semi-classical dance form of Andhra, Perini which features an all-male ensemble. Inspired by the Rammappa temple built by the Kakatiya dynasty about 700 years ago, Guru Nataraja Ramakrishna re-created this lost art form.
