Nunhead belongs to the family of districts parented by the London Borough of Southwark.
Nunhead has traditionally been a working-class area. The constituency has been a safe Labour seat since its inception in 1997 and as far back as 1945 falling under the Peckham ward, probably due to the relatively high number of poor people and those from ethnic minority communities at that time; two groups who traditionally tended to vote Labour.
The earliest mention of Nunhead we seem to be aware of came about in 1583 on a deed selling off a slice of the Camberwell manor. The deed listed the inclusion of estates at “Nunn-head”. Clearly something grisly took place here involving heads.
The Nunhead Cemetery of 1840 has over 250,000 people resting in peace there. Its got a mysterious kind of atmosphere and is very overgrown but is an attractive wilderness. After failed management and some ownership changes, the whole of it was simply abandoned and left to wrack and ruin.
There were two chapels in the Cemetery. World war all but wiped one of them out totally and it was then put out of its misery. This surviving Anglican one suffered serious abuse from a 1976 arson attack which hollowed out its inside and completely incinerated its roof. The state of the ruin today makes it conducive to music or theatrical performance.
Southwark Council purchased this 52-acre cemetery in 1975. It cost them £1. Despite some improvements, most of it is still in a wild state having been left untended for a long stretch.
There’s enough detailed information to assume that a nunnery existed here before falling fate to the Suppression of the Monasteries brought about by newly appointed Supreme Head of the Church in England, Henry VIII.
As the administrative and legal processes of this nunnery’s closure were rolled out around 1536, the feisty mother superior kicked up such mayhem over it she had her head removed and mounted on a pikestaff to display to everyone on the green for insubordination. The stout resistance she put forth against Henry’s men bought time for the sisters to duck out through underground caves into Peckham.
The old nun’s, head, is still perched there by the green till this very day. Obviously, I’m referring to the pub, of course. It’s been there in some form since 1745 and it is believed the district name took on the naming convention of the original inn when it was first constructed in the form of 'The Nuns Head'. It gradually advanced itself into the The Nunhead Tavern of 1934 before it closed for a spell and was rebuilt in a completely different mock Tudor style as The Old Nun’s Head in 2007.

Electric wheelchair rides. Gothic chapel at Nunhead cemetery, London. Outback B500.
Electric wheelchair rides. Walks and rides for wheelchair users and friends.
Nunhead cemetery is situated 4 miles south of London city center. Consecrated in 1840, the cemetery occupies 52 acres which rises to 200 feet above sea level at it's highest point, offering extensive views over the city of London and St Paul Cathedral.
Perhaps the most striking feature of the cemetery is the imposing Gothic chapel which towers over the underground crypt, the refurbishment of which was featured in the Channel 4, program Changing Tombs.
Unfortunately Nunhead fell victim to the 2nd world war which resulted in irreparable bomb damage to the small Nonconformist Mortuary Chapel, as a result it was finally demolished in the early 1950's. The crypt at the time was home to only four coffins which were transferred to the Crypt under the Anglican Chapel.
Nunhead contains many examples of magnificent monuments erected in memory of the most eminent citizens of the day, which contrast sharply with the small, simple headstones marking common, or public, burials. It's formal avenue of towering limes and the Gothic gloom of the original Victorian planting gives way to paths which recall the country lanes of a bygone era.

Kensal Green Cemetery, London
By the beginning of the 19th century, the business of burying the dead in London had become intolerable. The crypts under most churches together with their churchyards and other burial sites, were full to bursting, and the situation had also become a health hazard.
In 1825, George Frederick Carden had the idea for the establishment of public cemeteries away from the centre of London, and later petitioned the government for the establishment of these. He established the General Cemetery Company in 1830, and the first of what was to become the 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries, was opened in 1832 at Kensal Green. The General Cemetery Company still owns and manages this cemetery, which covers 72 acres.
Many famous names are buried here, and in 1939, a crematorium was opened, again with many well known names making their last journey to here.

Graveyard Beauty - Cemeteries of Tavistock, Devon, UK.
Exploring old churches and cemeteries is something I love to do. Some find them morbid creepy places but I feel quite the opposite. Churches and graveyards can tell you so much about the social history of the local area, and older ones in particular are filled with beautiful monuments and memorials, and are also often a haven for wildlife and insects.
This is a film I took of two cemeteries in Tavistock, Devon.
The old Victorian cemetery.
The main cemetery which is still used for interment.
The memorial for Harry Rogers who was 19 when he lost his life in the Titanic disaster.
Apologies for the dodgy camera work. I filmed it on an iPhone which is a bit of a pain to hold steady.
I had to replace the audio as most of it was filled with wind and traffic noise, even through neither was that loud at the time of recording.

Here is a short clip documenting the highlights of this years Open Day.
Gardens of Death... digging up the dirt on The London Cemeteries
Seems to me as if these cemeteries are located in some places of importance. Chapels, lodges, gates and crypts may already have been in place as part of previous structures when the cemeteries were established in the mid 1800's.
Highgate in particular seems to have been a structure that was in the hillside... some Arcadian villa or temple... Nunhead, said to be named after a tavern that was there may have been an Abbey and Brompton is set out like a cathedral or temple. Also old masonry from cathedrals and churches appears to have been used as funerary 'art'. More to come....
