OAXACA, MEXICO is our new FAVORITE!!
Oaxaca is extraordinary! We're going behind the scenes to learn about alebrijes, black pottery, & more!

This video is Part 2 of our Oaxaca, Mexico video series. In this travel vlog, we visit three special towns just outside of Oaxaca City:
1. San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca
2. San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca
3. Santo Tomás Jalieza, Oaxaca
First, we went to San Bartolo Coyotepec to see a live demonstration of traditional Oaxacan pottery making. We learn how the clay is harvested, molded, refined, carved, and cooked in underground ovens to create either black or brown pottery. The work that goes into each piece is astonishing!
Next, we drove to San Martin Tilcajete where we visited the famous alebrijes workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles. Disney Pixar actually came to this exact location while doing research for the movie Coco. It blew our minds to learn how laborious the process of making alebrijes is. People come to this workshop from all over the world to learn how to be a master at carving and painting Oaxaca alebrijes.
Before heading to our last stop, we enjoyed our tour guide’s “car bar” where we sampled some of their very own mezcal. Spoiler alert: Oaxacan Mezcal is SO GOOD!
Finally, we drove down the road to Santo Tomas Jalieza to learn how intricate, hand-woven textiles are made. We learned that it’s common for one piece to take 3, 7-hour days (21 hours total) to create just one!
It’s hard not to LOVE Oaxaca, Mexico after learning more about its culture. The patience, dedication, and love that all of these artisans have for their craft is inspiring. After spending one week in Oaxaca, we can safely say that it’s become one of our all-time favorite places in Mexico. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel to see our next Oaxaca video! Juchitán devastated by 8 2 magnitude quake in Mexico
The small, mostly indigenous town of Juchitán, in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca, was the hardest hit by a powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake that rumbled through south and central Mexico on Sept. 7.
Hundreds of residents in this town of nearly 75,000 in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, which connects Mexico to Central America, are sleeping outside their damaged homes, in fear of the hundreds of aftershocks.
More than 2,000 homes were severely damaged and the historic building housing City Hall collapsed.

IF YOU’RE NOT FROM MEXICO, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Huasteca. Americans tend to stick with the tried and true vacation spots they’ve heard of such as Cancun and Cabo when traveling to Mexico. More intrepid travelers might visit Oaxaca, Mexico City and San Miguel Allende. However, one of the most beautiful spots in the entire country is only a two-and-a-half hour drive from Tampico or a 12-hour drive from Houston. This secret oasis remains almost unknown to American tourism. It is called Huasteca, San Luis Potosí.
Today we continue to explore the area and bring you along for a REAL day of van life in Mexico with us! Best part?! We find our favourite spot in all of MEXICO!! After spending nearly 5 months traveling in our self converted sprinter van here it has been amazing to enjoy the diversity of the country. And while we love the beach the Cascadas De Tamul stole our hearts!
A video you may enjoy if you liked today's vlog:
DAILY VAN LIFE ROUTINE IN MEXICO
We have loved living in a van (self converted sprinter van) for the last year and a half and while we enjoy spending time in Canada it can get a little cold throughout the winter. So, we've decided to hit the road and drive across the continent to enjoy some warmer weather in Baja Mexico. If our last trip to this country taught us anything... it's to expect the unexpected!!
The Traveling Van Life in Mexico; hot, sticky, but oh so much fun!

STORYLINE
A street repaving project in the southern Mexican city of Oaxaca has turned up eleven skeletons and the foundations of a building thought to be a 16th-century convent.
Archaeologists have long suspected that the street ran over part of the Convent of San Pablo, the first Dominican convent in the old city, broken up like many church properties in Mexico, in the 1860s.
Archaeologist Enrique Fernandez said that researchers found ten sets of skeletal remains beneath what had once probably been chapels.
Fernandez said the remains from the early 1600s may belong to lay workers who wanted to be buried in the convent floors.
The unusual sight of the ancient foundations unearthed in the middle of a street near the main plaza of the Oaxacan capital, a popular tourist destination, attracted visitors and locals who stopped to watch the painstaking task as ancient remains were uncovered with trowels or brushes.
Luz Benitez, who was working at the site, said they had also unearthed what could possibly be a pre-Hispanic burial nearby in the same street.
A small bowl found near the bones was an indication of an offering, she said.
The tradition of centuries of people walking over their graves will continue; the site will probably be paved over again once the research has concluded.

ONLY ON AP Migrants take train after highway raids
(24 Apr 2019) The train known as The Beast is once again rumbling through the night loaded with people headed toward the U.S. border after a raid on a migrant caravan threatened to end the practice of massive highway marches through Mexico.
A long freight train loaded with about 300 to 400 migrants pulled out of the southern city of Ixtepec on Tuesday.
They sat atop rattling boxcars and clung precariously to ladders alongside the clanking couplings. Most were young men, along with a few dozen women and children.
Mothers clambered up the railings clutching their infants. Migrants displayed a Honduran flag from atop the train.
The train known in Spanish as La Bestia, which runs from the southern border state of Chiapas into neighboring Oaxaca and north into Gulf coast state Veracruz, carried migrants north for decades, despite its notorious dangers: People died or lost limbs falling from the train. Mexican authorities started raiding the trains to pull migrants off in mid-2014 and the number of Central Americans aboard the train fell to a smattering.
But about a week ago, a longtime migrant rights activist, the Rev. Alejandro Solalinde, noticed a change: Large numbers of migrants started getting off the train in Ixtepec, the Oaxaca town where his Brothers on the Road shelter is located.
Many had waited weeks for Mexican visas that never materialized, and simply decided to head north without papers.
Others were part of a 3,000-person migrant caravan that was broken up in a raid Monday by federal police and immigration agents on a highway east of Ixtepec.
With dozens of police and immigration checkpoints dotting the highways, many migrants now view the train as a safer, albeit still risky, way to reach the U.S. border.
On Monday federal police and agents detained 367 people, wrestling men, women and children into patrol trucks and vans and hauling them off, presumably to begin deportation proceedings.
Many other migrants abandoned the road and fled into the surrounding countryside.
The decision to turn to The Beast derives from several reasons, all related to the crackdown.
With throngs of police pickups and small immigration vans parked at checkpoints up and down the narrow waist of southern Mexico, hitchhiking, taking buses or walking is no longer an option.
Truckers, warned by the government that they could face fines, no longer give rides to the migrants as they did last year. Migrants are pulled off buses, and rounded up off the sides of highways when they stop to rest.
We cannot travel by bus because we do not have the papers to do it, said Rudi Margarita Montoya, the wife of a Honduran carpenter, who was perched atop a freight car with her young son and daughter and her husband.
It's not as if the migrants think the train is safe; they acknowledge the dangers of riding through the darkness perched high atop the freight cars.
Just like increased U.S. border protection, Mexico's increased enforcement efforts push migrants into using more dangerous means of travel.
Mexican policy has changed driving may on the train to board.
In late 2018 and early 2019 authorities were handing out humanitarian visas and processing asylum requests, they have now largely stopped doing so, instead making migrants wait weeks in the southern town of Mapastepec for visas that never seem to come.
The train was popular for years, back when caravan just meant small Holy Week demonstrations by migrants on the Guatemala-Mexico border.
Now, the train is popular once again.

Atlanta - City Video Guide
Atlanta, Georgia, is located near the Southern end of the Appalachian Mountains. It's known as the 'the city in a forest' thanks to its lush canopy of trees.
Most visitors know about the burning of Atlanta during the Civil War thanks to Gone with the Wind. The Atlanta History Center documents Civil War history, and another must-see attraction is the Martin Luther King Junior Historic Site.
Enjoy the green city spaces at Centennial Olympic Park near the city's downtown, or in midtown's Piedmont Park. The best views of all are found at nearby Stone Mountain Park, the world's largest exposed granite monolith.
The World of Coca Cola offers guided tours, and kids will love the Zoo Atlanta and Georgia Aquarium, where you can even swim with whale sharks in the huge Ocean Voyager tank.
In the evening, there are vintage emporiums and bars to explore at the diverse Little Five Points neighborhood, while the opulent, 1920s-style Fabulous Fox Theater is a prime example of the elegant architecture and Southern grace that Atlanta is known for.

What NOT to do in LIMA, PERU
If you're planning to visit Lima, Peru, there are some important things you should know. [Peru travel 2019]
►The travel credit card we use:
After traveling in Mexico for about 15 months, we decided it was time to visit another Spanish-speaking country. When some airplane tickets to Lima, Peru went on sale, we couldn't pass up the opportunity! That's what originally brought us to Lima where we experienced a bit of culture shock and made a few mistakes during our trip.
In this Lima 2019 vlog, we decided to share the biggest mistakes we think travelers are likely to make in the city. In this travel vlog, we talk about the biggest mistakes you can make in Lima, including:
- A common Lima candy you shouldn't take back on the plane;
- The local currency and how you can pay;
- The price of transportation in Lima and which is the best option to choose;
- A local beverage you should be very careful with;
- The tipping culture and what's expected;
- A big mistake you can make with Peruvian food;
- What the seasons are like in Peru;
- Heating and cooling in Lima homes;
- What the driving is like in the city;
- A big mistake you can make while walking around Lima;
- And more!
Some of these mistakes we made ourselves, and others are details about Peru or traveling in Lima that you might easily overlook. Even if you ask lots of questions and do tons of research before traveling to Lima, not knowing these helpful facts might make your trip less desirable.
We hope this information and our tips help you in your Lima, Peru 2019 travels! Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments.
ABOUT US (MADDIE & JORDAN)
In January 2018, we sold everything we owned in the US (except our husky Laska & what fit in our tiny, tangerine Prius C3) to travel the world—starting with Mexico. Since then, we've been making travel videos about our life in Mexico and the new experiences we encounter while traveling the world.
