Welcome to Dublin!
Like me before my trip, you might be asking yourself “what’s the appeal outside of the bars and all that Guinness?”. well firstly, this is a young person’s city; Dublin’s boasts Europe’s youngest population, where some 50% of people living here are under the age of 25. So yes, bars, nightlife, parties and Guinness are popular, though definitely not exclusive to this demographic. And while Dublin certainly does dabauchery famously, it’s only when you visit this old and beautiful city that you really see how the Republic of Ireland’s capital is way more than hedonistic haven for hen do’s and lad’s weekends away. Just take a mosey down the cobbled streets and it’s like nothing has changed over the last hundred odd years. The greatest thing about my time Dublin was realising that this city is one with a rich and colourful history. There’s a banging food scene, and of course, there are plenty of things to see and do during your trip. Coming up, I’m gonna tell you about transport, money and some of my favorite things to do, but first, let’s take a look at getting here.
The airport is 10km outside Dublin and is the only international airport serving the city. From here, your choices for transport to the centre are bus or a taxi, as there’s no train station at the airport.
Dublin airport’s Aircoach will take you to various locations across the city, so make sure you know which stop is nearest your hotel.
Dublin is compact, which means if you’re staying in the city centre, you can pretty much walk to everything. However, if you want to get around quickly, hop on a tram. The Lewes is Dublin’s tram system; there are two lines, red and green. And the walk from the end of the green line to the red line is about 15 minutes. Don’t forget to always tap in and tap out, otherwise you’ll get charged the maximum possible fare.
If you plan on making multiple journeys, we recommend getting a Leap Card. It’s Dublin’s public transport top-up smart card and you can get them at the airport or at local shops, wherever you see the sign.
Dublin’s nightlife is legendary, and Temple Bar is the centre of it all. Yes, it’s where all the tourists go, but Temple Bar is packed with pubs, bars, live music and clubs. If you want to have a great night out in Dublin, this is where to go.
Written by Irish monks around 800AD, the Book is a decorated version of the Paul Gospels that’s kept at the centre of an exhibition in Trinity College. Just don’t expect a photo, as no cameras are allowed near the book, no even ours! However, our highlight has to be the Long Room, holding around 200,000 books, it’s a vast collection that seems to go on and on and on and on and on and on and on, forever.
Next is Kilmainham Gaol, a former Irish prison that held many of the revolutionaries of the past, in particular, the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. Abandoned in 1924 and restored in the 1960s, it now serves as a museum where you can learn all about the history of Irish independence. The gaol is 3 and a half kilometers out of the city centre, so you’ll need to get the Luas or the bus here. Tickets are available online, you book your timeslot and the website recommends arriving 15 minutes before your tour is due to start. Because the museum can only take a limited number of people at a time, booking ahead is the only way to guarantee entry on the day.

Royal visit to Cork by the King & Queen of the Redheads
Queen Mairín Rua ní Aodha and King Alan Hayes made a royal visit to Cork city and county this week in anticipation of the upcoming Irish Redhead Convention which takes place in Crosshaven from August 23 - 25.
The ginger royalty were greeted in Cork Airport and proudly displayed their rebel Cork passports. They then followed in the footsteps of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on a visit to the Old English Market. Here they were greeted by chairperson of the traders association and butcher Tom Durcan and Pat O'Connell of K O'Connell Fish Merchants. To commemorate her royal visit the queen unveiled a plaque and were presented with a number of gifts including a copy of the Coast of Cork by Joleen Cronin and Durcan's award winning spiced beef.
The King and Queen then visited Fota Wildlife Park, also taking in a trip around the park on the big red bus and visiting Bosco, Ireland's favourite redhead.
The exciting day was finished with a royal drink of Jameson, Ginger and Lime at the world famous Cronin's Pub in Crosshaven.
Special thanks to all who made this remarkable visit possible including Aidan O'Connor and all the staff at Cork International Airport, Aer Lingus, The Gathering Ireland, The English Market and traders Tom Durcan, Pat O'Connell and Rebecca Harte. John Bowe of Irish Distillers Ltd, Denis Cronin and all at Cronin's Pub, Crosshaven. Tom McSweeney for his excellent report and coverage of the event. Film shot and edited by Joleen Cronin. Respond Housing Agency Launch St John's College Older Person Accommodation Project
Respond Housing Agency launches St John's College Older Person Accommodation Project in Waterford city, Ireland.
Respond! was founded in Waterford city in the early 1980s from Franciscan roots and membership. At the time there was a need for housing for both young families and older persons in the city. The legal incorporation of Respond! as a company limited by guarantee took place in 1982, and as an approved housing association by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government in 1984.
Respond!’s first ever housing scheme was in Larchville, Waterford on a piece of land kindly set aside by Waterford City Council. This development contained 15 houses for older persons, along with a community room. Named Francis Court, it was officially opened on October 4th 1983 and was jointly funded by Waterford City Council and Respond! who depended on the very kind generosity of the people of Waterford at that time and throughout the 1980s, through all sorts of community collections and fundraising. The South Eastern Health Board also donated money in order to furnish the houses.
Several housing schemes were developed for young families by Respond! Housing Association over the next few years using a financial model initiated by the organisation itself, namely the Agency Agreement Model whereby young couples transferred their mortgages to Respond! Housing Association which undertook to provide design and project management for fixed-price new houses for them. This was in advance of any model of state-financed housing for families through housing associations and was very successful/
Respond! Housing Association was invited by the respective Ministers for the Environment to pioneer the development of the Capital Assistance Scheme from 1984 and the Capital Loan and Subsidy Scheme (then known as the Rental Subsidy Scheme) from 1991.
Some significant housing schemes built by Respond! Housing Association around this time include the following:
Shalom House, Youghal (an ecumenical regeneration scheme for older persons in partnership with Friends of Respond!, Youghal)
Coopers Place, Ennis (a housing development for older persons in partnership with Friends of Respond!, Ennis)
Lady Lane, Waterford (the redevelopment of the Sisters of Charity Convent, in association with the Care of the Aged Committee, into apartments for older persons, along with a Day Centre)
Spring Gardens, Waterford (an integrated development of housing for families, for older persons and for Cura. This was the first Rental Subsidy Scheme in Ireland in 1991)
Westlands, Wexford (on land kindly donated by a local solicitor, James O’ Connor. Respond! Housing Association provided integrated houisng for families and for older persons as well as a Day Centre)
