Oboke and Kazura Bridge, Shikoku 四国・徳島 大歩危とかずら橋
Oboke and Kazura Bridge area, Tokushima Prefecture in Shikoku, is a Japan destination rated by Michelin Green Guide. Oboke is deep in the mountain, and was remote from everywhere in the old days, becoming a place where survivors of ancient wars hid.
These days, it’s quite easy to access Oboke by train. It takes 50 minutes from Kochi, about 2 hours from Tokushima or Takamatsu. But be careful, as usual there are only a few express trains a day. After you arrive at Oboke Station, a local bus brings you to the main destinations in this area.
My channel, Japan Silhouette, features beautiful scenery, traditional culture, Origami arrangement, and the warm heart of the Japanese people.
I also visit other countries and record my impression about them, perhaps from a Japanese perspective.

JAPANESE ADVENTURES: Iya Valley, Naruto, & More! Shikoku, Japan Part 2!
Hi, everyone! This is the second half of our trip around Shikoku. It was just as amazing as the first! We went to the eastern side of Iya Valley to check out two of the last three vine bridges there! We passed through a Scarecrow Village on the way! The citizens of the village joined together and made countless scarecrows, each one set up to mimic the citizens doing their jobs, or standing around town together in little groups. They're equal parts creepy and adorable!
The largest vine bridge is Iya Kazurabashi. That one is the main one and very touristy. 90% of people go there, but we chose to see the other two vine bridges (Oku-Iya Kazurabashi) and had them all to ourselves! It was beautiful. We were surrounded by this amazing nature. Crystal clear water, trees, and mountains.
All too soon, we had to leave. We slept at a hostel in Takamatsu and headed to Naruto the next morning. Naruto is famous for their whirlpools. We went to Onaruto Bridge to check them out. Unfortunately, they were really calm when we were there. I recommend going during the Spring Tides when they're at their biggest!

The Iya Valley (祖谷渓谷 Iya Keikoku) region in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan is a scenic area known for its dramatic mountain valleys and old vine bridges. The Iya Valley and the inner parts of Shikoku have historically been remote and difficult to enter, making them a favorite retreat for refugees and defeated Heike warriors although access has improved in recent years.
Shin-Iya Onsen Hotel Kazurabashi
This hotel is located one of Japan's three major least visited regions. The sky-high open-air bath is accessed by a cable car. It provides local dishes which are popular amongst guests.
The hotel has three outdoor baths, one for each gender as well as a mixed gender bath in which you can watch nice views out over the Iya Valley. The baths are found high up on the mountainside above the hotel. The can be accessed by a short cable car from the main building.
Daytime Hours: 10:00 to 16:00
Daytime Admission: 1200 yen
Overnight Stay: from 14,000 yen per person including 2 meals

The Iya Valley is usually divided into two areas. Nishi Iya (West Iya) located around the entrance to the valley and is slightly more developed and more accessible as there are relatively frequent buses to some of the major attractions. Oku Iya (Inner Iya, also called Higashi Iya or East Iya) lies further back into the valley so is difficult to reach without a rental car or other means of private transportation.
Access Information
A rental car is recommended to visit the area.
1. To Nishi Iya (West Iya)
*From Awa Ikeda Station to Kubo, take a bus and transfer to another bus bound for Nijukazurabashi or Mount Tsurugi. Get off at the Nijukazurabashi bus stop.
The one way journey will take 2 hours with a cost of 1790 yen. There are only 4 buses a day. Moreover buses from Kubo to the bridge operate only on weekends and holidays from April to November.
2. To Oku Iya (Inner Iya)
Rental car stores are available around Oboke and Awa Ikeda Stations.
A rental car is recommended, particularly for visiting the less traveled Oku Iya area. Note: The roads are very narrow and have frequent blind curves, which make driving both hazardous and slow.
Our stay at Iya Onsen; Iya Valley, Oboke (Tattoo Friendly Onsen) | Crazy Cat Paigey
Apologies for how short this vlog is (I was enjoying myself too much to film!)
I had a wonderful stay in Iya Onsen in Iya Valley, Oboke.
We also had very tasty udon at Boke Mart which is right by Oboke train station.
Onsen we stayed at -
As far as we know, they have no tattoo policy there!
Oboke is a beautiful place and I strongly suggest visiting there if you’re in Japan. You can go there with a Japan Rail Pass (Make sure to reserve your seats!)

Nishi-Awa Tourism Area
Within the embrace of lofty mountains, time stands still.
Nishi-Awa is a pure land of unchanging patterns and human warmth.
When you arrive here, you’re struck by a sense of unexplored seclusion. It’s a place where one valley leads into another, disappearing into the mist. Little hamlets with patches of farmland cling to the steep mountainsides. There’s nowhere else in Japan like it.
Pathways wind their way right beside the farmhouses of these close-knit communities, where total isolation and limited resources have fostered indissoluble bonds and a spirit of cooperation. From the Heian period, the people of Nishi-Awa have welcomed strangers warmly, accepting them as hospitably as one of their own.
The unique culture that arose on these high mountain slopes fascinated scholar of eastern culture Alex Kerr, who saw the valleys of Iya as a Japanese Shangri-La. Today, many visitors from around the world come to experience its peaceful charm.
Iya, Japan: Cold, Wet & Truly Breathtaking
This wasn't supposed to be my first Japan video but there's something wrong with the Takamatsu video I painstakingly put together and it won't upload to Youtube. So you join my adventure from our second stop - Iya in the South of Japan, up in the Mountains.

■TripNotes
Spot 1: Iya Valley; Kazurabashi Bridge
Miyoshi is Japan's well-kept secret where the beautiful nature has been left untouched. Cross the Kazurabashi suspension bridge that overlooks the mountain stream of Iya River to experience Japan's raw nature. This thrilling swaying bridge is made from the Hardy kiwi plant (actinidia arguta). Feel the adventure as you navigate through the magnificent nature.
Spot 2: Naruto Strait
World's biggest whirlpools occur in Seto Inland Sea's Naruto Strait. Watch this phenomenon from the Onaruto Bridge that connects Naruto of Tokushima prefecture and Awaji Island of Hyogo prefecture or take a ride on the tide watching cruise. A famous Japanese anime is based on the Naruto Strait Whirlpools.
The whirlpools appear during high and low tides, but they are most powerful during the low tides of Spring and Autumn.
Food: Iya Soba
Iya Soba is the local specialty of the Iya area in Miyoshi.
Made from secluded Iya's pure waters and local soba flour, it is known for the noodles, which are thicker and shorter than normal soba. When you take a bite, the aroma of the soba fills your mouth and the simple texture makes the it very enjoyable to eat.
