Exploring Central Florida | RV Road Trip
Are you ready to jump into your RV and hit up Florida? Florida is one of the most popular RV destinations in the United States. With thousands of miles of shoreline, Disney World, and the Keyes, what more can you want? While the summers can be hot, Florida is a great RV destination year-round.
From the white sandy beaches of Jacksonville Beach to the many amusement parks in Orlando to the hot dance clubs in Miami, Florida has something for everyone. With more RV parks and campgrounds than you can count, Florida is the ultimate destination for RVers.
No Florida RV trip with kids is complete without a stop at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Encompassing over 27,000 acres, Disney World is one of the most popular theme parks in the world. First opened in 1971, Disney World has grown to include four theme parks, two water parks, 27 themed resort hotels, and lots of other entertainment activities. Well loved by people of all ages, a day or a week of Disney World is something that you will remember for the rest of your life. Whether it’s singing along to “It’s a Small World” in the Magic Kingdom or going on safari in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you’ll find something to keep you coming back to this magical place for years to come.

If you want the true Disney experience then you’ll want to stay at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. Large RV campsites are available with a privacy-enhancing landscape, full hookups, and cable TV. The resort offers unique activities like horseback riding, archery, and canoeing. Nearby Tropical Palms RV Resort is just minutes from all the themes in Orlando. With large RV sites and awesome amenities, you might not even want to leave the park! There’s also plenty of places nearby to park your RV.
Just 45 minutes east of Orlando, you’ll find Florida’s famed Space Coast. Consisting of 72 miles of coastline perfect for surfing, sunbathing, and lots of beachfront happy hours, you want to make sure the Space Coast is on your Florida RV trip itinerary. Stretching from Titusville down to Palm Bay, you’ll discover that Florida’s Space Coast is quite diverse. Start your holiday at Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral where the brave men before you step foot before embarking to space. Melbourne is home to charming art galleries, upscale boutiques, and lots of great dining and beaches. The area is home to 33 miles of unspoiled beaches available day and night. For the nature lovers, spend a few days in Titusville where you can see over 300 bird species in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
Crystal Lake RV Park in Mims has large RV sites with full hookups, a swimming pool, three-acre lake, and WiFi. Kennedy Space Center and the Canaveral National Seashore is just a short drive away. Palm Shores RV Park in Melbourne has 36 campsites with full hookups that can accommodate even the biggest RVs.
The Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. This vast National Park consists of 1.5 million acres of wetland throughout South Florida and is a designated World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. Many rare and endangered species like the manatee, American crocodile and the Florida panther call this park home. You can explore much of the park by tour boat, kayak, or bike. Popular nature spotting trails include the Anhinga Trail and the 99-mile Wilderness Waterway. Don’t miss the panoramic views atop the 65-foot observation tower in Shark Valley.
The Florida Keyes are the jewel of the Cape. With lush white sandy beaches, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and more umbrella drinks that you can drink in one night, Key West is the place you want to go if you want a little fun in the tropical sun. Key West is more than a charming, colorful party town, it has heaps of outdoor activities like scuba diving and snorkeling, kayaking, art galleries, and tons of amazing restaurants and bars. Don’t forget to take a Key Lime Pie-making class to make this town’s famous desert.

Long Key State Park, Florida Campsite Photos
Favorite Sites: 5, 15, 46, 54.
The Spanish named this island Cayo Vivora or Rattlesnake Key because its shape resembles a snake with its jaws open. In the early 20th century, Long Key was the site of a luxurious fishing resort that was destroyed during the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Today, visitors can explore this island by canoeing through a chain of lagoons or hiking two land-based trails. The Golden Orb Trail leads visitors through five natural communities to an observation tower that provides a panoramic view of the island and its profusion of plant and animal life. Some of the best bonefishing in the Keys is found here. Full-facility campsites overlook the Atlantic Ocean.

Paynes Prairie Preserve – Gainesville Florida – Exploratory day trip May 07, 2015
A nice park with some interesting features. Thanks goes to the ranger at the main entrance (am) who suggested I check out the La Chua trail area. I probably would not have visited that area if he hadn't suggested it. I'm going to research and see if there is a best season to see the bison and horses. Would be cool to see them in the wild...

Shark Valley Pt. 2 - South Florida Everglades
Guaranteed Alligator sighting! Get close to nature and experience the Everglades ecosystem. The largest tropical park in the United States is Everglades National Park in south Florida. Shark valley part 2 shows an amazing wonderland of flora and fauna. Continuing from part 1, we experienced many large alligators, blue herons and numerous types of birds. Great place for family and adventurous people. We hiked this 16 mile asphalt road, other options are cycling, or tram. We recommend taking tram to the tower and then walking back to the visitors center. Bring lots of water and a sun-umbrella if you plan to backpack the park. Everglades National Park covers 1,542,526 acres in Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Collier Counties. The park has two entrance stations. One at Homestead and one at Shark Valley. We chose to explore the expansive everglade system from the Shark Valley location.
If you'r looking for day hiking the Homestead area close to the Everglades National Park has numerous trail to explore.
You’ll take US 41 to reach Shark Valley wether you are coming from the east coast or west coast. The route is very remote with opportunities for unique recreational experiences along the way including airboat rides and alligator wrestling.
If you plan to hike the 15 mile Shark Valley trail, set aside an entire day. To beat the heat, try to start at sunrise by parking along side of US 41 and hike into the park. This is typical and accepted for hikers and bikers as the visitor center parking lot does not open until 8:30. We saw a huge array of flora and fauna in the short 100 yards between US 41 and the visitor center. In fact, If you don’t have much time and just want to see a great variety of wildlife, just hike in from US41. Once you reach the visitor’s center, enjoy the educational displays and call it a day. That is if you’re pressed for time.
Guided tram tours and bicycle rentals are also available. During our visit, adult tram tickets were $25 and bike rentals were $9 / hour.
We highly recommend hiking the entire loop for all the sights you’ll see. Big alligators, baby alligators, blue herons, and white herons were abundant. Reaching the observation tower for lunch and a mid day break was the high point. What a place to eat lunch and rest. The cool breeze and solitude were rejuvenating.
Make sure you check the weather forecast and plan for storms appropriately. The fact that Florida is the lightning capital of the country should be taken seriously. The trail is wide open with no concealment along the 7.5 miles between the visitor center and observation tower.
When we completed our hike in mid November 2018, restrooms at the observation tower were closed for renovation. There are portable restrooms; however, there is no water available. Make sure you pack enough water for the whole trip. Remember, the trail is concrete and wide open with no shade under the relentless Florida sun. Pack what you think should be enough water, and then throw in another liter.
There was so much to see and show during our adventure, that we had to present it in a two episode series. This weeks episode will showcase the sites and sounds we encountered on our return to the visitor center from the observation tower.
Let us know if you have any questions below in the comments. We’d love to hear about your visit as well. Hope to see you on the trail….

AMELIA ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE from a drones eye 4-5-16
Amelia Island Light is simply a Southern Bell. It’s alluring ceramic white beauty is beholding while viewing her grace! Located on an Island, endured from the days of pirates, it still stands 67 feet strong from 1839. This sentinel is the oldest, and still operational lighthouse in Florida, while being the westernmost beacon on the east coast of the United States!
Ron and I biked up to this North Florida gem, while taking in the ocean views along the way! Only about 45 minutes up from Jacksonville, we arrived wanting to capture a different and special views not normally seen of Amelia! I think we accomplished that and more! Here is this house from a different light! A true Castle of America!

WTD #5. Big Cypress National Preserve & South Beach Miami
Welcome back to Wheeling to Dream! Episode 5 brings plenty of fun in the Everglades, as well as a family outing to South Beach, Miami, Florida.
We were lucky enough to get to watch an air show, right from South Beach! We got to see the Blue Angels, the Coast Guard, and many other aircraft perform. South Beach was pretty crowded, but we made the best of it.
We stayed in Midway Campground, right inside the Big Cypress National Preserve, right in the center of the Florida Everglades!
We did plenty of hiking, jeeping and wandering about through the swamp. #Swamp life! We saw tons of wildlife such as alligators! Some pretty large ones too!
Make sure to stay tuned in for our next episode in the Florida Keys!
We would love if you followed along with us on our journey!
