Darjeeling Observatory Hill & Mahakal Temple : My 1st Day in Darjeeling
Exploring the world.
As the name suggests, this place on a hill top is one of the greatest spots in Darjeeling to observe the panoramic views of the mountains and it also has a temple at the summit called the Mahakal Temple. The Observatory Hill is located at the Mall area and is encircled at its bottom by the Mall Road. As you walk along the Mall road, you will see this steep hill rising on one side.
However, it's not too high. It takes about 15 minutes of uphill walk to reach to the top. While the walk may be tiring, the rewards are awesome. As you take the Mall road from the right side of Chowrasta Mall, about 100 yards away you will find flights of stairs that lead towards the Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple. There is a large signboard indicating the pathway.

Observatory Hill - A Place Surrounded by History And Amenities
One Day Trips from Teesta Bazaar || Mahakal Temple, Darjeeling || West Bengal
Observatory Hill is a hill near Chowrasta square, or The Mall as it is popularly known, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. Views of snow-clad peaks, including Mount Kanchenjunga, are visible from the Observatory Hill. The Bhutia Busty monastery was originally located here. Now the hill has the temple of Mahakal. Two important arteries of the town, Nehru Road and Bhanubhakta Sarani, meet at Chowrasta. Another school of thought suggests that the presence of the megalithic core to have been a place of worship of the Rongs, representing a sacred location of the classic Long Chok (erect stones) type. The term 'Dotsug' was thus a literal translation of 'Long Chok'
Rising abruptly from Chowrasta is the hilltop. Situated atop is the ancient temple of Mahakal, a form of Lord Shiva.[1] There is a cave sacred to worshippers in the temple. In Sanskrit, the word Durjay Ling, means Shiva of invincible prowess, who rules the Himalayas. There is a suggestion that the name Darjeeling could have emanated from this name. The place where the Mahakal Temple stands was once occupied by the Buddhist monastery. It is still a place of great sanctity for the Bhutias. Bells ring in the midst of fluttering flags, which are used to pray in the shrine. Monkeys are seen in plenty at the Observatory Hill.
Terry Hodgkinson Visits Darjeeling, India Part 3 of 4
Terry Hodgkinson continues his wandering through Darjeeling aka Queen of the Hills
While in Darjeeling the guys I took on tour, John and Randy decided to enroll in a mountaineering course. This gave me time spend with my friend Tenzin Choden who is a Tibetan Buddhist Monk. Tenzin Choden who is shown in this video clip with me, takes me to visit his childhood school where he studied before becoming a monk. After a tour of the school he then takes me to Observatory Hill where we walk around having many conversations regarding a great many things. Observatory hill is a sacred spot for both Buddhists and Hindus. Tenzin Choden was born in Darjeeling and his family still lives here. He comes back to visit every October otherwise he lives in the south of India in the state of Karnataka where his monetary is located. It was a real pleasure to spend a few days with Tezin Choden who is the embodiment of a simple yet knowledgeable Buddhist monk. - Terry Hodgkinson
ABOUT OBSERVATORY HILL and DARJEELING:
Observatory Hill is a hill near Chowrasta square, or The Mall as it is popularly known, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. Magnificent views of snow-clad peaks, including Mount Kanchenjunga. The Bhutia Busty Monastery was originally located here. The Bhutia Busty monastery, the oldest monastery in Darjeeling, was first located on Observatory Hill. It was built in 1765 by Lama Dorje-Rinzing. The name Darjeeling is believed to have originated when monks of the monastery referred to the region as Dorje-ling, meaning the land of the thunderbolt. Another school of thought believes that it was named after Dorje-Rinzing. The monastery was sacked by a Gorkha invasion in 1815. It was rebuilt in 1861 and was moved to its present location in Bhutia Busty in 1879. Now the hill has the temple of Mahakal.
