Source Springs of the Mississippi River
The explorer Schoolcraft determined the source of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca in 1832. Now part of Itasca State Park, this lake is fed by springs visited by the French scientist Joseph Nicollet in 1836, and mapped by Jacob Brower in the 1890s. The springs were finally GPS'ed by the Minnesota Spring Inventory in 2018, funded by an LCCMR grant.

History Is Lunch: Timothy T. Isbell, The Mississippi Gulf Coast
On September 12, 2018, photojournalist Timothy T. Isbell presented The Mississippi Gulf Coast as part of the History Is Lunch series.
Isbell's new book of the same name uses more than two hundred photographs to illustrate the distinctive character of each town along the waterfront, the historic places, traditional coast cuisine, and more. Passing from the western part of the coast to the east, The Mississippi Gulf Coast features Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi, d'Iberville, Ocean Springs, Gautier, Pascagoula, and Moss Point. Isbell provides a brief history of the area, from the first settlers to the waves of immigrants who have helped shape the character and culture of the region, and a reflection of the current state of the Gulf Coast.
During the earliest days following Hurricane Katrina, Isbell was sent to document the grim aftermath. Seeing damage everywhere, he became overwhelmed by the destruction and wanted to see images of hope and recovery. He determined to show the “true Mississippi Gulf Coast,” an area known for its natural beauty and spirit, and the photographs are a testament to renewal in the face of adversity.
Timothy T. Isbell lives in Gulfport. He was a member of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom of the Sun Herald of Biloxi. He has been inducted into the University of Southern Mississippi School of Mass Communication and Journalism Hall of Fame and is a Knight Foundation/National Endowment of the Arts grant recipient for his photographic study of the Vietnamese people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He is author and photographer of Gettysburg: Sentinels of Stone; Shiloh and Corinth: Sentinels of Stone; and Vicksburg: Sentinels of Stone, all published by University Press of Mississippi.
History Is Lunch is a weekly lecture series of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History that explores different aspects of the state's past. The hour-long programs are held in the Craig H.
