Hakone, 箱根町, Hakone-machi is a town in Ashigarashimo District in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
Hakone is the location of a noted Shinto shrine, the Hakone Gongen, which is mentioned in Heian period literature. During the Gempei War, Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed at this shrine for victory over his enemies, after his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama, which was is located in neighboring Manazuru. As with the rest of Sagami Province, the area came under the control of the late Hōjō clan of Odawara during the Sengoku period. After the start of the Edo period, Hakone-juku was a post station on the Tōkaidō highway connecting Edo with Kyoto. It was also the site of a major barrier and official checkpoint on the route known as the Hakone Checkpoint (箱根関所 Hakone sekisho), which formed the border of the Kantō region. Under the Tokugawa shogunate, all travellers entering and leaving Edo along the Tōkaidō were stopped here by officials. Their travel permits and baggage were examined to enforce Tokugawa laws that restricted the travel of women and weapons.
Hakone, Owakudani and the Black Eggs - Japan
Ōwakudani (大涌谷 lit. Great Boiling Valley?) is a volcanic valley with active sulphur vents and hot springs in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is a popular tourist site for its scenic views, volcanic activity, and especially, Kuro-tamago (黒卵 lit. black egg) — a local specialty of eggs hard-boiled in the hot springs. The boiled eggs turn black and smell slightly sulphuric; consuming the eggs is said to increase longevity. Eating one is said to add seven years to your life.
Hakone is the location of a noted Shinto shrine, the Hakone Gongen, which is mentioned in Heian period literature. During the Gempei War, Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed at this shrine for victory over his enemies, after his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama, which was fought in neighboring Manazuru. As with the rest of Sagami Province, the area came under the control of the late Hōjō clan of Odawara during the Sengoku period. After the start of the Edo period, Hakone-juku was a post station on the Tōkaidō highway connecting Edo with Kyoto. It was also the site of a major barrier and official checkpoint on the route known as the Hakone Checkpoint (箱根関所 Hakone sekisho?), which formed the border of the Kantō region. Under the Tokugawa shogunate, all travellers entering and leaving Edo along the Tōkaidō were stopped here by officials. Their travel permits and baggage were examined to enforce Tokugawa laws that restricted the travel of women and weapons.
After the start of the Meiji Restoration, Hakone became a part of the short-lived Ashigara Prefecture before becoming part of Ashigarashimo District in Kanagawa prefecture in August 1876. Hakone attained town status in 1889. The imperial household established the summer Hakone Imperial Villa close to the lake.
After merger with five neighboring towns and villages in September 1956, it reached its present boundaries.
The economy of Hakone is strongly dominated by the tourist industry. Hakone is noted for its onsen hot spring resorts, which attract both Japanese and international visitors due to its proximity to the greater Tokyo metropolis and to Mount Fuji. Sights include the volcanically active Owakudani geysers and Hakone Shrine on the shore of the lake, as well as the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands. In April the cherry blossoms (sakura) and in autumn the Miscanthus sinensis (susuki) are noted sights.
Hakone has a number of art museums, including the Hakone Open-Air Museum and Pola Museum of Art.
Major events include the annual Hakone Ekiden, a long distance collegiate foot race, held at the New Year, which runs from Tokyo to Hakone and back over two days, partly in commemoration of the couriers who ran the Tōkaidō road.
One famous hotel in Hakone is the historic Fujiya Hotel in Miyanoshita, which was patronized by noted literary figures, politicians and foreign dignitaries in the Meiji and Taishō and early Shōwa periods.

Samurai Battle Fest - Siege of Hachigata Castle, Yorii 寄居北條まつり
The Siege of Hachigata Castle in 1590 is merely a footnote in the grand campaign of Toyotomi Hideyoshi to teach the haughty Hojo Clan of Odawara to respect his authority as the strongest leader in medieval Japan. However, in the town of Yorii they make it a big deal with a battle festival where they fire makeshift canons and have people dressed in armor battling each other with soft-tipped spears.
It's a fun festival held every Spring. In the past it seems it was in April now it seems the second Sunday of May but don't quote me on that. Definitely worth checking out though!

Teaching Japan Workshop - Part Four
Three Takes on the Beginning: The Myth, Historiography and Archaeology of Early Japan
Charlotte Eubanks
According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, Japan's earliest mytho-histories composed around the 8th century, the Japanese archipelago was created by two gods, dipping a heavenly spear into the ocean and dripping brine to create the islands that they then peopled with human beings, a sort of chosen race descended from divine seed. Nineteenth and Twentieth century archaeological accounts are more sober, pointing to cultural links between proto-Japanese and a range of nomadic hunter-gatherer cultures across the Eurasian steppes and into the Pacific islands. Early Chinese accounts are by far the most brutal, with envoy's descriptions from the Fifth and Sixth centuries describing a barbaric, uncivilized, superstitious, and smelly people who ate with their bare hands, sat on the floor, and did not mourn their dead 'properly.'
The goal of this workshop is to examine each of these accounts of Japan's origins, placing them in their socio-historical context and exploring the sort of cultural work that each explanation was meant to do. In so doing, we will analyze the (religious, literary, and historiographical) project of making history and engage with a number of primary documents suitable for teaching in a variety of K-12 classroom settings.
Charlotte Eubanks is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature, Japanese, and Asian Studies at Penn State. She studies ritualistic and communal aspects of textual engagement, with a focus on Japanese literature from the medieval period to the present. Her first book, entitled Miracles of Book and Body: Buddhist Textual Culture and Medieval Japan (University of California Press, 2011), examines the relationship between human body and sacred text in the Buddhist literary tradition, focusing on reading as a performance-based act which bridges the text-flesh barrier. Her second book project (Archival Memory: Art, Performance, and Visual Culture in Trans-War Japan) moves to the modern period to examine links between visual art, human rights and testimonial narrative. In addition to her research, she teaches a wide ranges of courses in Comparative Literature and Asian Studies and is currently Director of Undergraduate Studies for Asian Studies. Before becoming a professor, she worked as a junior high school teacher in Japan and interned with the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, leading several K-12 workshops and two summer study tours to Japan.
