Highway through a Building Story ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Osaka's Gate Tower Building is an amazing sight to see because ... well, how should I put this? A highway goes through the building.
It literally does, and there is a story behind it.
In this episode, John not only goes inside to see where the elevator takes him, he also drives through it -- in a Lotus Seven. We'll also go up the Umeda Sky Building and catch some fantastic angles of the city, skyline and Gate Tower Building.
THE STORY:
Here it is from the building owner.
It’s basically a land rights dispute with a sort of happy ending.
The property was owned by a business (coal and wood company) since the early Meiji era but when business declined, so did the buildings in the 1970s. The area was approved to be redeveloped in 1983 but the property holder refused to give up the land, even though new building permits had been refused to him. The highway corporation and the property owner negotiated for 5 years and what you see today is their compromise. Highways usually buy the land they’re on but a new law in 1989 allowed the possibility of having two owners on the same spot, really meant for highways to go underground but hey – let’s get creative.
The highway is the legal tenant of floors 5 through 7.
The current building tenant on the other floors is TKP.
WHERE IS THE BUILDING WITH THE HIGHWAY THROUGH IT?
Google map:
Closest Station: JR Fukushima Station
It's one stop away from JR Osaka Station on the Loop Line.
Special thank you to TKP and the building owners for allowing me to film inside the building.

Umeda Sky Building - Osaka - Letters from Japan
The Umeda Sky Building is located in North Osaka and is one of Osaka’s most well-known landmarks.
Getting there can be confusing. The easiest and most direct route is to first arrive at Osaka Station (JR Train) or Umeda Station (local Subway). Exit out of any north exit that leads to the Grand Front Shopping complex.
There is an underground walkway that leads straight to the Sky Building. Look for this walkway between the first two Grand Front buildings. (Watch the video for the walkway's specific location.)

UMEDA SKY BUILDING EXPERIENCE | OSAKA JAPAN
HIGHWAY THROUGH A BUILDING | Osaka Japan | Sights, and a drive through! 2019 Aersion in Japan
Things to do in Osaka 2019 : see the Highway going through a building! On an Osaka travel day, we drive our Toyota 86 through a tower and find the highway exit in Umeda that goes inside the gate tower building.
Now, the highway through a building has a story as to why it exists. Many years ago, the original land owner's business was failing and they decided to build a building, but the government already approved the construction of the Hanshin expressway over the same land! So a feud ensued for 5 years before the compromise was reached: build a building with floors 5-7 being just a hole, and the highway company rents those floors and builds the highway straight through the building!
Amazing sight to see while travelling in Osaka Japan just minutes from the station!

Umeda Sky Building - Osaka, Japan
Umeda Sky Building is one of the best public viewing platforms in downtown Osaka. From the Floating Garden Observatory, you get a clear view of any direction over Osaka. The elevator trip up was the coolest part. Best time to go is right before sunset.
