CAPITOL REEF National Park - Fruita campground, Capitol Gorge + Cohab Canyon Trail
We just knew we HAD to stop by Capitol Reef on our 2017 road trip!
Was it worth it?
Absolutely!
- Camping at the peaceful Fruita Campground. (***Read below.)
- Historic settlements.
- Massive petroglyph panel.
- Exploring canyons and slot canyons with our kids - CAPITOL GORGE and COHAB CANYON (our absolute favorite!!!).
- One of the best places in the US for star gazing.
- Spectacular scenic drives and hikes.
- Not as crowded as other national parks.
We had a great time in Capitol Reef!
***CORRECTION: As of early 2018, FRUITA CAMPGROUND is NO LONGER on a first-come first-serve basis (which was the case in 2017 when we stayed here). The park has since moved to a reservation system, and as of right now, campsites can be reserved ahead of time from March through October.

Great Western ATV Trail on the Fishlake National Forest in Utah
The Great Western Trail is a trail system that extends from Canada to Mexico. This video highlights a small section of the Great Western Trail starting at Riley Springs Trailhead, which is just above the town of Fremont, Utah. The Trail passes by the Elkhorn campground, then it travels onto the East end of Thousand Lake Mountain. The trail provides views of Capital Reef National Park, Cathedral Valley, and the Henry Mountains.
The trail continues off the South side of Thousand Lake Mountain, descending into the town of Torrey, and ends up at the Bicknell Bottoms trailhead. This section of trail is open to vehicles 50 inches or less in width, so ATVs and some smaller side-by-sides can be on the trail. Pick up a free travel map at any Ranger District office on the Fishlake National Forest. For this section of trail, you should plan for about a full day, including the shuttle and the ride.

5-Days Thru Utah's Mighty 5 National Parks
Last September, we hiked through Utah's 'Mighty 5' National Parks, starting from the East in Colorado and going through (in order) Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, and finishing off in Las Vegas.

Gooseberry & Paiute OHV Trails Salina, UT
This was a short scouting trip of the Gooseberry, Arapeen, & Paiute Trail systems in SE Utah, centered on Salina, just off of I-70. Coming from Hanksville, we drove through Capitol Reef National Park and then headed north on 2-lane highways to Salina, where we stayed at Butch Cassidy RV Park, where you can ride to the trails directly from your park site! The Paiute Trail has special routes through towns for non-street-legal vehicles, but street legal rigs can use any road except for the interstate highways. The Gooseberry & Arapeen trail systems are east of town and quickly get you from desert to above the tree line with some amazing views! Side trips to the Fremont Indian State Park, Big Rock Candy Mountain, and the Tushar Mountains in Marysvale highlighted this trip for us - all of these side trips are accessible on the Paiute Trail!

Barracks Trail near Zion National Park Utah, East Fork Virgin River
Trail starts near Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park and ends at Mt. Carmel Juntion (Utah Hwy 89). Conditions are highly variable and trails may be impassable. Always travel in a group and be prepared to extract yourself and survive. Conditions can be harsh and there is no cell service in the area.
Pleasant Creek Crossing at Capitol Reef
Pleasant Creek was quite pleasant. Not enough time to do the whole trail, just checking it out, lots of sand. Video taken by Alexhawaii12. Cruising in The Bull.
ATVing in Central Utah
Chad and Ria are in Central Utah showing us a glimpse of what is available on the Paiute Trail System. They ride the Max Reid Trail that leaves from the Fremont Indian State Park. This is a great place to bring the family and go ATVing.

Cathedral Valley Loop Offroad Trail - Utah
Cathedral Valley Scenic Backway takes you into the heart of the Cathedral District, a land filled with natural wonder. A title like that is something you think you should be hearing in Paris, but instead, you are right next to Capitol Reef National Park, a wonder in its own right. With prominent natural landmarks named Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Moon, and Jericho Wall you always question if the beauty is overhyped. It is not. For the off-road crowd, this trail is must do for simply for the visual stimulating factor of it. There will not be any challenging wheeling, but with over 57 miles of sensory overload - you have to do it.
