Located at the southern tip of Lake Geneva, surrounded by the Jura mountains and the Alps, Geneva offers exceptional views of the majestic Mont Blanc. The city that houses the United Nations headquarters and the Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva is made up of some 41 per cent foreigners from 190 different nationalities. With more than 200,000 inhabitants, Geneva is the second most populated city in Switzerland after Zurich.
Today, we invite you to discover this beautiful city, the home of watchmaking, where philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born one evening in June 1712. After having checked into our rooms at the Hotel Metropole facing the lake, we offer you a walk in the heart of the English garden which houses the famous flower clock.
Another emblem of the city is the Rue du Rhône where the most beautiful brands have taken up residence. Bucherer will then reveal some of its finest jewellery pieces. A little further up, we will enter the new Artya boutique, before taking our first gourmet break, at the Café Perche in the heart of the Parc des Eaux vives. With 22,000 m2 of retail space, the
Manor Geneva is Switzerland's second largest store, and the largest in terms of revenue. We will stroll the aisles, looking for luxury perfumes and haute couture chocolates. We spotlight a brand of unique and customisable bags called The Collector, before ending our evening at Metropole's MET Rooftop Lounge. But for now, let's drop our bags at the Metropole Hotel. We could not dream of a better location. On one side, the English Garden and its flower clock, with the iconic stream of water in the background, on the other, the Rue du Rhône, heaven on earth for all lovers of luxury shopping. A legendary building dating back to 1854, with an elegant design, from the entrance hall to the Mirror Bar, to the some 127 contemporary-style rooms and suites ranging in size from 15 to 80 square metres.
Outside, Gusto's terrace is often busy for both a drink and a taste of Roman-inspired, healthy cuisine based on seasonal produce. In the summer season, more and more people are getting closer to the water jet every day, hoping to receive a few fresh drops of water. Standing at 140 metres tall, it has become over time a true emblem of Geneva. Its story begins in 1886. At the time, the hydraulic plant which distributed the driving force of the Rhône to the craftsmen and watchmakers of Geneva, was forced to create an open evacuation of the pressurised water, when the workshops closed at night. The place generated so much enthusiasm that it never stopped working. In 1891, the City of Geneva even decided to promote the Water Fountain to the rank of tourist attraction by installing it at the end of the Pier des Eaux-vives, in the heart of the harbour. 500 is the number of litres of water thrown into the air every second.12,000, on the other hand, is the number of flowers that make up this magnificent clock located under the Ferris wheel, and near the Patek Philippe boutique, creator of the very first Swiss wristwatch in 1868. It was a ladies piece, ordered at the time by Countess Koscowicz of Hungary. Another must-see house is that of Swiss jeweller and watchmaker Bucherer. With around thirty boutiques worldwide, they are one of the main players in the sector. An exceptional house located at number 45 on a street that is often compared to Fifth Avenue in New York, or even to Place Vendôme in Paris. A luxury kingdom par excellence, Rue du Rhône is the second most expensive street in Switzerland, behind Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. A little further up, rue Neuve-du-Molard, at number 22, is a brand new boutique that has just opened, that of watchmaker Yvan Arpa. In the windows are watches that are for the most part unique and above all extraordinary. What is amazing is this bezel which was literally forged with a Tesla coil and a Faraday cage. The shop is also in the image of the designer: totally unique…!

Geneva faces the chair
The faces of the monument of the Palace of Nations face the Broken Chair of Geneva. This is a monumental sculpture in wood by the Swiss artist Daniel Berset, constructed by the carpenter Louis Genève. It is constructed of 5.5 tons of wood and is 12 metres (39 feet) high. It depicts a giant chair with a broken leg and stands across the street from the Palace of Nations, in Geneva. It symbolises opposition to land mines and cluster bombs, and acts as a reminder to politicians and others visiting Geneva.

Meyrin (French pronunciation: [mɛʁɛ̃]) is a municipality of the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland.

Geneva: Switzerland

Geneva Travel guide - Switzerland Charming Atmosphere
Geneva Travel guide - Switzerland Charming Atmosphere
Geneva is Switzerland's second-most populous city and is one of the world's major centers of international diplomacy, having served as the site of the initial headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Although the United Nations is now headquartered in New York, the organization still retains a large presence in Geneva at the Palais des Nations and many of its sister/child organizations, such as the World Health Organization and ILO.
Geneva was an independent republic from at least the 16th century until it became a Swiss Canton on 31 Dec 1813. This is a point of some pride to the Genevois, who still refer to their Canton as the République et Canton de Genève. A favorite festival is the yearly celebration of the Escalade, which commemorates a failed attempt in 1602 by the forces of the Dukes of Savoy to invade the city by climbing and otherwise breaching the city walls.
Geneva is still a very proud city. Some find it downright stuffy, although there is quite a bit more life to be found if you look under the surface, especially if you speak some French. Geneva is officially a French-speaking city, and the vast majority of the population speak French. All advertisements, information, and signs are in French.
Geneva, like most cities in Switzerland, is a marvel of public transportation efficiency. Transports Publics Genevois provides frequent bus, tram, 'mouette' (boat), and suburban train service to within a block or two of most locations in the city and canton. Public transport runs from around 4am until shortly after midnight. There are some night busses/trams available - but check your route in advance. By law anybody staying in a Geneva hotel/hostel is entitled to a free daily travel pass.
Districts of Geneva :
Old Town (vieille ville) and St. Gervais
Paquis
Plainpalais
Hopital
Eaux-Vives
The old-town is hilly and cobbled but can be easily visited on foot starting anywhere around the tour boat dock on Lake Geneva, or if you come from the Cornavin station, walk down to the Bel-Air island and continue straight on uphill to the old town. Crossing the bridge (Pont du Mont Blanc), you'll get to the English Garden with the famous flower clock and a sculpted bronze water fountain. Then you can cross the street (Quai de General Guisan) and go up the hill (on Place du Port and Rue de la Fontaine) and up the long stairway passage and end up behind Saint Peter's Cathedral. After visiting the cathedral, which is Geneva's best-known landmark, you exit the courtyard and be right in front of the Geneva City Hall. From there you can easily walk down to the Bastions Park where you will find the famous Reformation Wall memorial. This park is very quiet and romantic, especially at the beginning of the fall season, when the leaves start falling.
Geneva has a huge number of restaurants for a city its size, and the international community means there's more variety than you'll find in most Swiss cities. On the downside, Geneva is possibly the most expensive city in an expensive country. There are a lot of hotels in Geneva, but very few of them are actually in anything like the budget range. Hundreds, many right around the central Cornavin train station offer a pretty standard rate of CHF 135 per night for a single. If you arrive late and are willing to spend that it makes sense to look at the automated hotel board in the train station to find the nearest vacancy.
A lot to see in Geneva such as :
The Geneva Water Fountain
St Pierre Cathedral

Chair Monument in Geneva, Switzerland
Geneva is the second most populous city in Switzerland (after Zurich) and is the most populous city of Romandy, the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Situated where the Rhone exits Lake Geneva, it is the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva. The municipality (ville de Genève) has a population (as of March 2013) of 194,245, and the canton (République et Canton de Genève, which includes the city) has 472,530 residents. In 2007, the urban area, or agglomération franco-valdo-genevoise (Great Geneva or Grand Genève in French) had 1,240,000[3] inhabitants in 189 municipalities in both Switzerland and France. The economic area Great Geneva-Bern area has 2.9 million inhabitants.
GENEVA - Switzerland Travel Guide | Around The World
Geneva (French: Genève, German: Genf) is Switzerland's second-most populous city and is one of the world's major centers of international diplomacy, having served as the site of the initial headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Although the United Nations is now headquartered in New York, the organization still retains a large presence in Geneva at the Palais des Nations and many of its sister/child organizations, such as the World Health Organization and ILO. Geneva itself has only 188,000 citizens but 780,000 people live in the metropolitan region (Jan 2009).
Geneva is officially a French-speaking city, and the vast majority of the population speak French. All advertisements, information, and signs are in French. With the large international presence, English takes a close second. Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, and Arabic speakers abound, and of course you will also occasionally hear German and Italian.
Due as much to its location as its international status, Geneva serves as a transportation hub for most of French speaking Switzerland and for access to the Swiss Alps from points west.
Geneva airport is served by almost all European carriers as well as a few daily trans-Atlantic flights. These include flights from Montréal's Trudeau International (YUL) on Air Canada (AC), Washington's Dulles (IAD) and Newark International (EWR) on United (UA), and New York's Kennedy (JFK) on Swiss (LX). Otherwise, when flying from North and South America you will have to change planes. Most passengers travelling in from the Asia-Pacific region and Africa will need to change planes as well. Air China has started direct services between the Chinese capital of Beijing and Geneva from May 2013.
Geneva, like most cities in Switzerland, is a marvel of public transportation efficiency. Transports Publics Genevois provides frequent bus, tram, 'mouette' (boat), and suburban train service to within a block or two of most locations in the city and canton.
The old-town can be easily visited on foot starting anywhere around the tour boat dock on Lake Geneva, or if you come from the Cornavin station, walk down to the Bel-Air island and continue straight on uphill to the old town.
It's worth taking at least a day to explore the green places of Geneva, of which there are quite a few, not the least because some of the more interesting parts of town are between those green places. There are a number of suggested promenades for which there are maps available at the tourist office on the Ile de la Machine.
Geneva has a huge number of restaurants for a city its size, and the international community means there's more variety than you'll find in most Swiss cities. On the downside, Geneva is possibly the most expensive city in an expensive country. Additionally, it can be quite difficult to find food on Sunday night, so it might be worth planning ahead or just visiting the more touristy region near the train station. If you have the possibility to cook your own food, self catering is a good idea to save money. If you are staying for a longer period, it's a good idea to make shopping trips to supermarkets in France where many foods cost less than half of what they do in Geneva.
