Estonian president meets Bush

2. Cutaway of press
3. SOUNDBITE: (English) George W. Bush, US President :
Today, once again, we saw the brutality that extremists can inflict upon societies when a suicider (sic) killed innocent people who were working toward reconciliation. All the more reason, Mr. President, for us to remain firm and strong as we stand for this young democracy - these young democracies. The people of Estonia paid a high price. You lost - I know you lost two soldiers in Afghanistan recently, and our thoughts and prayers go to the families and the people of Estonia. We thank you for your sacrifice and just want you to know that we're committed to working hard to make sure that we succeed - and we succeed for the sake of peace for generations to come.
4. Cutaway of Ilves listening to Bush
5. SOUNDBITE: (English) George W. Bush, US President :
Estonia recently went through a wave of cyber attacks. And this President, one, understands the issue well; two, has got some ideas, including a NATO centre of excellence in Estonia to deal with this issue. And I really want to thank you for your leadership, and thank you for your clear understanding of the dangers that that imposes not only on your country, but mine and others, as well.
6. Cutaway of Vice President Dick Cheney and other advisers in Oval Office
7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Estonian President :
I'm grateful for President Bush's position which I did push him hard on, on the visa issue. It is something of concern in Estonia, but I think all the other new members of NATO, the ones who are - who have been very good allies in Iraq and in Afghanistan, and our people don't always understand why it is that those countries that have been the strongest supporters of the United States find it often the most difficult to come for a vacation.
8. Wide side shot of Bush and Ilves shaking hands as photo op comes to a close
STORYLINE:
President George W. Bush, acknowledging he could stand to learn a lot about cyber-security, expressed concern on Monday over the high-tech hacking that crippled computer systems in Estonia.
Bush praised Estonia's president, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, for sharing information on how to deal with such security breaches.
Estonia, a former Soviet republic, claims it has suffered cyber attacks against its government and corporate Web sites at the hands of Russian hackers, as retribution over a bitter dispute with Moscow over the removal of a Red Army statue in downtown Tallinn, the capital of the Baltic nation.
The Russian government has denied involvement.
Bush stayed away from the touchy matter, instead focusing on the lesson of vulnerability for the United States.
Thank you for your clear understanding of the dangers that imposes not only on your country, but mine and others as well, Bush told Ilves after their meeting at the White House.
Bush praised Estonia for contributing troops to the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He briefly noted the latest suicide bombing in Baghdad on Monday, which killed at least 12 people, including a US-allied tribal sheik.
Bush told Ilves the attack was all the more reason...to remain firm and strong as we stand for this young democracy.
Ilves thanked the United States for standing by his country's quest for independence even in the darkest of times.
Yet again he urged Bush to include Estonia and other countries in a visa waiver programme, which allows citizens of some countries to enter the US with only passports.
Bush said the programme was inconsistent, and he was lobbying Congress to change that.

Estonia Selects First Female President - But Who Is She?
What You Need To Know:
✅ Estonia’s first female president Kersti Kaljulaid took the oath of office during a ceremony in parliament on October 10;
✅ She replaces US-educated head of state Toomas Hendrik Ilves, most well known for helping to promote Estonian technology and innovation on the international stage;
✅ The 46-year-old newly appointed leader is an EU Court of Auditors member, former political advisor to the prime minister and businesswoman;
✅ The presidential role in Estonia is largely symbolic. Kaljulaid does though hold the power to send bills back to parliament if they violate the Constitution.
Kersti Kaljulaid is settling into her new presidential dwellings in Estonia's picturesque capital Tallinn. The 46-year-old relatively unknown political figure has been propelled to the seat of power after a parliamentary vote on October 3. She replaces Toomas Hendrik Ilves, a head of state renowned for his outspoken criticism of Russia and foreign policy efforts to place the small Baltic state firmly on the European map.
On October 10, Kaljulaid took the oath of office. In her speech in parliament, the new president recalled memories of Estonia's Independence 25 years ago, before touching upon issues linked to education, healthcare and security issues.
Kaljulaid takes on the largely symbolic role for at least the next five years; but what can Estonians expect? According to Tallinn University Lecturer Katja Koort, the new president is likely to continue along a similar foreign policy as her predecessor.
She also mentioned that she will be following the example President Ilves has set in the sphere of international affairs, Ms. Koort told Hromadske.
It's clear she'll be keeping the same strong ties with our allies, with the EU and NATO and Estonian strategy towards Russia will definitely be coordinated with our allies
Ms. Koort also delved deeper into the past career of the new president, a European Court of Auditors member and a former policy advisor to Estonia's prime minister.
'She's not a member of any political party which could be one of the strongest arguments why she was elected to be president. But she used to be a member of a right-wing party called Pro Patria and Res Publica - but after starting work in the new structures, she ended her membership; so ideologically, she probably supports right-wing ideas.
Tallinn Univeristy Lecturer Katja Koort spoke with Hromadske International journalist Josh Kovensky via Skype on October 9.

President Moon Jae-in has a series of bilateral summits lined up with visiting global leaders.
First of many more to come was a meeting with his Estonian counterpart.
Hwang Hojun zooms in on the liberal leader's olympic diplomacy.
President Moon Jae-in held a summit meeting with his Estonian counterpart, President Kersti Kaljulaid on Tuesday. The two leaders agreed to improve bilateral cooperation in various areas, including cyber defense and fostering of startup businesses.
President Kaljulaid is the first head of state arriving in South Korea for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
In fact, she is the first Estonian leader ever to visit South Korea since the two countries established diplomatic ties 27 years ago.
President Moon said President Kaljulaid's first ever visit to Korea will be a great milestone in their bilateral relationship.
This year Estonia commemorates 100 years of independence, while South Korea celebrates its hosting of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. I think it's significant for the Estonian president to visit our country during a time that is joyous to both countries.
President Moon noted Estonia is a global leader in the IT industry, for introducing the world's first electronic residency identification card system and electronic voting system.
He said he hopes South Korea and Estonia, as powerhouses in the IT sector, will boost bilateral cooperation in various areas including e-government, cyber defense, and fostering startup businesses.
The Korean leader also thanked his Estonian counterpart for supporting Seoul's policy on North Korea.
President Moon asked for Estonia's continued support on the momentum of improvement of inter-Korean relations created by Pyeongchang.
President Kaljulaid in return expressed her gratitude for President Moon's warm welcome and said she also hopes the two countries will be able to increase exchanges in both government and private levels.
The Estonian president is set to return home on Monday, after attending the opening ceremony of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Friday.
