DINGLE’S FAMINE GRAVEYARD
By Sean Mac an tSithigh
A group of local men have spent weeks cleaning up Dingle's forgotten and overgrown Famine Graveyard. It's believed over 2,000 people were buried in mass graves here during the Great Famine of the 1840s. They died in the nearby Poorhouse (which eventually became Dingle Hospital). Unknown sailors and unbabtised infants were also buried here.
The Great Famine (Irish: an Gorta Mór) or the Great Hunger was a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1852. It is sometimes referred to, mostly outside Ireland, as the Irish Potato Famine, because about two-fifths of the population was solely reliant on this cheap crop for a number of historical reasons. During the famine, approximately 1 million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland, causing the island's population to fall by between 20% and 25%.
The proximate cause of famine was Phytophthora infestans, a potato disease commonly known as potato blight, which ravaged potato crops throughout Europe during the 1840s. However, the impact in Ireland was disproportionate, as one third of the population was dependent on the potato for a range of ethnic, religious, political, social, and economic reasons, such as land acquisition, absentee landlords, and the Corn Laws, which all contributed to the disaster to varying degrees and remain the subject of intense historical debate.
The famine was a watershed in the history of Ireland. Its effects permanently changed the island's demographic, political, and cultural landscape. For both the native Irish and those in the resulting diaspora, the famine entered folk memory[fn 1] and became a rallying point for various Irish Home Rule and United Ireland movements, as the whole island was then part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
The massive famine soured the already strained relations between many of the Irish people and the British Crown, heightening Irish republicanism, which eventually led to Irish independence in the next century. Modern historians regard it as a dividing line in the Irish historical narrative, referring to the preceding period of Irish history as pre-Famine.

#WeDealInReal: Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne, Ireland
Discover more clubs who embody the #WeDealInReal spirit:
Welcome to rugby on the edge. Europe’s most Westerly rugby club, Chorca Dhuibhne is a tiny club based seven miles outside the remote town of Dingle, where most of the locals call Gaelic their native tongue. The club lack the funding to level their uneven pitch, so visiting sides must embrace the challenge of playing uphill for half a match. They often struggle to field a fully-fit team due to the size of the community, but never let that stop them, as players of all ages get stuck in. With the Kerry Cup in their trophy cabinet, they’re proof that glory comes from passion, not postcode.

The project aimed to highlight the UN's Sustainable Development Goals by engaging students in a project through the medium of poetry and etching. Over the course of two months, twenty-seven students worked with poet Bríd Ní Mhoráin and Printmaker Niall Naessens to create poems and etchings. This short film documents the process.

Recording Ogham Stones in 3D
An information session about recording Ogham Stones in 3D was organized by Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne late last year in Ballyferriter. The event was held to gauge if a proposal to establish a community project that would record the ogham stones of West Kerry in 3D was viable. In this report Isabel Bennettt, curator of the West Kerry Museum and Nora White from the Institute of Advanced Studies explain the project, it's objectives and the proposed input from the community.
