2018's Steam Weekend on the Oil Creek & Titusville
For the first time since 2012, the Oil Creek & Titusville, based in western Pennsylvania, ran steam-powered trips along their 13.5-mile line from Titusville to Rynd Farm. In town to power the trips between June 22 - 24, 2018 were 0-4-0 Viscose Company #6, and 0-4-0 Jeddo Coal #85 - both travelling tank locomotives. They were slated to doublehead 3.5 hour round trips throughout the weekend - however, during the Friday night trip, problems developed with #85. After the Saturday morning trip started, the train had to return to Titusville, where #85 was taken off and placed out of service for the rest of the weekend. #6, therefore, had to go at it with diesel assistance for the remainder of the weekend. Nonetheless, the trips were otherwise extremely popular and there were plenty of people on board each run. Enjoy this look at 2018's Steam Weekend on the Oil Creek & Titusville!
Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad Peter Cottontail Express 2018
2018 Peter Cottontail Express at the Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad In Titusville Pennsylvania. The train runs through Drake Well Park, as well as Oil Creek State Park in what is known as the Valley That Changed the World due to Col. Edwin Drake revolutionizing the way oil was drilled for with his well in 1859. The Train was pulled by OC&T #75, a 1947 built Alco S-2. The OC&T is also the only railway in the United States with an operating mail car.

Titusville, Pennsylvania
In this video you will be given a visual tour around historic Titusville, Pennsylvania. Titusville is the birth place of the modern day oil industry, but that is not all Titusville is known for. Titusville offers numerous activities for the outdoor enthusiast, beautiful public parks, Drake Well Park and Museum, and the Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad. You can also find some of the largest, most beautiful homes located in Pennsylvania. This area features a very low cost of living, low crime rate, and exceptional schools. Titusville is both a great place to call home and a great place to visit.

Toyota's Hydrogen Electric Mirai is Fueled by Oil Creek in Titusville, Pennsylvania
For a solar/hydrogen economy-
Harry Braun for President 2020
The innovative new Toyota Mirai and its revolutionary Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology have been showcased in a new series from Toyota called “Powered by Everything”. Through this series, the brand is demonstrating how this model can get its power from anything in nature that creates Hydrogen, making it a completely natural zero-emissions vehicle.
For this part of the series, the brand traveled to the small town of Titusville, Pennsylvania, home of the very first production oil well. Today, that oil well is now a creek, appropriately named Oil Creek, but the town has not forgotten its important place in history. It was only fitting that Toyota would return to the town where automotive fuel got its start and use water from their creek to demonstrate the power of H20 in the Hydrogen Fuel Cell process.
“This small Pennsylvania town saw the boom and bust of the oil industry, making it the perfect place to tell the story of hydrogen as a future fuel and the Toyota Mirai,” Martin said. “The residents’ genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for the next step in our country’s transportation story can inspire us all to think differently about energy and technology.”

Pt I: America's First Oil Boom in Northwest Pennsylvania (Exploring the Gerard Trail)
This is my first of a series of hikes I did at Oil Creek State Park, Pennsylvania (USA) in late Fall of 2017 and early Winter of 2018. I could never have imagined the amount of history preserved from the early oil industry in this State Park. The original equipment can be found strewn around the forest everywhere. There are even entire buildings intact, with large machinery inside. This is where the Oil Industry began with Drake's Well in 1859. Prior to the discovery of oil as an energy source, oil was an unwanted contaminant in salt wells and bubbling salt springs. The birth of the modern oil industry precipitated the end of the previous Whaling Industry, and gave birth to the industrial era. Whale's oil and blubber used to be used to power lamps. This video covers a section on the Southern portion of the 36-mile Gerard Hiking Trail beginning at Rynd Farm. This state park is about 12- 12.5 miles long, and the hiking trail covers the entire state park, with several bridges that cross Oil Creek. While I previously (Spring 2017) hiked a portion of this trail, I did not see nearly as much historical evidence of the first oil boom. The lack of foliage in the winter really opened my eyes to the hidden treasures of this park. I wanted to capture the story of the the oil industry before Texas big oil. Besides Drake's Well, there are numerous other wells, as the oil industry progressed. Pennsylvania continues to produce oil today (2018) with the oldest continuously producing oil well (McClintock 1), in Oil Creek State Park not far from Drake's Well. McClintock 1 has produced oil since 1861! Pennsylvania still produces enough oil to keep several refineries running. Texas gusher oilfields were developed around 1900 and production in that state soon eclipsed production in PA. Texas remains the top oil producing state at present. Old trusted Brands like Pennzoil, Wolf's Head, and Quaker State all had their origins in the oil fields of Northwest, PA where oil was found close to the ground. Some of the oil well structures in the park are replicas, while others are from the 1800's. The old wells were made of wood, and drilled less than 100' deep. I am not sure what the barrels are used for that are everywhere in forest. I suspect they once contained oil. Production was very low by today's standards. If you search, you can find rocks like the Venango Third Oil Sandstone in Northwest, PA that contain oil, and smell of petroleum. The oil in Pennsylvania was unique for it's high paraffin and is known as Pennsylvania Sweet Crude. Throughout the hike you will see the remains of old pipes that once held oil. They are rusted out in various states of decay, and full of holes. I apologize to the park staff if I was breaking the rules by hiking after dark. These sort of rules frustrate me, and it is unfortunate that we need to have such rules. In the future I try to leave the park shortly after dark (sometimes as late as 6pm). I know that there are rustic camping lean to shelters along the trail in various places, so people do spend time in the park at night. Where I was parked was not in the main part of the park, and easily accessible from PA State Route 8, so perhaps no one was concerned. Either way, I think there is something to be gained by being outdoors at sunrise and sunset that is centering, and good for the soul. I often enjoy the hikes most where I finish in the dark, especially in winter when the days are so short. It feels good to not let the darkness stop you. The experience of hiking at night is very different from hiking in the day, and it has it's rewards. One of the animals made a strange sound at one point (although I may have missed recording it). It scared me a little.
Information in this video and subsequent videos is as accurate as I understood it at the time of publication, and will be annotated and corrected as time permits, as I find out more accurate or interesting information.
In addition to the remains of the old oil industry, Oil Creek State Park is known for it's natural beauty, which includes numerous waterfalls. I never expected to see so many waterfalls, as I walked along the Gerard Trail. The trail is notable for having numerous hills as it winds through several drainages and sub-drainages or Hollows. Oil Creek is popular with kayaking, Canoeing and rafting enthusiasts. There is cross country ski area in the Northern Part of the park. I complete the hike back from the central portion of the park to my car at Rynd Farm after dark (5PM-7PM). On the way back the snow begins to fall, and it makes me happy. Later in the evening I drive North, past the Northern end of the park to Titusville, PA to get my mom a half gallon of half and half at Giant Eagle. On the way home, I see even more snow (Lake Effect) as I drive through Meadville, PA, and eventually reach Interstate 79. The hike back is shown toward the end of the film. I will make a separate movie with the drive.
Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad Peter Cottontail Express 2019
I was invited by the OC&T to ride the peter Cottontail Express this year and take some photos. It was a nice day weather wise, and a good ride as always. Locomotive power this trip was provided by the OC&T Montreal Locomotive Works M420, built in 1976 I believe.

Oil Creek & Titusville Steam Weekend
For the first time since 1953 steam locomotives traveled through the valley that changed the world onn July 14th & 15th 2012 in Titusville, PA. Here is a short video I shot while working on the train. I wish I could have gotten some ground shots but just didn't have the opportunity. This was a great weekend enjoyed by the thousands who came out to be apart of history!
Train Through the OIl Region
Last autumn, I took the Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad through Pennsylvania's historic oil region. Here's a brief video of that ride. I recommend that, if you find yourself near Titusville in Crawford County, you take a ride. They operate the only remaining railroad post office left in the United States.

In this video we describe a video shoot we did many years ago in Titusville, PA at the Drake Oil Well Museum. The Drake Oil Well has a steep history in the modern oil industry. See behind the scenes photos of the original video shoot and see the final product that was shown at the Drake Oil Well Museum for over a decade.
UPDATE: Had to edit a song off the end of the old video. Evidently that song is no longer in the public domain, as it was when the video was originally produced. Not sure how a company can do that but ... this video is edited and back up.
This is the 1st episode of our Vintage series. We hope you like it. In this episode we take you to 1997-1998 Titusville, PA to see the Drake Oil Well and the educational video we helped to make with the PA state run Commonwealth Media Group (CMS).
