Usuki's samurai district is located at its city center, and parts of it keep the flavor of an old castle town with their stone paved alleys lined by premodern looking houses.
The main attraction is the Nioza Historical Road, a 200 meter photogenic narrow alleyway which runs along temples and residences built in Edo Period style architecture, making a feeling of the past. Parallel to it runs the Haccho Oji Shopping Street, a merchant street with a neighborhood atmosphere, lined by shops selling local specialties, groceries and etc. Walking westwards for about five minutes brings you to Ryugenji, with nice three-storied pagoda.
The Ruins of Usuki Castle
It is located on the eastern side of the district. Currently a neighborhood park is located on the former castle grounds. Unfortunately, most of the castle buildings including the main keep have been destroyed over the years, and today the only prominent structures remaining are a turret and a gate standing along the park's entrance.

Today visitors can visit the Inaba Residence, local feudal lord during the Edo Period where the family used to live whenever they returned to visit their home town after they had moved to Tokyo in the Meiji Period. The beautiful wooden residence is set in a tranquil ambience, with simple and elegant interior design, several tatami mat rooms, wide corridors and a nice garden. Another samurai residence open to public is the Marumo Residence, placed at the southern end of the town center.

The attractions of the samurai district are all located within walking distance of Usuki and Kami-Usuki Stations. It takes around 10-15 minutes to walk to the Nioza Historical Road from either station.
[Cinematic] Usuki Castle Ruins - Oita - 臼杵城跡
What used to be a small island is Usuki city and its most beautiful castle. The Usuki Castle ruin and its keep are today a nice and quiet park overlooking the city. The only part of the gates, its turrets, and a small temple remain of the main structure.

Taketa City in Oita Prefecture
Have you ever heard of Taketa City in Oita Prefecture? If you are looking for something different from artificial tourist attractions, Taketa is a place for you to go. It takes about 150min by car from Hakata Station to get there. Taketa is abundant in amazing landscapes. For example, the Kuju Highland is breathtakingly beautiful especially when you go off the main roads. Furthermore, the ruins of Oka Castle are famous all over Japan. The castle`s main structures were torn down due to the Meiji restoration. Its grand stone walls which still stand there were built with astonishing technique, making the castle ruins outstanding up to today. From the 325m high plateau near the castle, you can get a spectacular view. Once a year, Chikuraku (Taketa Bamboo Lantern Festival) is held. More than 20,000 lanterns create a romantic and kind of mysterious atmosphere. A unique festival you shouldn`t miss. Taketa also has Onsen to offer. Nagayu Hot Spring are highly carbonated and popular.

Oita, on the island of Kyushu, Japan, travel, order hotels, sights and landmarks
Oita (大分市 Oita-shi) is the capital city of Oita prefecture on the island of Kyushu.
Understand[edit]
This article is about Oita City, the capital of Oita Prefecture. Oita City Hall, the management center for Oita City, can be found next to the old castle ruins. The old castle ruins now consist of the old moat which surrounds a modern building called Oita Cultural Hall (Bunkakaikan). With Oita Cultural Hall and the Grand Theater and Otonoizumi Hall in the Iichiko Culture Center, Oita City is also the center of activity for events such as musical concerts and other stage events. The area near Oita Station has many shops, restaurants, and bars.
Get around[edit]
The Oita Station area hotels, shops, and restaurants can be accessed easily on foot.
You can rent a bicycle for 200yen a day at Oita Station and ride it to scenic spots like the West Oita waterfront (also accessible by train) and Oita River.
Buses leave from Oita Station and Tokiwa Department Store to other points in Oita City.
See[edit][add listing]
Near the river are the ruins of an ancient castle. There are some cherry trees in the park surrounding the castle.
About half-way between Oita and Beppu is Takasakiyama, where a colony of Japanese macaques can be visted in a pleasant surrounding. At the base of the mountain is the visitors' center and Oita's Marine Palace, an aquarium with a dolphin show and trained fish.
Do[edit][add listing]
Worth seeing is the Oita Prefectural Library, designed by architect Arata Isozaki, an early Metabolist masterpiece, finished around 1965. A remarkable brutalist concrete building, it was converted into an Isozaki museum in 1998.

Usuki Stone Buddhas, Oita - 臼杵石仏●大分 - Japan As It Truly Is
The Usuki Stone Buddhas are a mysterious collection of carved stone Buddhas made in the 12th century. Nobody knows why.
The centuries have taken their toll on some of the figures, and some protective measures have been made to preserve them for the future. But you can still see some astonishing artwork and detail in some of them, and if you plan to be in the area, are certainly worth a look.
Is anything you do going to be admired 9 centuries from now?
The Usuki Stone Buddhas (臼杵磨崖仏, or 臼杵石仏) are a rare gem off the beaten path in rural Oita, so go discover them before the tourist crowds do.

AMAZING BEPPU HELLS Japanese Hot Springs Tour
Going to hell in Beppu! Tour of the Hells of Beppu: amazing Japanese hot springs with boiling water, a red lake, 100°C geyser, mud bubbles and more.
SUBSCRIBE for more Japan vlogs and ideas for things to do in Kyushu.
We went on a day trip from Fukuoka to Beppu on the Sonic Limited Express train (about 2 hours). From Beppu Station you can take the bus to the first 5 hells in the Kannawa district, then another bus to the final 2 hells. The hells we visited are: Umi Jigoku, Oniishibozu Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, Oniyama Jigoku, Shiraike Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku and Tatsumaki Jigoku. They're all natural hot springs, the same type as found in Japanese onsen. They really are so strange and unusual, and this was the highlight of my time in Kyushu.
