A day at the Okaukuejo waterhole (Etosha, Namibia)
The waterhole of Okaukuejo camp (Etosha, Namibia) is one of the beste places in Africa to spot a lot of wildlife. The natural waterhole attracts herds of springbok, gnu's, kudu's, oryx and zebra's. Giraf and jackels are also regular visitors. Large herds of elephants also frequent the waterhole.
At night rino's will come for sure, but we also saw lions and a black hyena drinking after midnight.

Animals come to this waterhole 24 hours a day, but it is very spectacular to sit and watch them at the rim of the hole in the evening.

Etosha National Park is unique in Africa. The park’s main characteristic is a salt pan so large it can be seen from space. Yet there is abundant wildlife that congregates around the waterholes, giving you almost guaranteed game sightings. At the same time Etosha National Park is one of the most accessible game reserves in Namibia and Southern Africa. Animals like cheetah, lions, elephants, oryx, and many others can be seen in Etosha National Park.
The park is malaria free, accessible in a regular sedan car and the rest camps provide a range of accommodation as well as restaurants, viewing decks, shops and petrol stations.
The abundance of game in Etosha National Park is somewhat unexpected, showcasing some of the most common and rarest wildlife species. The areas with thicker vegetation are home to elephant (some of the largest in Africa due to the vitamins and nutrients found in the ground), the endangered black rhino and even leopard. Lions are camouflaged in the pale- golden colour of the grasslands, while giraffes rise- high above most of the dry vegetation.
Birders will love the rainy season in Etosha. After good rains the salt pan fills with water attracting a cloud of flamingos. More than 340 bird species have been counted in Etosha National Park. Among the migratory species, the European bee-eater is possibly the most popular sighting. The game reserve is also home to the world’s largest bird, the ostrich, and the heaviest flying bird, the kori bustard.

Wir stellen dir das Okaukuejo Camp im Etosha Nationalpark vor! Hinter unserer Campsite laufen gerade viele Elefanten entlang und wir genießen nochmal die afrikanische Wildnis. Es ist unser letzter Abend in Namibias wilder Landschaft. Am darauffolgenden Tag haben wir unser Auto abgegeben und noch einen schönen Abend mit leckerem Essen und netten Menschen in Namibias Hauptstadt Windhoek verbracht.

Etosha Okaukuejo Waterhole at Night, Namibia, Africa
There is whole another world going on outside your room door when you stay at Etosha National Park. The wild animals come down to drink at night and are in fear just to take their first mouthful. Black rhino, giraffes and elephants all drinking from the one waterhole makes for spectacular viewing, just fascinating.

Etosha National Park First established in 1907 the Etosha salt pan desert dominates the park and briefly fills with water in the summer, attracting pelicans and flamingo. In the dry season winds blow over the hyper saline conditions of the pan and carries minerals to the soil downwind. Animals concentrate around waterholes in these challenging conditions and such congregations offer exceptional opportunities to observe animal behaviour.

Namibia 2016: Drama at the Chudob Waterhole, Eastern Etosha National Park
When we arrived at the Chudob Waterhole a Hyena had pulled the young kudu carcass well away from the water and was feeding on it with one White-Backed Vulture in attendance. Looking up three more were circling. As each landed so the stakes were raised and the hyena had to defend its booty. Vultures were now appearing out of nowhere, or so it seemed. Will explained that vultures, carried by thermals, attain heights of 7000m with birds at every level below (a bit like stacking at Heathrow Airport!) when the lowest ones spot a kill, they go in and those above, watching, come down. Thus within 20mins the hyena now had 25 vultures to contain…oh, and two jackals who were also hoping for some tit-bits. One Lappet–Faced Vulture (a big bird!) also joined the white-backs. Vultures were landing every few seconds. Tired of defending the carcass, the hyena, tore off a leg and ran for the bush some hundreds of metres away. The vultures piled in. What a melee! Dust, noise, birds everywhere! By now 40-50 were in attendance. The jackals were sneaking in and stole bits the vultures dropped, whilst the big Lappet-faced was literally on top of the writhing bodies pulling other birds off with its bill! The hyena returned and the vultures and jackals scattered in dust clouds to a safe distance. As they scattered I could not believe what little was left of the kudu, just bones and skin. The hyena was determined this time to keep his prize and when we left it was still chewing the bones, with the jackals still making raiding forays and 75(!) vultures either on the ground or circling above.
Namibia 2016: The Waterholes of Central Etosha
The morning saw us off early to explore the central part of Etosha National Park around Okaukuejo. One of the largest national parks in Africa, Etosha is dominated by two things: its enormous salt pan and lack of water. The net result of this is loss of vegetation and large concentrations of animals around water holes. The vast mineral pan at its centre measures approx. 110km x 60km (4700km²) – the only life it supports is algae. The regions bordering the pan however, support a huge variety of wildlife.
On arriving at our first water hole (Ombika) we were treated to a great ‘scrum’ of zebra all attempting to get a drink. At the second one (Nebrownii), we encountered vast numbers of Springbok similarly engaged. I had not seen this desert adapted antelope before and I have to confess I found them handsome creatures. I thought we had a real bonus when an Oryx turned up to drink. Again, these splendidly handsome beasts are adapted to desert conditions and it is usually rare to see more than one, fleetingly in the bush. Soon we noticed that across the plain columns of Oryx were appearing from all quarters – all converging on this water hole. How many animals? I lost count! Oryx were everywhere. By the time a lone jackal came to drink and the Pied Crows plus Black-faced Impala, Ostriches and Kudu we had at least six or seven species all drinking in front of us.
Later in the morning at the Gemsbokvlakte water hole we came across a pair of mating lions. Obviously, the exertion from 20 to 40 romps a day had taken their toll as both were relaxed and appeared to be having an ‘after our’s drink’ by the pool(!) - much to the despair of all the Springbok waiting nearby.
Other highlights of our morning game drive were to see Kori Bustards, a Northern Black Korhaan and the nests of the Sociable Weaver. This particular little bird builds a nest of gargantuan proportions and allows other birds (up to one thousand!) to share it. Their nests have been known to bring down an entire tree!

Okaukuejo in Etosha National Park (Namibia) is one of best places on earth for spotting wildlife. This is a scenery early in the evening when we saw oryxes and gazelles and a big elephant family and some white rhinos.
